Update 3-15-11
Hi,
Let's start with a little class business: I just got the annual letter from South's principal, Maureen Henry. It reads:
I am pleased to inform you that our Senior High School Scholarship Awards presentation will take place on Wednesday, June 8, 2011 at 7:00 PM in South Hall. We would greatly appreciate your participation again this year in presenting The Vince Tampio Theater Award and The Booker Gibson Music Award and by making the formal announcement that evening.
The students at South continue to shine in their academic performances and service to both school and community. Your generous scholarship award allows us to recognize these students. Please confirm your participation by contacting our awards coordinator, Liz King-Giordano.
[Rich -- For those of you who may not know, we support two, annual, $500 scholarships at South, one honoring the still-lively Booker Gibson and the other honoring the late, but possibly also still active Vince Tampio. This will be the eighth year of our projected ten-year commitment, and we presently have $25 in the Booker Gibson fund and $100 in the Vince Tampio fund.
As I've written for the past several years, I never know what to expect when I ask for the annual donations. Some people initially committed to support the awards and have faithfully followed through, and other people graciously support when they can. We need $475 towards the scholarship in Booker's name this year and $400 towards the one in Vince's.
As before, please make your checks out to me, Rich Eisbrouch, and send them to: 23030 Dolorosa Street, Woodland Hills, California 91367. Please indicate in the bottom left corner of the check which scholarship you'd like to support, or if you'd like your money to be split between them. I'll keep everyone informed weekly about the growing totals and let you all know as soon as the goals have been reached.
Two years ago, we collected $850 from 24 people in 7 days. Last year, it took us 6 weeks to raise $907, and there were 22 contributors. For 7 years, we've managed to raise the money unobtrusively, and I've comfortably gotten the checks to Liz King Giordano at South by mid-May.]
In other notes:
From Betsy Fels Pottruck: Sherry's or Shurry's was across from Marvin's jewelry store, not Martin's. There also was Sisteen, right on Central Avenue. That was another store where my mom took me to shop. When I got older and was able to afford it, I shopped at Lee Brouse. The best salesperson there, with the most fabulous taste and style, was Bobbie Blumenthal, Peter's mom. She really used to help me look terrific. She is still alive and well and living in Boca Raton.
From Danny Stellabotte: In the last several updates, there have been references made to many stores in and around Valley Stream that we may have gone to. One store in Valley Stream that has not been mentioned was a clothing store named Zimmerman's. My mom took me there many times for school clothes. This store was located on Rockaway Avenue just north of Bohack's. I worked at Bohack's for some time with Carlo Lucarelli and John Higgins. Another name that I believe was not mentioned is Wetson's. This store was on Sunrise Highway, close to Lynbrook. One thing that stands out in my mind is that I used to go there with Eric Hilton, usually on a Friday night. Not good for me because at that time, Catholics could not eat meat on Fridays. So being the good boy I was, I had to watch Eric with envy. Eric, do you remember?
In reference to where Diane Fruzzetti lives, Barbara Blitfield Pech wrote: New Mexico... Arizona... Wherever!
[Rich -- I wrote Barbara that I hoped she was warm and well in Miami, Georgia.]
Barbara also included this note, from a Brooklyn blog: The best bakery was Allenby's -- a little hole in the wall, but the aromas early in the morning, when I was walking to school, were amazing! Shluker's takes a close second. That was where my dad bought me Charlotte Russe's every winter. I ate the whipped cream and cherry and gave my dad the cake part.
Barbara adds: The writer and I have since communicated. She grew up in Brooklyn and was as surprised as I was to know of the "other" Shluker's location. Did we know that Shluker's had a first location in Brooklyn and the Green Acres bakery was the suburban branch?
[Rich -- Yep, we've discussed both locations before. But I can't remember if we determined that Shluker's moved from Brooklyn to Valley Stream around the time many of us did, or if the two branches co-existed for a while.]
About a different store, but from someone who traces down and remembers these things, Joanne Shapiro Polner: Thanks to Sandy Holz and Mark Perlman, we have identified the correct spelling and position on Rockaway Avenue of a pharmacy that was still on there in 1965. Also, thank you, Janet Longmore, for the first clues. Those didn't pan out for Mark, but Sandy's version of the spelling enabled Mark to find the proper name: Christmann's Ethical Pharmacy. The address is also confirmed: 258 Rockaway Avenue.
On a related matter, Mark said he did not find DiMartino's in the 1965 phone book? Does anyone remember that?
To which Eric Hilton replied: What was DiMartino's?
[Rich -- Also, this week, three different people on the mailing list asked for e-mail address of three other different people, also on the mailing list. Once again, I'm gently going to remind everyone that you don't have to wait for me to get back to you with that information. The first link at the bottom of almost every newsletter will take you to all the South-related e-mail addresses we have available. I think there are over 200 of them, and Mary Ferranti Khan could probably give us the exact number since she graciously keeps that list updated far better than I ever did. The link is: reunionclass65.blogspot.com
By the way, the second link at the bottom of most newsletters is to hundreds of South photos that Stu Borman generously curates. That link is: picasaweb.google.com/SouthHS65]
And here's a new address for that list, Mary, from someone who temporarily vanished into cyberspace some years ago: Hello. Kindly add me to your newsletter subscription list. I take it this is Rich? If so, a warm hello from Marc Goldberg. My e-mail address is: zen2100@hotmail.com
Finally, from Paulinda Schimmel: I've started a non-profit organization, The Ovarian Cancer Circle / Inspired by Robin Babbini. It honors the memory of my daughter, Robin, who lost her life to ovarian cancer at age of 20.
Our first annual fundraiser is Dance to the Decades. It will be held on Sunday, March 20th, at the House of Blues in West Hollywood. We are being co-sponsored by the City of West Hollywood and the House of Blues. There will be music from the late '50s through the '80s, with complimentary food donated by Whole Foods, wine donated by Sebastiani, and an amazing silent auction.
Please come and bring your friends. It's going to be a fabulous event for a great cause. Tickets are $50.00 or a donation, which is tax deductible, and all proceeds will benefit ovarian cancer research. To contribute, please go to: www.theovariancancercircle.org
I'm looking forward to seeing some of you and hearing from some others. There's also a flyer for this event, and if you'd like a copy, please write me at: Paulindadi@aol.com. Thanks.
Once again, the South '65 e-mail addresses: reunionclass65.blogspot.com
