Update 9-2-03

Hi,

I guess if you start with the sad stuff, you can end with lighter things.  Unfortunately, both Danny Stellabotte's mother and Peter Rosen's dad died this past week.  If you'd like to write to Danny, his address is:  DStellabotte@cpiaero.com.  And if you want to write Peter, his address is:  PFRosen@aol.com.  On behalf of us all, our condolences.

Some letters:

From Peggy Cooper Schwartz:  as we bid farewell to the Summer of 2003, I hope everyone had a good Labor Day weekend.  Of course, it's always summer down here in beautiful Juno Beach, Florida.  Last week, my husband Les and I had a lovely dinner  with Marsha (Churnin) and Neal Soroka.  We met at Legal Seafood in West Palm Beach, and the husbands were only too kind to allow Marsha and me to talk endlessly about old times in the "Hood" AKA Green Acres.  Meanwhile, they compared Navy experiences.  By the way, Barbara Blitfield Pech mentioned Mr. Schmidt's Social Studies class.  Remember, it was called C.E. -- for Citizenship Education!  Best Regards to all.

From Zelda White Nichols:  this is for Barbara Blitfield Pech -- Hi Barbara, I do the same job you do, but for a data storage equipment manufacturer (computer hardware to the same heather-tiffany-bambi set) -- only out here we call it Business Development.  "Out here" is sunny Sun Diego, land of the surfer dude.  People come to work with their swim trunks on under their shorts, and surfboards ride the backs of pickup trucks instead of skis on top of SUVs.  I sell nationally as well, and for ten years networked at local chamber of commerce events when I lived in Massachusetts.  It only comes naturally now to extend this offer.  If you want to e-mail me privately Barbara at:  zelda.nichols@cox.net and let me know what you need, I will be happy to do some research for you out here regarding businesses to call on.  Let me know who you call on (shops, manufacturers, etc.) and I may be able to get some information to you.  It's always an adventure, isn't it?
Also, on a different subject, my past is coming back to haunt me.  My husband Dave and I will be celebrating our 33rd anniversary next month.  We met in New London in the early 70s, when he was stationed in the Navy there, and I had just moved from Boston.  We had many dinners at the original Lighthouse Inn.  The original burned down a number of years ago and was rebuilt, and I'm amazed that it's both continued to flourish and that it had such an esteemed guest list.  It's not exactly a tourist destination, although Mystic, a few miles up the road, is.

From Allen Moss:  Hope all has been well with you.  All is well here, and work and article writing continues.  An article I wrote on my safari has been accepted for publication by the African Wildlife Foundation in Washington, D.C.  It is going into their fall newsletter and on-line as well.
Heading for Iowa in two weeks to pick up a new beagle pup.  My two-year mourning period was necessary for sure, but I feel fine about being a doggy "papa" again.  Best regards.

From Irene Saunders Goldstein:  I had a terrific lunch yesterday with Robert Fiveson, and I was sorry to hear that I missed joining you both.  Actually, I was en route home from visiting my mother in Florida at that time.
Please note my new contact information:  2975 South Columbus Street,
Arlington, Virginia  22206.  Phone:  703-933-0011.  My e-mail stays the same.  Best to all.

[Yes, as the last update mentioned, I've been traveling.  I had a good lunch with Robert, and Peter Rosen was supposed to join us, but obviously couldn't because of his father's death.  It would have been nice to see Irene, but I only got her message after I got home.  Also, I was sandwiching other friends and relatives between a wedding and a bar mitzvah, and while it was all fun, and I did manage to squeeze in Naomi Stein, I got home, yesterday, a little shell-shocked.]
From the Classmates.com website, I got this message recently:  "Greg Weiss picked up your Classmates e-mail at 4:13 PM Pacific Daylight Time on 08/27/03."  That means Greg at least knows of our existence, so may go to the home page, find some of your e-mail addresses, and write you.  Still, I haven't directly heard from him, so I have no other news to relate.  The way the Classmates site works is it tells me when someone I've written has received my blind e-mail, but it doesn't tell me if it was read or simply deleted.  We'll just have to see what happens next.

Finally,  Take the following test to see if you are losing it.

1.  What do you put in a toaster?

The answer is "bread."  If you said "toast," then give up now.

2.  Say "silk" five times.  Now spell "silk."  Now what do cows drink?

Cows drink water.  If you said "milk," your brain is obviously over-
                       stressed.

3.  If a red house is made from red bricks, a blue house is made from blue bricks, a pink house is made from pink bricks, and a black house is made from black bricks, what is a greenhouse made from?

Glass.  If you said "green bricks," you may be in trouble.

4.  If the hour hand on a clock moves 1/60 of a degree every minute, then how many degrees will the hour hand move in one hour?

One degree.  If you said "360 degrees," congratulations for
remembering something about circles.  But that's not the answer.

5.  Without using a calculator:  you're driving a bus from London to Milford Haven in Wales.  In London, 17 people get on the bus.  In Reading, 6 people get off, and 9 people get on.  In Swindon, 2 people get off, and 4 get on.  In Cardiff, 11 people get off, and 16 get on.  In Swansea, 3 people get off, and 5 get on.  In Carmathen, 6 people get off, and 3 get on.  You then arrive at Milford Haven.  What is the name of the bus driver?

Answer:  Oh, for Christ's sake.  It's you!
