Update 4-19-05
Hi,
Ah, communication. After reading several dozen letters this week, it seemed that, yes, we could have hit a perfect storm in reunion planning: wrong time, too soon, too expensive. Then it turned out the bigger problem was something else: once people started discovering conflicts between their plans and the reunion date, they figured it was just them and didn't say anything because they didn't want to ruin the party for everyone else. But one-by-one we lost half the people from our initial base of 50, the base we were planning to build on to reach 100. It turns out there are at least three classmate-related weddings on August 6th, and people have travel plans, or vacation plans, or remodeling plans, or their kids are about to go to college, or their kids are about to have babies, or their parents are about to move in. Lots of reasons. All good.
Unfortunately, the hotel will in no way let us even alter our contract. I spoke with my brother, a lawyer, about it, and he mentioned that his firm had a similar hotel contract for a party scheduled soon after September 11th. All his lawyers, even using that tragedy as unfortunate leverage, couldn't break the contract. So it looks like we're going to have to have a party, which is not the worst of things. And we're going to have fun, which ain't a bad idea, either. And we're going to dance. This is especially good because, after all, there won't be another reunion till 2015, when most of us will be 68.
In addition to explanations and apologies, a lot of people sent in suggestions. Here are some of the best. Of course, to raise money, I could simply sell those X-rated photos of Mr. Bergen. Oops. Sorry. No. The Internet is not for porn.
From Paul DeMartino: I just spoke with my sister Elaine, class of '67, and she says that she is interested in attending and will call another of her classmates that she still sees and tell her. However, she thinks that we should limit it to a reunion of the classes from the 60's to early 70's. She thinks that we all will be more comfortable with those of our generation rather than with people from the classes of the mid-70's to present. She suggests that I phrase it to Newsday to be a Valley Stream South 60's Reunion. It’s a thought and the first feed back from another class, so it may be on target.
From Dennis Shapiro: Today, I received a check from Henry Gabbay. I hope this is a sign that other people will soon start sending in their money.
From Ira Mitzner: Why don't we ask everyone to contact at least one person who is not on the list and urge that person to come?
From Ellen Epstein Silver: Let us encourage our friends to sign up, and if we could combine our year with another, that would be a great help. I feel that once people starting getting enthusiastic about this and plan for a party weekend, it will all fall into place. I was really hoping that those who did not come to the last reunion would want to get on the bandwagon.
From Robin Feit Baker: While I was having lunch with Dennis today, a thought occurred to me. How do you feel about extending an invitation to other classes to join our reunion? Many of us had friends and siblings in these classes, so it might be worth some consideration. Perhaps doing this would alleviate our attendance problem and contribute to an even more successful reunion weekend.
Meanwhile, I also spoke to Joan Aries Cleven. She is going to begin making phone calls for that personal touch. Life is too short not to celebrate our milestones and accomplishments.
From Barbara Blitfield Pech: For business, I work with, and speak to, hundreds of people around the country each week, and many wait until the last minute before making the commitments needed. So do not hesitate to "motivate" people.
Speaking for myself, I can't believe the timing of the reunion: the same weekend my office staff will be in New York for market week, and I'm supposed to be home in Miami babysitting the business. Now that's a neat trick. But I've made it to all our earlier reunions, and I'll be at this one, too, even if I have to sneak out of town in the dark of night. I wouldn't miss this party for anything, anyone, or any reason!
From Allen Moss: People need to realize that being thousands of dollars short is something serious.
From Marilyn Horowitz Goldhammer: The idea of a raffle may be a realistic way to raise funds to cover the rest of the hotel cost. I’m sure we must have former classmates who have vacation homes; that would probably be appealing to a lot of people. Also, in hindsight, the only thing we might have done differently was ask people to send their money in before signing the contract.
From Larry Rugen: As you know, I've helped plan a number of Air Force reunions, and we always get the money first.
From Stu Kandel: I just filled my Jeep with gas, and the cost was $49, and that will last me four days. Surely, $100 to see old friends, along with dinner and drinks, doesn't seem unreasonable. I also think we put Dennis Shapiro in a very unenviable position, and we should all do something to help.
Finally, someone from another class asked: Would it be possible to open the Friday night party to people who aren't able to go on Saturday because of other conflicts? You could charge a small fee, say $25. I know you mentioned that the Friday party was a tiny part of the cost, because most of it was being comped by the hotel. But separating that party would mean that more people could come, and it might even make a little money toward the paying off your other expenses.

