Update 10-7-08

Hi,

I just got a notice from AOL.  It appears that after October 31, 2008, AOL will stop supporting its members' home pages, so there goes the class web site we've had for the last seven years  As I've mentioned before, I've been meaning to rework the site anyway, to eliminate some of the duplicate photos, so this is certainly incentive.  To begin with, I'll move the essential information to a free Google blog, and I'll start to include that new address in these updates.  Later, I'll try to add some of the class photos to the blog.  But all that involves a lot of mouse-clicking, and my joints can only take so much of that in any single week.

In other news about addresses, from Claire Brush Reinhardt:  Just wanted to remind you of a few things.  First, I just got word that our new Valley Stream South High School Alumni web site is finally able to be accessed at:  www.vsshs-alumni.org. ; A lot of the site is still under constructions, but there are some photos posted and other stuff you can see.  Hopefully, much more will be added very soon.
Also another reminder about Homecoming at South on October 18th.  It should be a really nice day with lots of mixing, mingling, and reconnecting.  It will all begin with an alumni breakfast at 11:00 in the library.  That room will remain open for socializing for the rest of the day.
Again, we really do need to know how many people to expect, so we can order enough food for the brunch.  So please, if you're planning to spend this cool, crisp autumn day renewing old friendships and making new ones, send your check for $5.00 to Emily Schreiber at:  2950 Bellmore Avenue, Bellmore, New York  11710.  And do it as soon as possible as we'll be finalizing the food order next week.  Hope to see you there.

Related, from Emily Kleinman Schreiber:  Hello.  A quick note to say that, yes, there was a meeting of South's Alumni Association on Thursday night, October 2nd at 7:15.  We always have a nice group, but it would be as nice if it were a larger group
By the way, many of you have sent in the $5.00 to show that you'll be attending South's Homecoming, and that's appreciated.  How about hearing the rest of you, especially those who live on Long Island?  We'll be honoring the Class of '58 -- South's first graduates -- and alumni from all other classes are encouraged to attend.  Former teachers, too.  It will be fun.  If you need any further information, please call me at:  516-781-2860.  Thanks.

A quasi-political, quasi-family note from Barnet Kellman:  The Great Schlep site aims to have Jewish grandchildren visit their grandparents in Florida, educate them about Barack Obama, and, therefore, swing the crucial Florida vote in his favor.  Don’t have grandparents in Florida?  Not Jewish?  No problem!  You can still become a schlepper and make change happen in 2008, simply by talking to your relatives about Obama.

Continued news of Los Angeles music, from Amy Lieberman:
        BiIly Valentine sings for you.
Friday, October 10th, with Off the Hook, good ol' r&b, at Cafe Cordiale, 14015 Ventura Boulevard, Sherman Oaks, California.  818.789.1985.  First set -- 10:00 PM
Thursday, October 16th and Wednesday, October 22nd, with the Stuart Elster Trio at Casa Del Mar Hotel, 1910 Ocean Way, Santa Monica, California.  310.581.5533.  6:30 PM -- 10:30 PM
And looking ahead, but not meaning to rush it, New Years' Eve at Shutters Hotel.

A nostalgic infomercial from Barbara Blitfield Pech:  I know I had a conversation with someone about the merits of Oreos versus Hydrox cookies, and we bemoaned the fact that Hydrox cookies were no longer able to be found.  Well, good news -- I found them at Wynn-Dixie, and they're as good as ever!  As you can see, they don't get in the way of one-handed typing, either.  So if you don't live in a state with the Wynn-Dixie chain, and you need a cookie fix, they can be mailed for the asking.

Some mangled wordplay, the first gleaned from a longer forward sent by Zelda White Nichols:
The teacher asked that these words be used in a sentence:  mushroom, shoulder, chicken, and chicken wing.  And the children's replied:
"When my whole family gets in the car, there's not mushroom."
"My sister didn't know how to read so I shoulder."
"I was going shopping with my mom but chicken go alone."
"My grandma plays the lottery so chicken wing."

Next, from a postcard mailed by one of my grad schools, announcing a new performing arts program:  "We invite you to join us as we elevate awareness, expand the impact, and nurture the roles of the shared creative experience through discovery, learning, and engagement!"

Finally, from everyone's new favorite whipping post:  "I know that John McCain will do that and I, as his vice president, families we are blessed with that vote of the American people and are elected to serve and are sworn in on January 20, that will be our top priority is to defend the American people."
