Update 4-5-05
All right,
A light week for mail, lost, as we are, in a holiday limbo between Easter and an unusually late Passover. And there have been deaths, internationally, and distractions. So, first, a little inter-class news, then some reflection. Finally, the growing party-goers list and repeating reunion information.
From Linda Cohen Greenseid: I don't know if Jerry Bittman is aware of this, but when I was browsing this month's PBS TV magazine (channel 13 in New York), I noticed that his cousin, Mark, author of How To Cook Everything, will be featured on a Sunday series beginning April 17th at 4:30 PM. The blurb says he "goes one-on-one with some of the country's most talented chefs."
Next, from Steve Cahn, Class of '70: The new Class of '70 web site is up, and it can be viewed at: www.geocities.com/vssouth70 Ninety-six classmates are now participating, but we still have 216 more to locate.
We've heard from more faculty members, and I'll soon formally be requesting help with treasury, activity, and other functions. Meanwhile, please stop by and visit, then e-mail your comments, including info about errors and misspellings. Thanks.
[Rich -- from me: Now that South's Class of '05 is little more than two months from graduation, I've written Liz King Giordano, Principal Stephen Lando's secretary, asking about this year's winners of the Booker Gibson and Vince Tampio scholarships. I'll let you know their names as soon as I can, and we should have their "thank you" notes and bios by midsummer. Meanwhile, if anyone is bold enough to confront the three-hour ceremony and wants to present the awards, please let me know. But first ask Booker Gibson and Robert Fiveson about the seats.]
[Rich -- more from me, some slight reflection: I was just east for my niece's bat mitzvah, and for the first time, in a group of almost two hundred people, all family and friends, I was practically the oldest one there.
I'm the oldest of four kids and of eight first cousins. Some of our parents are still alive, but they're getting to the age where they don't get out much anymore, which is why they mainly skipped this occasion. And they're at the age where my sister, brothers, cousins, and I aren't quite sure what to do with them. Love 'em, yeah. Support 'em emotionally and let them have their independence, of course. But the image of that sweet man in Santa Monica, who lived an ideal live, then accidentally plowed into a Farmer's Market at 88, killing, I think, 10 people keeps coming back.
At one point I said to one of my cousins that I thought our parents did a better job of helping their aging parents than we seem to be doing with ours. Maybe because our parents are older, and our shared world more technologically complex. Maybe because so many of us have moved some distance from our parents, or they've moved so far from us. Maybe because our generation seems more focused on its kids than our parents were on us: we were allowed to run free; kids today call their parents hourly, when not being shepherded to organized events. Then I thought more specifically about my family, and I realized that not only did my parents not do a better job of helping their parents in their final years, but their parents didn't do any better with my great-grandparents.
So maybe it's just a matter of -- one more time -- trying hard, doing our best, and hoping for a little luck. The men in my family seem to take that luck simply by dying in their 70s, but the women go on forever. So they're the ones I'm worried about.]

Update 3-29-05
Hi,
Just got home from four busy days away, and I'm a little dazed. So the mail, in the order it came:
From Zelda White Nichols: What a nice surprise -- I received an e-mail the other day from Alan Bendel, along with his phone number. It turns out that my husband and I moved to within an hour's drive of Alan, and he recognized our location from my e-mail address. We had a lot of fun filling each other in on the last 40 years -- it can't possibly be that long, can it? -- and we hope to get together, along with our spouses, for a visit in the next few weeks.
From Barbara Blitfield Pech: This past weekend, March 19th, my son Evan officially took himself off the market and married his best girl and middle school sweetheart Jessica Zelman. It was a lovely wedding made even better by sharing the festivities with my best friends, Robin Feit Baker and Carol Ewig Duran, who came in from Chicago and New York (regrets were sent from Ellen Epstein Silver). I am sure that many of us have been down the aisle with at least one child by now, but as a first timer and a single parent of an only child, wow, this is something that can't be explained. The emotions just kind of take hold and don't let go. But the joy, reassurance, and comfort of looking out into the guest group and seeing my two best, lifelong friends sharing day with me just added to who we are, and what we are to each other. If I haven't already said "Thank you" 1965 times to you and us, please allow me this one more time.