Update 4-12-05
Hi,
To start off with, some strange news: we may be having a problem with the reunion plans. The background.
Over the past month, I've heard that a number of people who came to the 37th reunion aren't planning to come to this one. I haven't asked why because I didn't want to put anyone on the spot.
Dennis Shapiro just let me know that the number of people planning to attend the 40th reunion has held, unchanged, at two dozen since mid-March.
Out of curiosity, I checked the 2002 Updates to see how many people were committed to the 37th reunion at this time in its planning. Fifty-six.
There are a number of possible reasons for this snarl:
People think it's still too early to set plans for early August.
We set the 100 buck price too high.
We picked the wrong time of year.
People don't really need another reunion so soon after the 37th.
Any of these might be valid, but they put us in kind of a hole. In October, when we were picking hotels and dates, we did a quick survey of interest and got over 50 responses within a week. That seemed solid as we figured we'd pick up at least another 50 people along the way, since there were 120 at the 37th reunion.
On that basis, we signed a contract. If we had to cancel today, we'd still owe 80% of the money -- $6000. If we wait another three weeks, we'll owe 90% -- $6750. And since we've only raised $2400 so far, we'd have to raise at least $3600 just to cancel the party.
Solutions?
Cost cutting. But Dennis Shapiro says we're locked into a contract with the hotel. And that contract doesn't even include the nicety of comping the teachers, which was expected to cost another $1000, or the DJ's fee, which was projected at $500. These extras were going to be funded by having more than 75 people come to the party. So even if we cut those extras now, we don't reduce the amount we owe the hotel.
Canceling the Friday night party. But that was being almost entirely comped by the hotel. Since it was a cash bar, we only had to pay the bartender's fee -- cheap -- 80 bucks. Plus petty cash for snacks.
Fund Raising. Donald Faber already suggested this, and we may have to come up with some packages people would buy raffle tickets for. Kind of a big bake sale.
Making Bill Gates an honorary member of the class of '65. Probably not a real solution.
So that's the situation. We've just dropped Dennis into the boiling water, and it's gonna cost another three-and-a-half grand to fish him out. The way he and Paul DeMartino figure it, we need another 51 people to commit to the reunion, soon, or we drop Paul in the vat, too. And these are nice guys.
So let us know if we did something wrong, or if people just haven't been feeling the urgency to solidify their August plans. Or if you have any other solutions. Thanks.

In response to my note last week to Liz King Giordano, Principal Stephen Lando's secretary at South, she wrote: I'm pleased to inform you that our Senior High Awards Assembly will take place on Wednesday, June 8, 2005, at 7:30 PM, and the committee is in the process of selecting the recipients for The Vince Tampio Memorial Scholarship and The Booker Gibson Music Award. I’ll have the winners for you next week.
We welcome your choice of presenters for the formal announcement and presentation that evening. I’m sure Booker Gibson would love to come back to present. He almost played for our tsunami benefit concert, but his aunt passed away, and he had to attend a funeral out-of-town. One of our teachers on a leave of absence was staying in a village in Sri Lanka and survived the tsunami. The school raised over $15,000, and she just returned there to help them rebuild. We have an awesome group of faculty members here at South.
Also, Booker Gibson wrote: I may have mentioned this before, but Linda Tobin Kettering '70 (Forest Road) has gladly offered to come to South on June 8th and introduce me. She's the PSTA president of Forest Road and is on a relaxed basis with the South administration. She just wants some information, like the criteria.
And Lynn Nudleman Villagran wrote: There are actually many services available to help older people live at home independently as long as possible. There are Area Agencies on Aging (AAA) in each county that can refer people to services in their communities for their elders and for caregiver support and services as well. AAA's can be found by using the Eldercare Locater at: http://www.eldercare.gov/ Also, http://www.caregiver.org/ has lots of good information for families.
And Larry Rugen wrote: It is hard to know what to do, but you know you parent(s) and family best, and usually you really know what needs to be said or done. That said, it is so difficult to break that bond of independence -- many parents feel "you have some nerve" -- but if there are physical or mental problems, then better they feel that way than to hurt themselves or others.

