Update 8-24-10
Hi,
Some notes and some links from some folks.
From Irene Saunders Goldstein: I was delighted to spend a bit of time with Peter Rosen and meet his lovely wife, Phyllis, last week in Atlanta. What fun! There's nothing like deepening old friendships over a refreshing beverage and plates of good food!
And from Peter Rosen: My wife Phyllis and I had a chance to have dinner with Irene Saunders Goldstein when she was in Atlanta last week. She did an artful job of explaining to Phyllis how unique our class is. I also was able to meet up with Andrea Schwartz Neenan yesterday for a bite and good conversation. She was in Atlanta visiting her daughter and granddaughter. A note to everyone: If you come to Atlanta, I will make sure to see you. Life’s too short not to make the effort.
From Jean Cohen Oklan: Hi, all. We apologize for your receiving an e-mail associated with a scam titled "On A Trip." We had no control over this and have had our computer compromised because of it. "Spam" it if you haven't already!
From Eric Hilton: I just looked at the 45th reunion photos online and am truly sorry I wasn’t able to make the reunion last month, since we were on a cruise and in Key West. Everyone looks great.
Yesterday, I had a doctor's appointment down in Pt. Charlotte, Florida, and I was able to see Bea Brown -- who looked wonderful. Since she was working that day and didn't have a lot of time, we’re going to try to get together again soon, hopefully with Kathy Palmer, class of 66.
Also, my daughter will be giving birth to a little girl, on November 15th, so we will be up to New York afterwards and will try to get together with some of our South High friends at that time... if my daughter gives permission to get away. Meanwhile, regards to all.
From Mark Perlman: I was spending some time exploring on Classmates.com today, and the site has a copy of the South High class of 1984 yearbook posted. I was amazed to see, after 19 years, how many of our former teachers were still teaching there. I counted over 25. Unlike the jobs that I have had in the past 20 years that didn't last as long as I hoped that they would, it looks like once you get a gig at South High School, you don't leave.
From Bill Linkner: Small world isn't it? My son Greg told me of that conversation with Andrea Schwartz Neenan. Our older son, Bud, looked even more like me and has had numerous former South students ask if I was his father. Many of them remembered when my wife would dress up the four little blondies in red and white and bring them to the games and matches. Bud lives on Long Island, but now that I'm an old fart, we no longer look alike. Next time we get down to Greg's, I'll try to give Andrea a call.
Last time we were down, Joe Argenzio was not good. It was sad because he was always in super shape. Anyway, I look forward to receiving the reunion mail. It's really great to see classmates keep in touch for such a long period of time. Please let everyone know that they are all welcome to call us if they're ever on Hilton Head Island. We are the only Linkners on the island, so it's easy to find us. Our telephone number is: 843-686-4810. Rachael and Ira Mitzner were down last year, and we took them to a redneck pub. The only negative part came when Ira told me how old he was. Boy, did I ever feel old.
From Booker Gibson: Reading about the recent vandalism at South, I remembered the fire. I think you've already mentioned this before. I believe it was somewhere in the 1970s, on a Sunday morning, when a South High faculty member called me about a Saturday night fire. Before noon, I got to the school and stood on the Harbor Road side with many other faculty with tears in our eyes, staring at that entire side of the blackened building.
This caused classes to be totally shifted, probably for the rest of the term, and much time and money was wasted. The worst part, I believe, was on graduation day. I was there because I attended every graduation to assist the band director. In his speech, when the principal barely mentioned the fire, many of the grads stood up and cheered. Because of this, the principal nearly canceled the entire ceremony, but out of respect to parents, relatives, and more respectful graduates, the show went on. Maybe one of you can look up the exact year of the fire.
From Barbara Blitfield Pech: It's official... Today, I am a 13-year breast cancer survivor. Happy breast mitzvah.
[Rich -- Congratulation, Barbara. From all of us.]
From Ellen Sue Brody Pilger: Now that I've seen the photo of Bill, The Good Humor man, I'd like a chocolate
Fudgesicle with 2 sticks, please.
From Jeff Levin: My wife Liz and I have been in China for a month now. Our daughters Theresa and Courtney have been with us for over a week. We've had great experiences and adventures, and we've created a blog to share some of the pictures and our thoughts as we travel. Unfortunately, we've found that our Macintosh computers and China do not work well together. We did publish the blog about two weeks ago but have not been able to since. I'm enclosing a link to our blog so you can see the photos and read about some of our experiences.
At the top of the blog are the cities we visited and lots of pictures. There are also some videos, but I give no guarantee that they work. We've had a great trip, and making this blog was part of the fun, so we hope you enjoy it. http://web.me.com/lizlevin9/China_Chat/Blog/Blog.html
From Joanne Shapiro Polner: Caduceus. The journal for Emily's touching poem, for which we thank you, Emily. The word "caduceus" is the name of a symbol from ancient times. The symbol of what discipline, educated reader? Are you sure?
Everyone, enlarge your knowledge. Please look at: www.drblayney.com/Asclepius.html which offers histories of the symbol of Hermes, the symbol of Asclepius, and explains how the two evolving symbols have become confused in meaning, one with the other. Who were those men/gods? How does Moses fit in? What else comes to mind with the last picture on the site? First medicine? An apple a day...
