Update 1-31-12

Hi,

If a picture is worth a thousand words, and a video counts more, this is a very long newsletter.  And it's almost all in web sites, tempting so many spam filters.  Still, I think they're all disabled.  Just remember to delete the spaces before you try the links.

First, a couple about Hy Rosov, one I think we've seen before.

From Barbara Blitfield Pech:  The art of Chaim Rosov -- chai-art . com
Mr. Rosov was the principal of the Hebrew school at Temple Gates of Zion -- my family congregation -- while he maintained his own membership at Congregation Tree of Life.  His Judaic artwork became his career after teaching.  He was not only a gifted artist but also world-known, and his pieces are in national museums.

And from Joanne Shapiro Polner:  Mr. Rosov in the Library of Congress --

SIDUR.  Prayer book, youth services, edited by Hiram Rosov, Valley Stream, New York, Congregation Tree of Life.  32 pages.  Hebrew or English: title transliterated.  Copyright 1965.
Joanne notes:  the downloadable document is a scan and not very clear.

Next, kind of obscene and not at all about Hy Rosov, from Eric Hilton.  He explains:  this is a very funny video by a Valley Stream stand-up comic, which represents the attitude of the South Shore youth today.  When I watch it, many of the things they say sound exactly like my daughter and her friend in Valley Stream.

Next, not obscene but food-related, again, from Barbara Blitfield Pech:
Last week, I mentioned that the online Vermont Country Store carries a taste-alike Sunshine Bakers Raisin Bar cookie called "Garibaldi Biscuits."  Then I discovered they sell for the astounding price of six packets for $18.00.  Today, I found Khong Guan brand Sultana Biscuits, which are exactly the same as Sunshine brand, but list for .99.

Finally, nostalgia-related:  Gene Barkin, South class of '66, playing with the Tacoma, Washington-based band, The Careless Hunters:  youtube . com/watch?v=I8ghP7qU030&feature
Here's a note about Gene from the band's website:  Gene Barkin -- guitar, vocals.  Gene has worked as a recording artist for various labels in Los Angeles -- Columbia Records, United Artists, and RCA, among them.  In addition to recording numerous albums, Gene toured the world with a few bands, notably The Grass Roots, and with Australian pop-rock star Russell Morris.  He was a finalist in the World Popular Song Festival, where he performed at the famed Tokyo Budokan.
Here's the band's web site link:  carelesshunters . com
Here's a comment about the band from their web site:  Top 5 Ways To Remember Our Band's Name:
It rhymes with Dareless Bunters, Airless Punters, and Hairless Shunters
Without the "e" we are The Car Less Hunters
Mumble the name over and over at work and wait for Human Resources to come have a talk with you
Visit our web site and Facebook page often
Come to a show and let the music speak for itself
    Here's their Facebook link:  facebook . com/pages/The-Careless-Hunters/258812360152
There are several of the band's songs available online.

[Rich -- The last information came by way of Judy Hartstone.  Since she moved back to California, we've been trying to have lunch quarterly, and when I saw her last Saturday, I asked if she'd known Gene Barkin on Bainbridge Island.  Recently, his name and "Bainbridge Island" turned up on my Facebook list of possible friends.  Judy said she hadn't known Gene but said the island population was small enough that, after all the time she lived there, she certainly could have.  So she did some research, which led to all those links.]

Finally, a hopeful piece of news from Evelyn Roedel Read, class of '59:  Just an update about my health.  The Memorial Sloan Kettering doctor told me that my stage four lung cancer was not curable but that mild chemotherapy might give me a little more time.  This was after viewing my October 2011 CT, where "six or seven new cancerous tumors were found in the right lobes."  That was up from two seen in June and only one a year ago December.
Instead of simply giving in, on November 22nd, I began a non-FDA-approved treatment that has been used with success in Europe for at least fifty years.  The FDA won't even allow testing here, supposedly because of money and drug company lobbies.  I am now going three times weekly, for triple treatments each visit.  My January 11th, 2012, CT showed no new tumors, a positive sign, and the six or seven existing tumors appeared larger on the CT, but just before they die, they flatten out and may just appear larger with no extra volume.
My next CT is scheduled for April, and I hope I have positive news to report.  I am certainly thinking positive!  I have many friends and family members praying for me, so I certainly don't want to let anybody down.  LOL!
