Update 12-13-05
Hey,
Couple of easy things and a batch of alumni association news. Easy stuff first.
From Roz Minsky Bobrow: I have a new e-mail address, a new phone number, and a new home address. In order: rozbobrow@yahoo.com 860-231-7430. 30 Ironwood Road, West Hartford, Connecticut, 06117. Thanks.
From someone named Alex in the class of '69: If you are close to Lynbrook, stop in and have a great dinner at the Broadway Beanery at 23 Atlantic Avenue. Their phone number is: 516-596-0028. This is not a paid ad. I picked up my own check. But the restaurant is too good not to mention to other South High School folks.
The details: I just popped in to get a quick meal and discovered that Patty Robinson was one of the owners. She graduated from South in 1970, with my sister and cousin, but she looked the same as in her yearbook picture. (I don't forget faces.) The food was great. Prices average about $20.00 for pasta entrees and up towards $30.00 for the best steaks. We passed up dessert due to the late hour, but it all looked sinfully good.
From Barbara Blitfield Pech: Somehow, after hearing the New York cold update early today as I padded out to the car in a business tank top, capris, and sandals, I cannot even imagine the words snow, esthetic, and value being in the same sentence. I shudder just from memory alone. Brrrr! By the way, did your note from the alumni association arrive with an application as an attachment? Robin Feit's note didn't seem to have it, and she hasn't been able to forward it to me. Perhaps you can add it to the next update so we can all join. It sounds really neat!
I may also go to the South's fiftieth anniversary party in March, assuming it has stopped snowing there by then. Gee, I never realized how much I am frio-challenged -- is that politically correct enough for how much I hate, detest, abhor, loathe, and mucho dislikeo being cold? Nothing like the ever-present, quick memory of frozen toes, snow in the face, and sleet blasting through my scarf, flash freezing my ears while I crossed the bridge to South to bring it all back at ya. Not my fondest March memory. Yowzer and brrrr again.
[Rich -- Alumni application below, with other related news.]
And to begin the alumni association news, a quick note from Emily Kleinman Schreiber: Hello. Every day I receive new e-mail addresses to add to my South alumni group list. It's fantastic! Many of you have already received the membership application, and some people are getting it now for the first time. Please take a few minutes to fill out the form, write your fifteen dollar check, and send it off to our treasurer. In order to fulfill our mission and give scholarships, we will need money in the treasury.
We have over ten thousand South graduates to draw from. Central High has more and their annual alumni dues are higher, but they've give out thirty thousand dollars in scholarships. Wouldn't it be great to match them?
So please join our group and pass the following form on to other alumni. And ask them to send me their e-mail addresses. Thanks.
Also, Robbie Brill Birnel, our new secretary, has done an excellent job writing the minutes of the November 30th meeting. Do take a look.
From Roberta Brill Birnel: Minutes -- November 30, 2005.
Tonight was the first meeting of the Valley Stream South High School Alumni Association. It was first incorporated on June 13, 1995. There were twenty-three people attending, and President Emily Kleinman Schreiber expressed the excitement and enthusiasm for everyone present.
The meeting came to order at 7:15 PM in the library at South High School. All present introduced themselves. Emily first discussed the progress made in establishing the association: confirmation that we were incorporated; the need for tax-exempt status; and a seal. We will, at subsequent meetings, decide upon bylaws, a statement of mission, establishment of scholarships, and committees. Some of the suggested purposes of our group are: aid to the high school, scholarships for seniors, encouragement of fellowship with other associations, and support among alumni membership. There was a suggestion to keep our statement of purpose open-ended for the time being.
Officers were selected (volunteered) as follows: President: Emily Kleinman Schreiber '61. Vice-President: Paul DeMartino '65. Treasurer: Dennis Shapiro '65. Secretary: Roberta Brill Birnel '62. Historian: Eileen Howell '64.
Also in attendance at this first meeting, in order of their graduation year, were: John Cunnane '61; Raymond Richford '61; Barbara (BJ) Peres Napolitano '62; Claire Brush Reinhardt '62; Karen Grimm '64; Edie Mandel '64; Ken Ulric '64; Laura Waxman Ulric '64; Linda Tobin Kettering '69; Steve Cahn '70; Cathy Rothowitz Effie Xenos '75; LuAnn Pollio McCann '79; Elaina Riccio-Garces '93; Mary Ann Riccio '98; Nell Landman, present teacher; Madeline Silverman, present teacher; and Bernie O'Brien, former teacher.
[Rich -- There is an attachment version of the following alumni association membership application form, but I don't want to start sending attachments or photos with this newsletter as they tend to get caught in spam filters. Besides, the application form is simple enough that you can copy, paste, fill out, then print this one. Still, if you really want the attachment version, as I mentioned last week, please write to Emily at: cre8em@aol.com Thanks.]

[Rich -- And that's it for this week. We're obviously heading into the holidays, which is a slow news time for everyone, so don't expect a lot of action here. Some filler, some letters from around the world, and some more filler. And maybe some news of the January Florida party. Meanwhile, I hope you all enjoy yourselves. And drink carefully.]
