Update 2-3-09
Hi,
A slew of links, two reminders, and the highlights of the December Alumni Association meeting. But first, two notes from the president of North's Alumni Association:
With best regards from Miriam Pisk Miller '61: Bonnie Richter, Valley Stream North '61, sent these YouTube links to the Aquatones, started at Valley Stream Central, but with female lead vocalist Lynne Nixon from Valley Stream North '59.
Dave Goddard Valley Stream Central '57 presents a nice history of the group on YouTube:

Lynne Nixon sings "You" on this one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WsLrDmqquZs
[Rich -- from me to Miriam Miller: Thanks. I'll pass the information on to my class.]
From Miriam back: You are most welcome. I'm glad that we're trying to unite all the Valley Stream high schools.
A link and its explanation sent by Booker Gibson: A 2009 Inauguration photo. This is absolutely the best in high definition. It's really amazing. Zoom in -- double-click on an area -- and watch it focus. Then zoom in some more and wait for it to focus again. What a surveillance tool this is.
This picture was taken with a robotic camera and weighs in at 1,474 megapixels -- 295 times the standard 5 megapixel camera. It was a Canon that pulled together over 200 individual shots. Each zoom in takes a second to focus, and then you can see some amazing reactions. Bonus points if you find Yo-Yo Ma, taking a picture with his iPhone.

Finally, highlights of the minutes from the December 4th meeting, as usual, respectfully submitted by

Treasurer’s Report:
Dennis Shapiro presented the Treasurer’s report. We have 3 new members, one a lifetime member.
There was a $50 donation made by Shirley Hess Deutsch ’66 in memory of Warren Hess ’77.
The Treasurer’s books were audited by the Trustees and they were in order.
Scholarship Committee:
Chairman Eileen Howell presented the updated scholarship rubric. We decided to add the Association
logo to the application.
The deadline for the submission of applications by students is March 31, 2009.
After a lengthy discussion, Eileen Howell made a motion that we award two $500 scholarships in 2009
and that this decision be reviewed by the membership annually.
Before a vote, and after further discussion, it was recommended that $1000 be put toward scholarship
use, one of which is for $500. The rest of the money will be allocated for additional scholarship use
at the discretion of the scholarship committee. This amended motion was passed unanimously.
An announcement of our scholarship award will be put in the PTA Newsletter and in the Guidance
Office.
It was also decided that we would send an e-mail to members asking for contributions for our
scholarships for 2010.
Emily Kleinman Schreiber made a motion that we add a teacher’s name to each year’s scholarship.
She suggested that this year’s scholarship be given “in honor of science teacher Irving Saffrin. The
motion was passed.
Acts of Kindness:
After considering several suggestions for this year -- Green Acres Senior Center visit, Valley Stream
Historical Society -- it was decided that Eileen Howell would call the Holy Name of Mary food
bank, which donates canned goods to local families.
The motion to allocate $200 for this purpose was made by Eileen, and it was passed.
Karen Grimm, Irene Sundal and Eileen Howell will go to BJ’S to make the necessary purchases.