Update 4-5-05
All right,
A light week for mail, lost, as we are, in a holiday limbo between Easter and an unusually late Passover. And there have been deaths, internationally, and distractions. So, first, a little inter-class news, then some reflection. Finally, the growing party-goers list and repeating reunion information.
From Linda Cohen Greenseid: I don't know if Jerry Bittman is aware of this, but when I was browsing this month's PBS TV magazine (channel 13 in New York), I noticed that his cousin, Mark, author of How To Cook Everything, will be featured on a Sunday series beginning April 17th at 4:30 PM. The blurb says he "goes one-on-one with some of the country's most talented chefs."
Next, from Steve Cahn, Class of '70: The new Class of '70 web site is up, and it can be viewed at: www.geocities.com/vssouth70 Ninety-six classmates are now participating, but we still have 216 more to locate.

[Rich -- more from me, some slight reflection: I was just east for my niece's bat mitzvah, and for the first time, in a group of almost two hundred people, all family and friends, I was practically the oldest one there.
I'm the oldest of four kids and of eight first cousins. Some of our parents are still alive, but they're getting to the age where they don't get out much anymore, which is why they mainly skipped this occasion. And they're at the age where my sister, brothers, cousins, and I aren't quite sure what to do with them. Love 'em, yeah. Support 'em emotionally and let them have their independence, of course. But the image of that sweet man in Santa Monica, who lived an ideal live, then accidentally plowed into a Farmer's Market at 88, killing, I think, 10 people keeps coming back.
At one point I said to one of my cousins that I thought our parents did a better job of helping their aging parents than we seem to be doing with ours. Maybe because our parents are older, and our shared world more technologically complex. Maybe because so many of us have moved some distance from our parents, or they've moved so far from us. Maybe because our generation seems more focused on its kids than our parents were on us: we were allowed to run free; kids today call their parents hourly, when not being shepherded to organized events. Then I thought more specifically about my family, and I realized that not only did my parents not do a better job of helping their parents in their final years, but their parents didn't do any better with my great-grandparents.
So maybe it's just a matter of -- one more time -- trying hard, doing our best, and hoping for a little luck. The men in my family seem to take that luck simply by dying in their 70s, but the women go on forever. So they're the ones I'm worried about.]

[Rich -- more from me, some slight reflection: I was just east for my niece's bat mitzvah, and for the first time, in a group of almost two hundred people, all family and friends, I was practically the oldest one there.
I'm the oldest of four kids and of eight first cousins. Some of our parents are still alive, but they're getting to the age where they don't get out much anymore, which is why they mainly skipped this occasion. And they're at the age where my sister, brothers, cousins, and I aren't quite sure what to do with them. Love 'em, yeah. Support 'em emotionally and let them have their independence, of course. But the image of that sweet man in Santa Monica, who lived an ideal live, then accidentally plowed into a Farmer's Market at 88, killing, I think, 10 people keeps coming back.
At one point I said to one of my cousins that I thought our parents did a better job of helping their aging parents than we seem to be doing with ours. Maybe because our parents are older, and our shared world more technologically complex. Maybe because so many of us have moved some distance from our parents, or they've moved so far from us. Maybe because our generation seems more focused on its kids than our parents were on us: we were allowed to run free; kids today call their parents hourly, when not being shepherded to organized events. Then I thought more specifically about my family, and I realized that not only did my parents not do a better job of helping their parents in their final years, but their parents didn't do any better with my great-grandparents.
So maybe it's just a matter of -- one more time -- trying hard, doing our best, and hoping for a little luck. The men in my family seem to take that luck simply by dying in their 70s, but the women go on forever. So they're the ones I'm worried about.]