From Jerry Bittman: I just got back to Nebraska after spending 15 days in Florida. It was a great, great vacation, but then getting out of Nebraska to go anywhere would be considered a great vacation.
Really, though, everything went perfectly, and so many good things happened to me while in Florida. While playing poker in an Indian casino, I was offered a job by a man who owns a dealing school -- no, not drugs -- dealing all the casino games. I was seriously contemplating accepting the position when something else developed. I am going into business with two of my friends -- it is related to poker, and it was my brainstorm. I will be heading to Nevada and California in June to call on all the casinos in Nevada and the poker rooms in California. The item is currently being manufactured in Florida, and the prototype will be completed in approximately 6 to 8 weeks. Besides this item, we are also producing two completely different items. One of those, we have was sent to my partners' business connection in Thailand to manufacture. That should also be ready in about two months. I am so excited about these ventures, and I can't wait to see South High alumni in California.
I also got to see four Mets games while in Florida. For the first two games, our seats were in the front row, next to the Mets' bullpen. We talked to the players the whole time and received quite a bit of inside information. Jason Phillips, the Mets reserve catcher, was especially great, and Friday night, we talked for all nine innings. Unfortunately, two days later, he was traded to the Dodgers, and one of the relief pitchers on Sunday kidded me by saying that none of the other players would talk to me -- they were afraid that if they did, they would also be traded.
The people in Florida were great, and I won quite a bit of money playing poker, so that paid for my trip. However, the real highlight of my vacation was seeing Barney Zinger and his beautiful wife Helen. I must admit that Barney got the best of that deal. After going out to dinner, we went back to Barney's house and sat on the patio reminiscing. Before we knew it, six hours had elapsed, and it was 2:00 AM. Zing, thank you for a great time, buddy, and I can't wait till next year so we can visit again and also go to your gym.
That's all the news from the Cornhusker state. I hope to be seeing many of you in California and Nevada, come June and July.
[Rich -- Something I've been meaning to mention for a while: both Barnet Kellman, as director, and Jamie Kelman, as make-up artist, have occasionally worked on the hit TV show Alias. Jamie's the son of Linda Cohen Greenseid and Rob Kelman. He lives in LA with his wife and really cute kid, and, more often, does special effects make-up -- bloating hands and exploding faces.]

Also, from Jean Cohen Oklan: My husband and I will be driving to New York City for a gig that my son, Ezra, is having on Saturday, March 26th, at 9:30 PM at Don Hill's TISWAS, 511 Greenwich Street, on the corner of Spring Street. National Public Radio is going to be there, videotaping the band for a show pilot to possibly air April 15th on Showtime. The NPR camera crew spent all day yesterday in Burlington, Vermont, interviewing and getting to know the guys in the band.
If you can make it to Don Hill's (and I hope you can), mention at the door that you are there to hear GOP (Ghosts of Pasha). And realize that you will be supporting a group of guys who went to school for performance, and who have had this dream ever since they can remember.
They sound great, albeit loud. These days, gigs at rock clubs in New York City only last about an hour, so you'll only need your earplugs in for a short time! Please come out and support the band. I'd love to see you there!
A slight correction from Jean: I mentioned that my son's gig is being filmed for a show pilot, but I didn't mean to make it sound like a reality show. It's not, in the sense that my son's band will not be competing with any other bands. This show will profile American lives, and it's a pilot for a spinoff of the popular (and terrific) NPR program called "This American Life" with Ira Glass. Calling it a "reality show" doesn't do it justice!
From Peter Rosen: Still love these Tuesday mornings sitting with a cup of coffee, reading the updates. Do you think the time has come to start listing the names of those who have said "yes" so far for the reunion? It might spur others on. Can't wait to see you and everyone else.

