Update 5-19-09
Hi,
Some notes, and there's some been some mail about Facebook. But that will have to wait till at least next week.
First, from Amy Miller, for Steve Cahn. No Randee Gordon in the class of '63, but there was a Beverly Gordon. And no girls had "ee" after their names in our years.
On the contrary, from Betsy Fels Pottruck to Steve Cahn: The Gordons were my cross-the-street neighbors, and Randee was my best friend until she moved. I would love to know how to contact her because it would be fun to reconnect.
Also, I was a fan of Molly and Leo's -- egg salad on rye toast was the best. I also liked Shor's, and when my dad used to travel out of town, my mother would take us to the Hamburger Express for dinner. Loved the train delivery. What great memories.
From Barney Zinger: Come on, Sandy Tarter, send me that e-mail.
Also, about Shor's in Hewlett: As I think I've mentioned before, Frank and Ed Bonlarron and I worked there after school and on weekends. I pushed the four-wheel cart around, cleaning tables. Ed did whatever, and Frank was behind the counter, checking out the girls.
From Eric Hilton, first to Marry Sipp Green: I remember having Joe Jochnowitz for art, and I think -- and you might ask him this -- my girlfriend Lois Lefkowitz had him for art at Laurelton High School.
Then to Steve Cahn: You are so right on the money about the Hamburger Express though I thought it was called the Hamburger Local. It was a cool experience when my beautiful Aunt Phyllis took me there as a little boy, I think as a reward for dragging me into Loehmann’s across the street.
And I know I've told this story here before, but maybe Steve hasn't heard it. I sat in the Loehmann’s dressing room for what seemed like 12 hours, watching in horror as hundreds of huge women all fought for the one or two designer dresses -- all in size 2 -- that were hidden on the discount racks. It was like watching a feeding frenzy at the New York Aquarium as great white sharks fought over one baby seal. I had been scarred for life -- I was 8 years old and, except for in National Geographic magazine, I never wanted to see another naked woman again. Until I got to South High, where hot girls helped me begin my road to naked women recovery. And I blame it all on Hamburger Express, so thanks for the bad memories again, Steve.
More sports confirmation, from Peter Shapiro: Walter Rooney was indeed the coach and teacher at South.
And thanks from his sister Joanne Shapiro Polner to Ellen Epstein Silver: Hi, Ellen. Thank you for enabling Alan Epstein '59 and me to connect. I spoke with him and his wife today, on the phone from New Jersey to Texas. We had a very pleasant conversation, and we expect to meet in person next October on Long Island. Your networking is most appreciated.
From another Peter, Mr. Rosen: I may have missed it, but do we need to be talking about a reunion next year for our 45th? Any other support for this?
[Rich -- As I wrote Peter: I'm not sure if anyone in our class wants to get together in a big group again, at least not on an off-year -- maybe for our 50th. For our 45th, we might pick a destination and try one of those small group, pay-your-own-way, reunions though. Let's mention it in the next newsletter and see if anyone reacts. Any particular destination, besides Atlanta, which, I know, would mean less traveling for you? And thanks for the reminder.]
Speaking of reactions: There was no response to the anonymous suggestion of supporting a third scholarship, so my instincts about the class' feeling presently seem right. But here's some news from Liz King Giordano, our representative at South, about this year's scholarship winners.]
From Liz King Giordano: The 2009 recipients for Senior High Awards Night are as follows:
For the Vince Tampio Theater Scholarship -- Emily Sherman.
For the Booker Gibson Music Scholarship -- Kimberly Faust.
Also, Booker contacted me to say that he'll be out of town for a big family reunion on June 10th, so Linda Tobin Kettering will be presenting both awards by herself.
Hope all is well with everyone. Best regards.
And here's some neat follow-up from Linda Tobin Kettering: I know Emily Sherman. Her mom is Mindy Dickler, South class of '69 and Forest Road class of '64 -- she graduated a year early from South. She also had an older brother who some of you probably knew, Paul Dickler, class of '66.
Mindy's daughter Emily is an amazing opera singer, a good actress, and an accomplished fine artist. All in all, a good choice for either award. I don't know Kimberly, but I'll see what I can find out about her to tell the collected classes.
Again, I look forward to presenting the awards.
[Rich -- The checks should already be to Liz King Giordano. I sent them on Thursday, May 14th.]
From Arlene Ainbinder Lynn: Hi. I just wanted to mention that four ladies from the class of '66 -- Shirley Hess Deutsch, Janice Feldman Holden, Eileen Gunderson Gelet, and I -- met for a bagel breakfast at Bagel City in Boca Raton on Saturday morning, May 9th. I was in Florida for Mother's Day weekend, visiting my mom. She's 96-years-young and living in Deerfield Beach.
Finally, Claire Brush Reinhardt sent a note mentioning that there's a flyer about the July 1st "Evening with Booker Gibson" on the Alumni Association web site. And Roberta Brill Birnel sent a note with the March Alumni Association minutes attached. They'll turn up here eventually, but they're also available on the Alumni Association web site -- www.vsshs-alumni.org.
