Update 5-11-10
Hi,
Something curious to start with: I just got the following e-mail twice -- to the class address and to my personal one. It was signed by a classmate and sent from the e-mail address associated with that classmate:
I'm sorry for this odd request because it might get to you too urgent but it's because of the situation of things right now,I'm stuck in London UK with family right now,we came down here on vacation ,we were robbed, worse of it was that our bags, cash ,credit cards and cell phone were stolen at GUN POINT, It's such a crazy experience for us, we need help flying back home, the authorities are not being 100% supportive but the good thing is that we still have our passport but don't have enough money to get our flight ticket back home, please i need you to loan me some money, i will refund you as soon as I'm back home, i promise.
Obviously, it's not from the classmate, and it's a scam. But it's the first one of this sort I've gotten, and it goes along with the urgent phone calls people seem to be getting from their grandchildren:
I don't want Mom or Dad to find out about this, but I just got picked up for a speeding ticket, and I need 500 bucks immediately. The cops'll take a credit card.
These calls seem to depend on the fact that all teenaged voices sound alike, so the grandparents won't be surprised by the voice, and the callers have taken the time to find out the name of the grandchildren they're pretending to be. In any case, just another pair of warnings.
In a legitimate way to dispense money, Liz King Giordano has sent the names of the two South students who'll be getting the scholarships we've been supporting.
The 2010 Booker Gibson Music Award: Amy Ryan
The 2010 Vince Tampio Memorial Theater Award: Christopher Alonzo
I'll write the checks and mail them to Liz in the morning. And I'm waiting to hear from Linda Tobin Kettering, to see if she's available to present these awards, as she has in previous years.
As mentioned previously, the awards assembly will take place at South on the evening of Wednesday, June 9th, starting at 7:30. Everyone is welcome, but, judging from the advice of other years' attendees, bring cushions for the folding chairs.
Related news, also from Liz King Giordano: further information about last year's scholarship honorees, Kimberly Faust and Emily Sherman.
In addition to being given the Booker Gibson scholarship, Kimberly Faust was also awarded the Knights of Columbus Decoris Scholarship. And the graduation program mentions that she was in National Honor Society and the National Second Language Honor Society.
Emily Sherman, in addition to being given the Vince Tampio scholarship, was also awarded a Fashion Institute of Technology Presidential Scholarship, an Advanced Placement with Distinction, a Nassau All-County Art Exhibition Award, a Long Island Exhibition Advanced Vision High School Artist Award, a Long Island Best Young Artist Hecksher Museum Award, a Di Re Formal Wear Scholarship Award, and an Art Honor Society Award. The graduation program mentions that she was in the National Math Honor Society, the Art Honor Society, and the Tri-M National Music Honor Society.
Finally, I noticed that the graduation ceremony began with South's band, orchestra, and chorus performing "God Bless America," which I didn't think the deity was allowed to do anymore in public schools.
In other notes, from Stu Borman: Beautiful movie by Bob "Fiveboy" of his Panama flyover. From the one movie I've ever made, I learned that it's a lot more difficult than it looks to make a movie like Bob's. Toward the beginning, when the helicopter engine noise suddenly cut out completely, I feared the worst, but then the movie's musical theme started and the helicopter kept flying. The movie is very professionally done. Thanks for sharing it with us, Bob.
Seconded by Eric Hilton: If you enjoy watching or flying in helicopters as much as I do, you will truly like Robert Fiveson’s 12 minute video. Seeing the sights and watching Bob fly is quite enjoyable. For me, the first 12 minutes in an open helicopter is spent deciding at what altitude it is still okay to throw up. Nice video Bob. Thanks for sharing the ride.

Eric also adds: I wanted to say how saddened I was to read about Jennifer, Judy Weber’s daughter. I just looked in my '66 yearbook, and I remember Judy as one of our very attractive classmates. I wanted to extend my sincerest concerns and thoughts to Judy, and I hope Jennifer is in no discomfort.
And Eric finished: I heard from Barbara and Phil Dorin last week and was so pleased to be in touch with the Dorin family again, since it gave me my first start in photography. You should also visit Barbara Dorin’s web site, which has some excellent photography. The link is: bhaydenphotography.com You might want to ask Barbara if it is all right to publish this link, but I can’t see why not.
[Rich -- Since I believe the link has been mentioned in the newsletter, I don't see any harm in running it again. Also, I have no idea what Stu's reference to "Bob Fiveboy" means. I thought I'd inadvertently misspelled Robert Fiveson's name in the last newsletter, which was entirely possible. But I hadn't.]
In reunion news, Susan Joseph Tuckerman writes: Please add Craig Purcell to the attendees list for the July reunion. Thanks.
Finally, in a note somehow misplaced last week, Barbara Blitfield Pech writes to Stu Borman: I can't write THANK YOU any bigger. But I can say it again, to let you know how much your hard work posting the pictures is appreciated.
Again, the list of class of '65 people and others interested in the reunion. People may also just stop by, and, of course, everyone is welcome.