Just got home from four busy days away, and I'm a little dazed. So the mail, in the order it came:
From Zelda White Nichols: What a nice surprise -- I received an e-mail the other day from Alan Bendel, along with his phone number. It turns out that my husband and I moved to within an hour's drive of Alan, and he recognized our location from my e-mail address. We had a lot of fun filling each other in on the last 40 years -- it can't possibly be that long, can it? -- and we hope to get together, along with our spouses, for a visit in the next few weeks.
From Barbara Blitfield Pech: This past weekend, March 19th, my son Evan officially took himself off the market and married his best girl and middle school sweetheart Jessica Zelman. It was a lovely wedding made even better by sharing the festivities with my best friends, Robin Feit Baker and Carol Ewig Duran, who came in from Chicago and New York (regrets were sent from Ellen Epstein Silver). I am sure that many of us have been down the aisle with at least one child by now, but as a first timer and a single parent of an only child, wow, this is something that can't be explained. The emotions just kind of take hold and don't let go. But the joy, reassurance, and comfort of looking out into the guest group and seeing my two best, lifelong friends sharing day with me just added to who we are, and what we are to each other. If I haven't already said "Thank you" 1965 times to you and us, please allow me this one more time.

From Jerry Bittman: I just got back to Nebraska after spending 15 days in Florida. It was a great, great vacation, but then getting out of Nebraska to go anywhere would be considered a great vacation.
Really, though, everything went perfectly, and so many good things happened to me while in Florida. While playing poker in an Indian casino, I was offered a job by a man who owns a dealing school -- no, not drugs -- dealing all the casino games. I was seriously contemplating accepting the position when something else developed. I am going into business with two of my friends -- it is related to poker, and it was my brainstorm. I will be heading to Nevada and California in June to call on all the casinos in Nevada and the poker rooms in California. The item is currently being manufactured in Florida, and the prototype will be completed in approximately 6 to 8 weeks. Besides this item, we are also producing two completely different items. One of those, we have was sent to my partners' business connection in Thailand to manufacture. That should also be ready in about two months. I am so excited about these ventures, and I can't wait to see South High alumni in California.
I also got to see four Mets games while in Florida. For the first two games, our seats were in the front row, next to the Mets' bullpen. We talked to the players the whole time and received quite a bit of inside information. Jason Phillips, the Mets reserve catcher, was especially great, and Friday night, we talked for all nine innings. Unfortunately, two days later, he was traded to the Dodgers, and one of the relief pitchers on Sunday kidded me by saying that none of the other players would talk to me -- they were afraid that if they did, they would also be traded.
The people in Florida were great, and I won quite a bit of money playing poker, so that paid for my trip. However, the real highlight of my vacation was seeing Barney Zinger and his beautiful wife Helen. I must admit that Barney got the best of that deal. After going out to dinner, we went back to Barney's house and sat on the patio reminiscing. Before we knew it, six hours had elapsed, and it was 2:00 AM. Zing, thank you for a great time, buddy, and I can't wait till next year so we can visit again and also go to your gym.

Also, from Jean Cohen Oklan: My husband and I will be driving to New York City for a gig that my son, Ezra, is having on Saturday, March 26th, at 9:30 PM at Don Hill's TISWAS, 511 Greenwich Street, on the corner of Spring Street. National Public Radio is going to be there, videotaping the band for a show pilot to possibly air April 15th on Showtime. The NPR camera crew spent all day yesterday in Burlington, Vermont, interviewing and getting to know the guys in the band.
If you can make it to Don Hill's (and I hope you can), mention at the door that you are there to hear GOP (Ghosts of Pasha). And realize that you will be supporting a group of guys who went to school for performance, and who have had this dream ever since they can remember.
They sound great, albeit loud. These days, gigs at rock clubs in New York City only last about an hour, so you'll only need your earplugs in for a short time! Please come out and support the band. I'd love to see you there!
A slight correction from Jean: I mentioned that my son's gig is being filmed for a show pilot, but I didn't mean to make it sound like a reality show. It's not, in the sense that my son's band will not be competing with any other bands. This show will profile American lives, and it's a pilot for a spinoff of the popular (and terrific) NPR program called "This American Life" with Ira Glass. Calling it a "reality show" doesn't do it justice!
From Peter Rosen: Still love these Tuesday mornings sitting with a cup of coffee, reading the updates. Do you think the time has come to start listing the names of those who have said "yes" so far for the reunion? It might spur others on. Can't wait to see you and everyone else.

