Update 6-8-10
Hi,
Hot in Los Angeles. Then again, it's supposed to be. This week's notes:
From Ellen Sue Brody Pilger: More than likely, I will not be attending the reunion in July. My husband and I moved to Colorado in April and are still balancing expenses. There is a strong pull to join all of you, and we do have family in Manhattan and Brookhaven who we'd love to see. However, looking at the full picture to the end of the year, other priorities vie for our attention. If the picture changes I'll show up, but if not, have a wonderful time celebrating life and each other.
Similarly, from Stu Borman: I apologize about having to withdraw my name from the mini-reunion attendee list as I'll be traveling to Hong Kong on July 11th and won't return until after mini-reunion weekend. I hope to see everybody at the next get-together after this one.
[Rich -- As I wrote both Ellen Sue and Stu, I also have some glitches in my summer travel plans that I'm trying to work out. I'm waiting to see what happens.
Meanwhile, we should probably check in with everyone on the list at the end of this note, to see if other people's plans are still set. I've heard from a couple of people who are absolutely coming to this party. If everyone else could just let us know, it would probably help Valerie Nelson Gillen figure out how many watermelons she has to cut up for the Saturday afternoon pool party. Thanks.]
In other news, a note Bernie Scheidt sent both to Emily Kleinman Schreiber and me: On the subject of the Distinguished Alumni Award, how about Joe Klein? He is the chief political correspondent for Time magazine and the author of Primary Colors under the name "Anonymous." He is a member of the class of '66 and grew up at 21 Eastwood Lane.
Almost simultaneously, Emily had sent news about the Alumni Association's progress on this award:
In answer to your comment about the nominations -- a few names have dribbled in, and some of them
are quite good. When it was discussed at the last meeting, in May, we decided that I will include an actual application in the next Alumni Association Bulletin. Then we'll have all the information we'll need. Some alumni have just suggested a person for the award without adding any information at all, so I'm hoping that an actual application will help.
There's no deadline to give the award, so we're waiting a bit, hoping to get off on the right foot. One item we have to iron out is whether or not to break free from the district administration's selection. I know of several other alumni associations that honor their alumni without district control. They all have applications and give a few awards each year at their own celebrations. Basically, there are two types of awards: one for the hard-working alumni who've contributed to the betterment of the alumni associations, and the other for those who are known for their other gifts and work out in the wider world.
After Emily heard from Bernie and me, she also wrote: I had no idea Joe Klein was one of our alumni. I'll check to see if he already got the award. Do you know his e-mail address?
[Rich -- That set off a bit of a chase. Emily has placed a notice on Facebook. I wrote one of the editors of Time magazine by way of their Internet site. Alan Finder suggested that we try contacting Joe Klein through the public relations department of the publishing house that issued his last book. If anyone else has a suggestion, please let Emily or me know.
I also asked Bernie how many kids there were in the Klein family. I delivered their newspaper for four years, and I remember the family was friendly. But I can't remember how many family members there were.]
Bernie wrote back: There was one other brother, a younger one, Kenny. He was in the class with all the Marilyns
[Rich -- That would probably be '68: Bernie's sister Marilyn. My sister Marilyn. Other people's sisters Marilyn. There seem to have been a number in the class of '65, too. I guess Ms. Monroe was influential.]
And, while searching the Internet for a way to contact Joe Klein, I did come across his brief bio on the Time magazine site.
Joe Klein joined Time magazine in January 2003 to write a regular column on national and international affairs. His column, titled "In the Arena," appears in Time's upfront "Notebook" section. Klein is a senior writer based in New York and Washington, D.C.
As "Anonymous," Klein wrote the critically acclaimed novel Primary Colors, a best-seller inspired by the 1992 political race. Klein more recently wrote The Natural: Bill Clinton's Misunderstood Presidency, published last March. His second political novel, The Running Mate, was published in 2000. His two other nonfiction books are Payback: Five Marines After Vietnam (1984) and Woody Guthrie: A Life (1980).
Klein will remain an occasional contributor to The New Yorker, where he had been Washington correspondent since December 1996. He has written articles and book reviews for The New Republic, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Life, Rolling Stone and other publications.
Klein wrote a column called "Public Lives" for Newsweek in the early 1990s; served as a consultant for CBS News providing commentary (1992-1996); was political columnist for New York magazine (1987-1992); was a reporter for WGBH-TV Boston (1972) and news editor at The Real Paper (1972-1974). He was a contributing editor for Rolling Stone (1975-1980), and served as its Washington bureau chief (1975-1977).
Klein graduated from The University of Pennsylvania with a degree in American civilization. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and is a former Guggenheim fellow. He lives with his wife and two children in Westchester County, New York, and is also the father of two adult sons.
[Rich -- Something else I didn't find while looking for Joe Klein's e-mail address were new addresses for the following people whose addresses we used to have but have lost over the last month-or-so. If you happen to know a current address for one of these people, please let me know.]

Two reminders:
The Senior Award Assembly at South is this Wednesday evening, June 9th, at 7:30. As usual, everyone is welcome.
And the June Alumni Association meeting will be an end-of-the school year dinner at a restaurant. Emily wrote that "Too many of the regulars couldn't make the June 10th date, so we'll meet on Thursday, June 17th at 7 PM." The restaurant:
Pancho's Cantina

Almost finally, a note from Zelda White Nichols in response to what Robert Fiveson wrote last week: When I lived in California, I lived on top of a mountain. On one side was Harbison Canyon. At the turn of the 20th century, Mr. Harbison was a bee keeper and sold his honey all over the world. One of California’s infamous fires destroyed most of his hives years ago, but we still had many bees in our area. One day while walking my dog Daisy, I heard a loud humming that turned into a roar. All of a sudden, there was an enormous swarm of bees. I looked around, and there was no way we could get to the closest house in time. I was terrified for myself and Daisy, but it turned out there was no need to be. Hundreds of bees were following their queen and had no interest in us at all. It was an amazing experience that I will never forget.
Zelda adds: It's a sweet thing, friendship, a dear balm, a happy and auspicious bird of calm...
Finally, the list of class of '65 people and others interested in the reunion. People may also just stop by, and, of course, everyone is welcome.
The date: Friday, July 16th to Sunday, July 18th
The place: Hyatt Regency Wind Watch in Hauppauge, New York