A tax note: Someone recently asked if I could send a note confirming a donation to the Vince Tampio scholarship fund. Of course, I can, and I'm sorry I didn't think of it sooner -- that's why I never became an accountant. I can also send notes confirming Booker Gibson scholarship contributions. Just ask. Unfortunately, going to the reunion isn't tax deductible, except it you're doing it for a science project.
From a little bit of accidental research: Ricky -- that would probably be Rick now -- Blumenthal was in the class of '70.
Finally, a story I've just been reminded about: When I was in my early forties, I lost a filling in one of my molars. I was nowhere near home, so had to use a dentist I got on recommendation. His receptionist was great about working me into their busy schedule, and as I sat in the dentist's chair, I was asked what kind of pain killer I usually used: "Gas? Novocain? Is there anything you're allergic to?"
"Pain killer?" I asked. "It's just a filling."
"But we always use pain killers," the hygienist told me.
"Why? I've never had them. I've just sort of gripped the hand rests and signaled to the dentist when it was getting too much."
"You're kidding," the dentist put in. "How long has this been going on?"
"All my life. I've only ever had one dentist. He just retired."
"And a good thing, too," he laughed.
Such was the legacy of Eddie Zuckerman

Update 3-15-05
Hey,
Business math: You have three deadlines. The first is for $750 in October. The second is for $1000 in February. The third is for $7250 in mid-June. You have 24 reservations, each for $100. It's March. How many more reservations will you need to make the June 15th deadline?
No immediate need to answer. No prizes given for the fastest reply. And I know that people need to get closer to August to finalize their plans. But soon after Easter, Dennis Shapiro will start sending me the list of people planning to attend the reunion, so we'll start some kind of formal countdown. Meanwhile, you've got Dennis perched on a swing over a vat of boiling water. It all depends how long you want to keep him there.

Selected works by Mary Sipp-Green are at the Springfield Museum Of Fine Arts in Springfield, Massachusetts under the title "Landscapes." The paintings are all in private collections and were done between 1990 and 2004. The exhibit opened on January 26th and will only run through April 2nd. Some comments from Heather R. Haskell, the museum director: "Several years ago, I was introduced to the luminous landscape paintings of Mary Sipp-Green, an artist living and working in the Berkshire Hills. Wanting to share her work with my colleagues, I projected the slides of her paintings on a screen. Gasps, followed by 'wow' and 'beautiful' echoed through the room. There was then silence as everyone contemplated the scenes before participating in an enthusiastic discussion on how the landscapes masterfully evoked emotion as well as a sense of familiarity."

An excerpt: Though it has suffered the ignominy of being lampooned on Mystery Science Theatre 3000 Clonus really isn't that bad, benefiting from a strong central idea that has become more rather than less relevant thanks to advances in genetics and cloning over the past quarter century and the ethical, philosophical and legal debates they give rise to. Admittedly, the story is ridden with inconsistencies... but, equally, it is no more so than the norm for low-budget science fiction... or, for that matter, many a mainstream Hollywood entry... Overall... while no classic, [the film] contains the germ of a good idea later to be exploited by the likes of the overrated The Truman Show. Mondo Macabro's Region 0 NTSC disc looks and sounds good for a film of Clonus's vintage and low budget -- $270,000 for a 35mm feature -- origins... The extras package is where things really shine, however. The centerpiece is an honest and entertaining commentary from director Robert Fiveson and Mondo Macabro's Pete Tombs that gives a lot of insight into the process of making a film of this sort -- scouting locations; stealing shots; getting things for free or cheap, dealing with actors and problem scenes etc. -- as does the interview featurette with Fiveson, which also goes into more detail on his background and how he got into the film business. Business math: You have three deadlines. The first is for $750 in October. The second is for $1000 in February. The third is for $7250 in mid-June. You have 24 reservations, each for $100. It's March. How many more reservations will you need to make the June 15th deadline?

