Update 9-10-13
Hi,
Ah, yes: a belated happy new year to those who celebrate. Evidently, I don't, or I wouldn't have forgotten. Linda Cohen Greenseid and Barbara Blitfield Pech reminded me when they sent greetings to all.
From Andy Dolich: In answer to Amy Kassak Bentley -- Carol and Natalie Lagin were the daughters of Nat and Rose Lagin. Carol is married to my brother Dr. Barry Dolich. They have 2 sons, and they live in Westchester County. Natalie is married and lives in North Carolina.
From Amy Kassak Bemtley: Mort Jacobs may live in the Garden Apartments in Green Acres/Mill Brook. I'm not sure, but it's a possibility because an Internet search brings up an address for him there.
From Amy Miller Cohen: I am assuming the Dave mentioned is David Greenberg, who is from the class of '63. Was the Roger Rubenstein our own, whose sister was Sheila from class of 1958? Carol Lagin was also in my sister's class of 1958, and may be married Barry Dolich. And I moved to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, when my husband became a dean of students at Lehigh in 1979. All I knew about Lehigh was wrestling, engineering, and that my uncle didn't get accepted in the 1930s because of his religion.
Some further information, from one of our other wonderful sleuths, Joanne Shapiro Polner: The 1958 South High yearbook notes of Carol Lagin: Her interests include, yearbook, theater, class councils and socials, cheerleading, and five sports. She is featured as Southern Belle with a Southern Beau. At the time, the voted gentleman was Don Dunning, the twin of Dan Dunning. Don married married Corinne Smith, class of '59. Carol Lagin married Barry Dolich, class of '58, in August1963, according to The New York Times.
From Jay Berliner: Talking about things from the past -- Bert Ottinger, of Kirschstein, Kirschstein, Ottinger and Frank, was our attorney when my company was sued by Bristol Myers. After it was all said and done, we fought to a draw that both companies could live with. We were very beholden to Mr. Ottinger for all his hard work because Bristol Myers could have bled us white. I never knew the South connection before.
From Linda Cohen Greenseid to Zelda White Nichols -- I remember Elaine Egan, but unfortunately, I have no idea where she is.
From Ed Albrecht: Would you please post apologies on the fact that I thought Frank Bonlarron had managed "The Left Banke." Obviously, I was misinformed. Let's try "The Strawberry Alarm Clock." I was also told that.
From Peter Rosen: Eddie Bonlarron threw one of best football passes I have ever seen to this day. It always was a perfect spiral with the nose slightly up. Very easy to catch, and it looked so good. Also, I’m in for the class of 65's 50th reunion, wherever it is.
[Rich -- Some accumulated comments on all the above. Yep, it's been noted here before that Carol Lagin married Barry Dolich. We've even read articles they wrote for the school paper. If the newsletters were grouped and searchable, I could have found that out.
We've also noted that Mort Jacobs may still be living in Green Acres/Mill Brook, and I remembered that. But I was hoping someone had additional information.
I don't know about Roger Rubenstein, but I'd asked Dave Greenberg if he was any relationship to Robert Greenberg from the class of '65. He isn't, so we still don't know where Robert went.
And I don't see any reason for Ed Albrecht to apologize because his misinformation led to some really interesting conversations. So thanks, Ed.
Also, someone told me privately that Irene Cohen still lives on Long Island, knows about the reunions and the newsletters, and has no interest and doesn't want to be found. If anyone remembers how this newsletter began, it was just with a free class contact list to bypass the paid Classmates com site. All I wanted to do was put people in touch with people they were interested in reconnecting with. These days, Facebook does that extremely well, and I hope that Irene's listed there, so if someone like Patti Rose Nacht wants to find her, she can. For all I know, they live 5-or-10 miles apart, and it would have been great to tell them each that.
Finally, some sadder news. At the back entrance of Green Acres/Mill Brook, next to where King Kullen and then Annie Sez were and where Key Foods now is, there's a deli/bakery named Jerry's Bagels. It's been there since the 1980s and is owned and run by Sue and Jerry Jacobs. Jerry graduated from South in 1978, in the same class as my brother David. Jerry, Mike Weiner, Don Plotsky, and David were best friends, right up until last week. Then Jerry died, suddenly, at 53.
David said it's still surreal. A half-dozen high school friends were able to make it to Jerry's funeral, and more gathered to remember him on Saturday night. David was Jerry's best man, and he gave the eulogy. Eventually, I may ask him if I can run the whole eulogy here because it's a capsule of the joys of what growing up in Green Acres and possibly any suburb could be and probably still can. Jerry, Mike, Don, and David stayed close though they've often lived thousands of miles apart. There's just one funny story that I'm pulling out of the eulogy to remember Jerry here.]
From David Eisbrouch: Everywhere in his life, Jerry had an appetite, but nothing gave him more stamina and drive than his wife Susan and their four beautiful children. One recent story that Jerry shared with me – and he shared a lot – was from a few months ago when that insatiable appetite of his arose in the middle of the night, and he reached over to seek comfort with his bride. To Jerry’s surprise, he felt a hand pushing him away, but he couldn’t understand why. When he asked Sue in the morning why she rejected him, she said she didn’t know what he was talking about, and that 13-year-old Ben had been sleeping between them because he wasn’t feeling well. This one took Jerry a good day-or-two to get over.