A tax note: Someone recently asked if I could send a note confirming a donation to the Vince Tampio scholarship fund. Of course, I can, and I'm sorry I didn't think of it sooner -- that's why I never became an accountant. I can also send notes confirming Booker Gibson scholarship contributions. Just ask. Unfortunately, going to the reunion isn't tax deductible, except it you're doing it for a science project.
From a little bit of accidental research: Ricky -- that would probably be Rick now -- Blumenthal was in the class of '70.
Finally, a story I've just been reminded about: When I was in my early forties, I lost a filling in one of my molars. I was nowhere near home, so had to use a dentist I got on recommendation. His receptionist was great about working me into their busy schedule, and as I sat in the dentist's chair, I was asked what kind of pain killer I usually used: "Gas? Novocain? Is there anything you're allergic to?"
"Pain killer?" I asked. "It's just a filling."
"But we always use pain killers," the hygienist told me.
"Why? I've never had them. I've just sort of gripped the hand rests and signaled to the dentist when it was getting too much."
"You're kidding," the dentist put in. "How long has this been going on?"
"All my life. I've only ever had one dentist. He just retired."
"And a good thing, too," he laughed.

Update 3-15-05
Hey,
Business math: You have three deadlines. The first is for $750 in October. The second is for $1000 in February. The third is for $7250 in mid-June. You have 24 reservations, each for $100. It's March. How many more reservations will you need to make the June 15th deadline?
No immediate need to answer. No prizes given for the fastest reply. And I know that people need to get closer to August to finalize their plans. But soon after Easter, Dennis Shapiro will start sending me the list of people planning to attend the reunion, so we'll start some kind of formal countdown. Meanwhile, you've got Dennis perched on a swing over a vat of boiling water. It all depends how long you want to keep him there.
Speaking of money: as I said last year, I'm holding a bit more of other people's money for the Booker Gibson/Vince Tampio scholarships than I'm comfortable with. The scholarship in Vince's name is mainly supported by people who've promised to donate annually. The one in Booker's name is mainly supported by cumulative contributions. But I'm holding $600 in Tampio scholarship money and $1000 in Gibson scholarship money, and I'm going to use that toward this year's scholarships rather than hit people for more. So if you were planning to add to the donations this year, or to fulfill your annual pledge, please hold off. I'll let you know next year when more is needed. Thanks.

Selected works by Mary Sipp-Green are at the Springfield Museum Of Fine Arts in Springfield, Massachusetts under the title "Landscapes." The paintings are all in private collections and were done between 1990 and 2004. The exhibit opened on January 26th and will only run through April 2nd. Some comments from Heather R. Haskell, the museum director: "Several years ago, I was introduced to the luminous landscape paintings of Mary Sipp-Green, an artist living and working in the Berkshire Hills. Wanting to share her work with my colleagues, I projected the slides of her paintings on a screen. Gasps, followed by 'wow' and 'beautiful' echoed through the room. There was then silence as everyone contemplated the scenes before participating in an enthusiastic discussion on how the landscapes masterfully evoked emotion as well as a sense of familiarity."
From Robert Fiveson: A new review of my old film The Clonus Horror has appeared. An excerpt: Though it has suffered the ignominy of being lampooned on Mystery Science Theatre 3000 Clonus really isn't that bad, benefiting from a strong central idea that has become more rather than less relevant thanks to advances in genetics and cloning over the past quarter century and the ethical, philosophical and legal debates they give rise to. Admittedly, the story is ridden with inconsistencies... but, equally, it is no more so than the norm for low-budget science fiction... or, for that matter, many a mainstream Hollywood entry... Overall... while no classic, [the film] contains the germ of a good idea later to be exploited by the likes of the overrated The Truman Show. Mondo Macabro's Region 0 NTSC disc looks and sounds good for a film of Clonus's vintage and low budget -- $270,000 for a 35mm feature -- origins... The extras package is where things really shine, however. The centerpiece is an honest and entertaining commentary from director Robert Fiveson and Mondo Macabro's Pete Tombs that gives a lot of insight into the process of making a film of this sort -- scouting locations; stealing shots; getting things for free or cheap, dealing with actors and problem scenes etc. -- as does the interview featurette with Fiveson, which also goes into more detail on his background and how he got into the film business. Business math: You have three deadlines. The first is for $750 in October. The second is for $1000 in February. The third is for $7250 in mid-June. You have 24 reservations, each for $100. It's March. How many more reservations will you need to make the June 15th deadline?
No immediate need to answer. No prizes given for the fastest reply. And I know that people need to get closer to August to finalize their plans. But soon after Easter, Dennis Shapiro will start sending me the list of people planning to attend the reunion, so we'll start some kind of formal countdown. Meanwhile, you've got Dennis perched on a swing over a vat of boiling water. It all depends how long you want to keep him there.
Speaking of money: as I said last year, I'm holding a bit more of other people's money for the Booker Gibson/Vince Tampio scholarships than I'm comfortable with. The scholarship in Vince's name is mainly supported by people who've promised to donate annually. The one in Booker's name is mainly supported by cumulative contributions. But I'm holding $600 in Tampio scholarship money and $1000 in Gibson scholarship money, and I'm going to use that toward this year's scholarships rather than hit people for more. So if you were planning to add to the donations this year, or to fulfill your annual pledge, please hold off. I'll let you know next year when more is needed. Thanks.