Hi,
As I've been promising, my updated crib sheet for South addresses.
The e-mail addresses have been receiving the newsletter every week.
The ones with the notation (no longer responding) may still be valid e-mail addresses, but the updates bounce back each week as undeliverable. So the addresses may be blocked to me, or blocked by a spam filter, or just no longer in existence.
The ones marked PHONE mean the people don't use e-mail, but can be contacted by phone, and I either have the number or know some way to get it.
The ones marked c/o Someone Else's Name mean the second person is the contact person for the first one and can usually be reached by e-mail.
The ones with a name and no other notes mainly mean that during the great alumni hunt of 2001, Paul DeMartino was able to able to talk to that person's answering machine or talk with someone who knew that person was still alive, but was never actually able to get a response from that person.
The ones marked c/o CLASSMATES.COM mean that person is currently listed on Classmates.com, but hasn't responded when I've sent them blind e-mail. Of course, Ken Seelig is still listed on Classmates.com, though I've tried politely pointing out to their webmaster that, unfortunately, Ken died almost four years ago. But Classmates doesn't seem to care about that, as evidentially, their success rests on numbers. The ones marked no longer on CLASSMATES.COM means they once were listed on that website, but that doesn't mean they're no longer with us. It just means they've, somehow, managed to get themselves unlisted from that spider's web.
The one marked WANTS NO CONTACT is just that. There are other folks who also don't seem to be interested, but they didn't say it quite so bluntly.
These are mainly former Class of '65 students, but there are some teachers and some guests who contribute regularly to the newsletter. In most cases, I've just noted last names in 1965. I've added first names when people share the same last name.

As I've been promising, my updated crib sheet for South addresses.
The e-mail addresses have been receiving the newsletter every week.
The ones with the notation (no longer responding) may still be valid e-mail addresses, but the updates bounce back each week as undeliverable. So the addresses may be blocked to me, or blocked by a spam filter, or just no longer in existence.
The ones marked PHONE mean the people don't use e-mail, but can be contacted by phone, and I either have the number or know some way to get it.
The ones marked c/o Someone Else's Name mean the second person is the contact person for the first one and can usually be reached by e-mail.
The ones with a name and no other notes mainly mean that during the great alumni hunt of 2001, Paul DeMartino was able to able to talk to that person's answering machine or talk with someone who knew that person was still alive, but was never actually able to get a response from that person.
The ones marked c/o CLASSMATES.COM mean that person is currently listed on Classmates.com, but hasn't responded when I've sent them blind e-mail. Of course, Ken Seelig is still listed on Classmates.com, though I've tried politely pointing out to their webmaster that, unfortunately, Ken died almost four years ago. But Classmates doesn't seem to care about that, as evidentially, their success rests on numbers. The ones marked no longer on CLASSMATES.COM means they once were listed on that website, but that doesn't mean they're no longer with us. It just means they've, somehow, managed to get themselves unlisted from that spider's web.
The one marked WANTS NO CONTACT is just that. There are other folks who also don't seem to be interested, but they didn't say it quite so bluntly.
These are mainly former Class of '65 students, but there are some teachers and some guests who contribute regularly to the newsletter. In most cases, I've just noted last names in 1965. I've added first names when people share the same last name.

Update 3-1-05
Hi,
Easy week, with enough mail so I didn't have to do my threatened online address clean-up. Instead, I faced my taxes.
First, from Zelda White Nichols: An Update. We have moved into our house in Lexington, North Carolina, but are still in the process of unpacking 350 boxes. The trip was mostly uneventful until we hit Georgia, where I started coughing, three cats started howling, we arrived just in time for a massive ice storm, and my husband Dave's SUV started hiccupping. Fortunately it got us to North Carolina before needing to be towed from the hotel parking lot. I ended up with a roaring case of the flu which I am finally recovering from.
We are really starting to love North Carolina: beautiful countryside (we are amidst cotton fields, cow pastures, and forest), great for sports, and the people are wonderful. You know all those "Remember When" e-mails that circulate? Well, I don't need to remember any longer; I feel like we are back in those times with the slower pace. Lifestyles seem easier here, and there is still a sense of innocence that is very sweet. One local restaurant (luncheonette) even has Fried Twinkies on their menu.
Sorry about all that rain you're having in California. A friend who lives here asked that we bring some California sunshine with us, so we did. It's been mostly sunny since we arrived. Want to think about relocating? LOL.
Finally, I am hoping to attend the reunion, but cannot commit yet.

