Update 10-18-11
Hi,
Some notes and then some more vintage filler.
Andy Dolich wrote to straighten me out on the order of his brothers:
Ira -- 75 -- retired -- living in southern New Jersey
Dr. Barry -- 70 -- surgeon -- practicing in New York City
Andy also added:
My mom would have been proud of your shout out on having an orderly little abode.
Amy Bentley wrote to say she'd posted a "Thank You" note on the Facebook, South class of '71 reunion page, informing them of their kind donation to the Booker Gibson / Vince Tampio scholarship funds.
[Rich -- I got Amy's check and will deposit it today, holding the money toward next spring's awards.]
Emily Kleinman Schreiber wrote saying: The class of '61 reunion -- my class -- will be held on Saturday, October 22nd, from 1:00 to 6:00, at the Oceanside Knights of Columbus. It will be Number Fifty, and that blows my mind!
Please mention it in case some younger people want to help us celebrate or have siblings in the class. It's amazing how many former kids from the class of '61 are going to attend. Quite a few haven't been back to South since we graduated.
Also, please remind interested people that Homecoming will take place earlier that day, October 22nd, at South. Members of my class will meet in the school library at 11:00, and our class will be honored during the pre-game. I hope to see many of you there.
Also on Facebook, Irene Saunders Goldstein is tracking some members of her family. She wrote:
I urge my Saunders cousins and my other Goldberg cousins -- especially those who also descend from Morris -- to see this new site that focuses on our ancestral town in what is now Lithuania. The site was established by our Swedish cousin Adam Katzeff, who has posted a photo of my great-grandmother Hannah Katzeff Yoselovich/Goldberg that was in Bert Saunders's photo album. If you have old photos of people you know to be early-generation Goldbergs, as well as unidentified photos that you don't know what to do with, feel free to contact me. Maybe some of them belong here, too!
[Rich -- I know Goldberg is a fairly common name, so it's the quarter of my family I've never investigated because I thought there'd be too many people -- my grandmother had nine brothers and sisters just in her immediate family. But her parents came from Germany, not Lithuania, so I doubt Irene and I are related.]
Also on Facebook, Irene wished Peggy Cooper Schwartz a "Happy Birthday," so I guess we can, too. And Nancy Garfield's birthday is coming up. And Judy Schulman's. And probably several other people's.
Finally, that vintage filler -- all social news this week, the writers uncredited -- from the May 29th, 1957 Southern Belle:
Juniors Hold First Ring Dance
On Saturday night, May 11, South Hall was the site of the first annual Junior Class Ring Dance. All senior high students were invited to attend the gala occasion and 200 of them accepted the invitation. The theme of the dance, carried out in the decorations, was "Out of My Dreams". Central's Blue Notes provided the music to "dance the night away". The evening was climaxed by the ring ceremony. Don Dunning, the Junior Class president, presented the rings to the girls, while the boys received theirs from Carol Lagin, vice-president. The recipients came up in couples in alphabetical order. Afterward, the dancing continued until midnight.
Freshman Make Dance Plans
The last big social event for the Freshmen will be "Hello Young Lovers", a semi-formal dance for the senior high students to be held Wednesday, May 29th in South Hall. As the title suggests, this dance is for couples only. The admission charge will be $1.75. The Serrone Brothers will provide live music from 8:00 p.m. until the midnight hour. With their new social advisor, Mr. Benevento, the ninth grade council are planning their social activities for next year. They hope to have at least four social gatherings, including a beach party, a semi-formal dance, and a class play.
Eighth Grade To Have Beach Party
The student council of the eighth grade has been planning a beach party, to be held sometime next month. They have discussed, but not selected, a definite time and place. The council has discussed the merits of Jones Beach, Hewlett Beach, and Point Lookout as possible party sites. The students will be going by bus and will take their lunches along. The student council has not definitely decided whether students of other grades will be permitted on the trip.