As I've been promising, my updated crib sheet for South addresses.
The e-mail addresses have been receiving the newsletter every week.
The ones with the notation (no longer responding) may still be valid e-mail addresses, but the updates bounce back each week as undeliverable. So the addresses may be blocked to me, or blocked by a spam filter, or just no longer in existence.
The ones marked PHONE mean the people don't use e-mail, but can be contacted by phone, and I either have the number or know some way to get it.
The ones marked c/o Someone Else's Name mean the second person is the contact person for the first one and can usually be reached by e-mail.
The ones with a name and no other notes mainly mean that during the great alumni hunt of 2001, Paul DeMartino was able to able to talk to that person's answering machine or talk with someone who knew that person was still alive, but was never actually able to get a response from that person.
The ones marked c/o CLASSMATES.COM mean that person is currently listed on Classmates.com, but hasn't responded when I've sent them blind e-mail. Of course, Ken Seelig is still listed on Classmates.com, though I've tried politely pointing out to their webmaster that, unfortunately, Ken died almost four years ago. But Classmates doesn't seem to care about that, as evidentially, their success rests on numbers. The ones marked no longer on CLASSMATES.COM means they once were listed on that website, but that doesn't mean they're no longer with us. It just means they've, somehow, managed to get themselves unlisted from that spider's web.
The one marked WANTS NO CONTACT is just that. There are other folks who also don't seem to be interested, but they didn't say it quite so bluntly.
These are mainly former Class of '65 students, but there are some teachers and some guests who contribute regularly to the newsletter. In most cases, I've just noted last names in 1965. I've added first names when people share the same last name.

The ones marked c/o Someone Else's Name mean the second person is the contact person for the first one and can usually be reached by e-mail.
The ones with a name and no other notes mainly mean that during the great alumni hunt of 2001, Paul DeMartino was able to able to talk to that person's answering machine or talk with someone who knew that person was still alive, but was never actually able to get a response from that person.
The ones marked c/o CLASSMATES.COM mean that person is currently listed on Classmates.com, but hasn't responded when I've sent them blind e-mail. Of course, Ken Seelig is still listed on Classmates.com, though I've tried politely pointing out to their webmaster that, unfortunately, Ken died almost four years ago. But Classmates doesn't seem to care about that, as evidentially, their success rests on numbers. The ones marked no longer on CLASSMATES.COM means they once were listed on that website, but that doesn't mean they're no longer with us. It just means they've, somehow, managed to get themselves unlisted from that spider's web.
The one marked WANTS NO CONTACT is just that. There are other folks who also don't seem to be interested, but they didn't say it quite so bluntly.
These are mainly former Class of '65 students, but there are some teachers and some guests who contribute regularly to the newsletter. In most cases, I've just noted last names in 1965. I've added first names when people share the same last name.