Next, from Booker Gibson: Sometime last year, a group of about eight former South people came to visit me in the restaurant where I play the piano. That group was from the late 70s, and their teacher, Linda Murtagh, was with them. She left South about 1988, after I left in '86.
Anyway, I talked about Vince Tampio, and a couple of the girls -- there I go again; I have to remember they're working adults -- came up to sing with me. One person, Sherry Finkel Murphy -- Neil Murphy was the student lighting designer while they were at South -- always likes to sing the song that Vince and I wrote. She has a wonderful voice and range, but never thought she could try for show business because she was too short. Whenever I see or hear Bernadette Peters, I think of our Sherry Finkel. Nevertheless, she's a "big-time" businesswoman in Manhattan.
Later, I invited her to visit here sometime -- we both live in Merrick -- and we could rehearse the song, "Even In A Crowd." She also was a helluva Winifred in Once Upon A Mattress.
Please excuse my rambling sentences. I should have had Janet Porter Rylander for English, too.
[Rich -- I think it would be great if Sherry came to the reunion and sang Booker and Vince's song.]

[Rich -- I wrote Steve the following: Valerie Nelson, yes, and we'd love to find her. Gene Barkin, class of '66. Ken Getnick, class of '64, I think. Richard Getnick, earlier I think, but I'm not sure. Nothing on the rest.]

Even though these people were four and five years older than I was, it almost seemed as if they were connected with a different decade. I guess music and the general outlook of the nation changed so much in the time from '65 to '70.
Unfortunately, I have no leads as to Valerie Nelson's whereabouts. But I will ask a few people to see if we can come up with anything.

Linda Fenton Goodgold sent the following to update her profile on the home page, but until I get organized, here's what she's been doing: I'm now the Vice President of Business Development for Real Estate Arts, a New York City design firm, and I oversee New Jersey development. I previously worked for New Jersey Goodlife magazine handling New Jersey real estate, and then moved to the Gannett New Jersey Newspaper Group. At Gannett, I started in print advertising, and then went to "IN Jersey," the Internet arm of the Asbury Park Press as Sales Manager and Online Manager.
I have two children, Michael and Steven. Michael is married to Laura, a fabulous lady, and they have two children, Natalie, age 3, and Andrew, 3 months. My grandchildren are the joy of my life. Michael owns and operates Commercial Printing companies with offices in New York City, Chicago, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Steven is a talent agent for Chaotica Music and lives and works in New York City while traveling all over the world with his clients. His life has been a little too exciting, but he has finally met an awesome lady, and I think this may be "the one."
I think I will be going to the reunion and can't wait to see all my friends.

