Update 5-5-09
Hi,
Feliz Cinco de Mayo. And before anyone thinks I'm bilingual and before I forget: Happy Mother's Day. Then, in the order received:
From Steve Cahn: Glad you put some of my class blog in your letter. The Molly's blog was fun, but for some reason, I couldn't sustain the interest of the group. That's what's so unbelievably special about your class' newsletter. It's true that you have a small corps of contributors, but you probably have a ton more readers. I look forward to seeing it in my e-mail, and I stop what I'm doing to read it whenever if comes out. Also, anyone know where Gene Barkin is? I'm thinking he was '66.
From Andy Dolich: My mother used to tell me, "Clark Gable had big ears." My reply, "Frankly, Mom, I don't give a damn" Gwen Camhi thinks I'm Dumbo's cousin.
From Zelda White Nichols, for Joanne Shapiro Polner: If you ever visit North Carolina, there's a store called The Candy Factory in Lexington that's an antique store as well as a candy store. It has many of the old hand toys we played with as kids as well as the candies we used to eat, including Mary Janes, coconut covered marshmallows, NIBS (wax mini-bottles filled with sugar water), Sugar Daddies, nonpareils and many others.
From Barbara Blitfield Pech, also for Joanne: I wish I could assure you that your hopes about candy ingredients are on target, but back in the day, there were few, if any, restrictions on food additives, artificial flavorings, colors, or food dyes, and somehow we all managed to grow up normal, well-adjusted, without issues, medications and tags to our age that are over used, handed out and greatly misaligned today. On a sweeter note, my all time favorite candy was Sponge Bar -- dark chocolate over two pieces of a molasses honey comb sponge like crunchy center. Every so often, I'm still able to find it. And ever think what the wax lips, whistles, and mustaches were made of? Not to mention the best gum ever. Wonder how it would chew over my crowns?
Later from Andy Dolich: One other thing, Millwood is a figment of a bad imagination. "Give me Green Acres, or give me death."
From Henry Gabbay: I was watching an NBA game, and I recall watching a playoff game many years ago. One of the refs was Walter Rooney. I think he is the same person who taught history at South and coached the JV basketball team. Can someone confirm this? Thanks.
From Sandy Tarter. Molly and Leo's. The Rendezvous. My favorite candy was Sweetarts -- I think it came out in '66 or '67. I named my '57 Chevy Sweetarts and painted it on the fender.
Also, I can't believe nobody's mentioned Shore's in Hewlett and Marty Howard's underage drinking bar in the Valley Stream train station. I could pick out a lot of names from last week's notes of guy and dolls who went to Marty Howard's to party. I would love to get an e-mail address for Barnett Zinger. He went to a school in Colorado and helped me with a lot of information, and I never got a chance to thank him. We had a lot of friends from Colorado. I can't tell you how many friends I've found again, partly though connections made from this newsletter. It's a gift. Thank you all.
From Mary Sipp-Green: I just sent an e-mail to the art department chair from Kean University whose address you mentioned. I'll keep you all posted. Meanwhile, thanks a lot and best regards.
[Rich -- If anyone else wants to join the hunt for Joe Jochnowitz, please write department chair Jennifer Crupi at: jcrupi@kean.edu]
From Joanne Shapiro Polner again: Thanks for putting in the candy paragraph. Barbara Pech responded to me directly, which was nice. Also, I looked up wax bottles and came up with the following site -- a complete review of the candy of the 50s, I'd say. After all of you finish your own candy trips down memory lane, you can read about everything else at this site. The link is:

Finally, I think there's an Alumni Association meeting at South this Thursday evening, 5-7-09. If you're interested in going, please check the date with Emily Kleinman Schreiber at: cre8em@aol.com
