Update 1-11-10
Hi,
First, a reminder that there's a reunion coming up in Florida at the end of the month. The official RSVP deadline has passed, but for information, please contact Joan Kass Lipson at: jlipson@optonline.net.
Second: Uh, shouldn't we be thinking about our own reunion again?
Third, some notes about urban and suburban danger:
From Evelyn Roedel Read: Somehow, as I read your story, the theme song from "Dragnet" was sounding in my head, as I pictured Sergeant Friday and his sidekick looking at the evidence and gathering the facts.
From Zelda White Nichols: I don’t know which is worse – living in an area where 45s are shot off on New Year's or here on the lake, where there are a lot of hunters who like to shoot rifles instead of fireworks off their docks. My husband and I were in bed at midnight, watching the ball come down, and all of a sudden, it sounded like WW III outside. Fortunately, the shots were about a mile away, but sound carries over water, and it sounded much closer.
Also, thanks to Judy Hartstone and Barbara Blitfield Pech, for their kind words about my story.
From Larry Rugen: I suppose writers are used to these things, but for me, I want to get paid to be in a combat zone.
From Robert Fiveson: Many years ago in Los Angeles, I knew a really sweet Hispanic couple who cleaned my house. They were newlyweds. She was eventually pregnant, and he went out to bring back a new refrigerator in the back of his pick-up truck for their home. He was killed by a stray bullet, so these shots aren't always as benign as your story would indicate.
From Jay Berliner: Isn't this something we learned about in high school -- "Keep your head down."
From Barbara Blitfield Pech: In Miami, New Year's Eve, a six-year-old child, visiting from Italy and dining with his parents and family at an upscale, outdoor restaurant, was shot in the chest by a "fire into the sky" stay bullet. The mayor and city are picking up all hospital, emergency, medical, hotel, and extended stay costs while the child recovers in the pediatric intensive care unit.
From Ellen Sue Brody Pilger: Santa Barbara is quieter than Los Angeles, but it does have its share of crime. When my husband was out of town recently, and I was home alone, on a Saturday evening, the city set up a drunk driving checkpoint on the main street near our house. Reading quietly, I heard a car pull into our driveway and, not expecting anyone, opened the front door to have a look. Three very big, drunk men in their 30s were emptying their beer into their bellies and dumping the cans into our yard before having to cross the checkpoint.
And from my cousin, Larry Fein: The best advice I can give is what my wife, Muriel, gave me when I called her from Ndjamena, Chad, and told her there was a coup attempt going on, with small arms fire near my hotel: "Don't be curious!"
Finally, a reminder that there's an Alumni Association meeting this Thursday, January 14th, at 7:15 in the teacher's cafeteria at South. And, to entice you, highlights from the minutes from last October's meeting:
The following members were present: Roberta Brill Birnel, Booker T. Gibson, Karen Grimm, Terry Gunderson Kaiser, Arlene Ainbinder Lynn, Edie Mandel, Claire Brush Reinhardt, Ray Richford, Emily Kleinman Schreiber, Dennis Shapiro, Eric Spinner, and Irene Sundal.
President’s Report: South’s Homecoming on October 3rd was well attended by students. Unfortunately, not many alumni attended, but there were five from the honored class of 1959. Several new South alumni from the class of 2009 joined our reception in the library. Pictures were taken and will soon be posted on our web site.
Treasurer's Report: One new member joined at Homecoming.
Old Business: Arlene Ainbinder Lynn reported that there are now more than 100 South Alumni Association members on Facebook. If anyone else is interested in joining, log on to Facebook.com and search "Valley Stream South."
New Business: Members voted to donate $200 to the Food Pantry at Holy Name of Mary as an Act of Kindness.
Events: We discussed our next Booker Gibson Night at the Irish Coffee Pub in August. Some members thought we should have an evening together before then, and a tentative date of Wednesday, May 5, 2010 was suggested.
Please send any information regarding reunions to Eric Spinner at: eSpinne@schools.nyc.gov to be posted on our web site and to Emily at cre8em@aol.com for inclusion in the Alumni Association’s Bulletin.
Meetings for Next Year: January 14, February 11, March 11, April 8, May 13, and June 10.