Finally, from Allen Moss in Maine: Many thanks to Mr. O'Brien, Mr. Gibson, and others who helped track down Janet Porter Rylander -- from the "boy who was clamoring," and that... "be me!" I sent Janet an e-mail this morning, and I hope she chooses to attend the reunion, as it would be great to see her. I also hope Ms. Rea is able to attend this time around. It would not be the same without her and many of our wonderful teachers.
I reminded Janet about her love affair with her little VW "bug." I always remember her tooling around the parking lot in it. That also brought to mind Mr. Tampio's 1964 Mustang. Both are great collectors' items today. And I reminded Janet, with a smile, about the smart-ass behavior that Greg Kaplan and I exhibited in her classroom. She knew EXACTLY how to deal with it as well -- just a quick, dry-witted comment beginning with, "Mr. Moss and Mr. Kaplan, would you mind..." That was accompanied by an icy stare (and a little bit of a smile). Lots of fun and, certainly, as with Toni Rea, a supportive and encouraging teacher who made English and the written word such an important part of my life after high school. It was so nice to read what a full life she has had... and continues to have.
Just an aside: for an incredible TV nostalgia buff like me, the creation of the DVD has been a gift from the gods. I am amazed at how much television programming from the 1950s is literally pouring out of the manufacturers. Everything from "Have Gun-Will Travel" to "Medic" to "Bat Masterson." And the quality of some of these fifty-year-old shows is truly remarkable. I happened to surf on a site that brought back some REALLY old memories -- "Andy's Gang" and "Terrytoon Circus." If you have "Real Player" on your computer, you can watch a kinescope clip from the early 1950s showing the famous call-up to "Froggy, the Gremlin" by Andy with those famous words, "Plunk your magic twanger, Froggy." In a puff of smoke on the tall clock comes this dime store-looking bathtub toy that starts talking to Andy. What an incredible hoot! And there they were as I watched, the baby-boomer kids in the audience -- our peers -- laughing their asses off. And I am sure that I was, too, as I sat in front of my Philco set in the living room! Ditto for the kinescope clip on Terrytoon Circus with Claude Kirschner... scary!
I have been a VERY happy camper in Maine these last few weeks: bitter cold and 18 inches of snow about a week-and-a-half ago, with another 5 yesterday, and 4 more expected to be added tonight. I know. I know. I am nuts! But what better state to live in if I love cold weather and snow?

Steven is a talent agent for Chaotica Music and lives and works in New York City while traveling all over the world with his clients. His life has been a little too exciting, but he has finally met an awesome lady, and I think this may be "the one."

Finally, from Allen Moss in Maine: Many thanks to Mr. O'Brien, Mr. Gibson, and others who helped track down Janet Porter Rylander -- from the "boy who was clamoring," and that... "be me!" I sent Janet an e-mail this morning, and I hope she chooses to attend the reunion, as it would be great to see her. I also hope Ms. Rea is able to attend this time around. It would not be the same without her and many of our wonderful teachers.
I reminded Janet about her love affair with her little VW "bug." I always remember her tooling around the parking lot in it. That also brought to mind Mr. Tampio's 1964 Mustang. Both are great collectors' items today. And I reminded Janet, with a smile, about the smart-ass behavior that Greg Kaplan and I exhibited in her classroom. She knew EXACTLY how to deal with it as well -- just a quick, dry-witted comment beginning with, "Mr. Moss and Mr. Kaplan, would you mind..." That was accompanied by an icy stare (and a little bit of a smile). Lots of fun and, certainly, as with Toni Rea, a supportive and encouraging teacher who made English and the written word such an important part of my life after high school. It was so nice to read what a full life she has had... and continues to have.
Just an aside: for an incredible TV nostalgia buff like me, the creation of the DVD has been a gift from the gods. I am amazed at how much television programming from the 1950s is literally pouring out of the manufacturers. Everything from "Have Gun-Will Travel" to "Medic" to "Bat Masterson." And the quality of some of these fifty-year-old shows is truly remarkable. I happened to surf on a site that brought back some REALLY old memories -- "Andy's Gang" and "Terrytoon Circus." If you have "Real Player" on your computer, you can watch a kinescope clip from the early 1950s showing the famous call-up to "Froggy, the Gremlin" by Andy with those famous words, "Plunk your magic twanger, Froggy." In a puff of smoke on the tall clock comes this dime store-looking bathtub toy that starts talking to Andy. What an incredible hoot! And there they were as I watched, the baby-boomer kids in the audience -- our peers -- laughing their asses off. And I am sure that I was, too, as I sat in front of my Philco set in the living room! Ditto for the kinescope clip on Terrytoon Circus with Claude Kirschner... scary!
I have been a VERY happy camper in Maine these last few weeks: bitter cold and 18 inches of snow about a week-and-a-half ago, with another 5 yesterday, and 4 more expected to be added tonight. I know. I know. I am nuts! But what better state to live in if I love cold weather and snow?

My best contact has always been Janet Anast, and she gave me Ann Arvantides' address.
Janet, I hope you and Tom have been doing well. My second marriage -- since 1971 -- has been very happy, and I have an additional son, who is now thirty. I retired from South High in 1986, after thirty years, and I now play piano, locally, a couple of nights a week. My wife retired about ten years ago, and she sings in a very fine choir. She's also a big fan of "Home & Gardens TV." We've thought about moving south to North Carolina or Atlanta, but we don't have the guts to do it. Also, I'll be 75 later this year. Bye for now.

I was in your ninth grade English class at South. It was 1962, probably your first year teaching. You taught me how to write, I've always been grateful for that, and I've always credited you with being the first teacher to give me a respect for words.
The Class of '65 got together for a 37th reunion, and we were able to find some of our former teachers. People asked about you, but we weren't able to find you, partly because we thought you'd married a history teacher named Van Tassel. Bernie O'Brien just corrected that impression, then Booker Gibson contacted Janet Anast, who gave us your e-mail address. I hope you don't mind this intrusion.
Our class is having a 40th reunion this summer, and we're inviting any of our former teachers that we can find. If you happen to be in New York in early August, there's a group of people who'd be happy to see you. Tom and I live in Estero, Florida (near Naples) for eight months and in Madison, Connecticut for four months.
I retired from teaching five years ago with an early buy-out, having completed 33 years of teaching both in Valley Stream and in Madison. Tom taught business ed. at South High for six years and went on to New York City for many years as a publisher of a building magazine. He retired as the mayor of Madison five years ago when we bought here in Florida.
We have two children - Jennifer, age 38, a neo-natologist, two children, and Tom, age 35, a Major in the Army, hospital administrator, married just this weekend in North Carolina.
Must go to play tennis now but will write again when time is more convenient.

I married Tom Rylander who was a business ed. teacher at South for six years. Afterwards, we moved to Connecticut, and he commuted to New York City daily where he published a building trade magazine. I continued teaching English in Madison, Connecticut where later I became department chair before retiring five years ago having been offered a lucrative five year buyout. That buyout allowed us (Tom at that point was the mayor of Madison) to move for eight months yearly to a golf community in Estero, Florida, near Naples where I play at golf and enjoy a much more rewarding experience with tennis.
I have two children, ages 38 and 35. The older child is a neo-natologist with two of her own children. My son, a hospital administrator, is a major in the Army, married just this past weekend in North Carolina.
I will return to Madison in middle May if you want to contact me then.
You were a student in my second year of teaching English at South. I know I tried hard, but I wonder if I really deserve your praise, very much appreciated.
I can't believe Booker Gibson is 75. I e-mail Ann Arvantides Bantuvanis fairly regularly. Don Hicks has been sickly, but he would probably like to be included. If you choose to invite him to the reunion, Ann or I could provide the address. Please convey to Booker that his e-mail to me certainly betrays he's forgotten a bit much about me. I especially remember his laugh and visiting while he played to audiences at the various local clubs on Long Island.

Also, I was on Classmates.com last night, to see if any other missing classmates had turned up. Nope. And while it seems that Classmates has changed its software since I last checked the site, and they have managed to reduce some of the duplications, I noticed that Ken Seelig is still listed, though, unfortunately, he hasn't been with us for several years. I haven't rejoined Classmates yet, since there's been no reason, but I will in the spring so I can send reunion invitations to the people only listed there. Still, as we've never heard back from many of them before -- and we're talking about over a dozen people -- I'm not sure the e-mail addresses they originally gave Classmates are still active.
Finally, I'll be stripping most of the 37th reunion photos off the home page to make room for the 40th reunion pictures. I hope to keep one flattering shot of every person there, so if there's a picture of yourself that you prefer, now would be the time to send it to me.]
And, yes, it's raining again in Los Angeles -- six inches last night, measured by the dog's official precipitation-catching bowl. That makes California now uncommonly green, though it will be especially brown and dry in the fall, when we'll have the annual national coverage of our fires. Oh, and did I mention mudslides?
