Update 4-13-10
Hi,
First, again, as I said last week, the fundraising for the Gibson / Tampio scholarships is almost done. Another $150 came in this week. Added to the nearly $750 we already had, that leaves only $100 to go.
Again, please send your checks to: Rich Eisbrouch, 23030 Dolorosa Street, Woodland Hills, California 91367. And indicate which scholarship you'd like to support. Thanks.
Something related, that came from the Alumni Association Bulletin Emily Kleinman Schreiber just sent out:
"In addition to awarding scholarships to present South students, the high school also offers Distinguished Alumni Awards. Some previous recipients have been: Ray McGrath ?59, a former congressman; Barnet Kellman '65, an Emmy Award-winning director and producer; Andrew Dolich '65, a nationally-known sports executive; Lawrence Levy '68, an award-winning Newsday editorial writer, and Deborah Oppenheimer '71, an Academy Award-winning producer.
Now, the Alumni Association would like to nominate alumni for this honor. So here’s an opportunity for all of you to recommend a deserving South graduate. Please think about your classmates and their accomplishments, and then send a list of their achievements and your reasons for thinking that person is worthy to Emily Kleinman Schreiber at: cre8em@aol.com. The final selection will be made by South's principal, Maureen Henry, and the district's superintendent of schools, Marc Bernstein."
[Rich -- This leads me to wonder about some very successful people who don't have as high a public profile as Barnet, Andy, Larry and Deborah. Some of them might be well known in their fields, such as business, as we discovered about Chuck Drimal '66. Others might not be well known at all, like Joe Barnett '68, who's spent most of his adult life as a priest, working with the poor of Nicaragua. So if you know some people like this, please send their names and your thoughts to Emily.]
In reunion news:
From Barbara Button McAnulty: Please add my name to the list of those planning to attend the summer reunion. If my health allows, I'll be there.
I'll be attending with a class of '64 classmate. It's strange how, after forty-seven years, paths cross and old loves become new again, for me, anyway. It's like being a sophomore all over again but with lots of life lessons learned. This reunion should be great fun.
[Rich -- It sounds like congratulations might be in order here. Great.]
From Susan Joseph Tuckerman: I graduated in '66. Are you inviting other classes to this summer's reunion? If so, please add my name to your list. Thanks.
[Rich -- As I wrote Susan, "Oh, yeah. Everyone's welcome."]
From Janice Williams Teeuwe: Sorry to say that I must take my name off the list for the reunion. Unfortunately, it just will not work for me at this time.
Similarly, from Lynn Nudelman Villagran: I regret that I'll be unable to attend the reunion after all. I was looking forward to it and will especially miss the Saturday afternoon around the pool, talking with old friends.
Two notes that arrived almost simultaneously and answered each other's question:
First, from Barbara Blitfield Pech: Please post this in the next update -- "Need a Ride" I'm trying to find the best travel route to the reunion, and my only option is a Kennedy airport arrival and then a drive to Hauppauge. If anyone is doing the same, please let me know, so we can hook up.
And from Bernie Scheidt: I just purchased a retirement place in Southbury, Connecticut, and will be driving from there to the reunion. If anyone needs to be picked up at JFK or LaGuardia, or even in White Plains, I could probably do that.
The follow-up, from Barbara: Bernie + Barbara = b'sheirdt
Also, I was chatting with Irene Saunders Goldstein today, and she may be sitting next to me in Bernie's car. Her flight options from are worse than mine -- two stops and high ticket prices. The way things are, it looks like it might be Kennedy for everyone.
So, anyone who's flying in, check your travel plans soon. Flights directly to Islip have been dropped from most major cities and by many carriers.
.
[Rich -- Checking travel plans well in advance always seems to make sense. And, if there are other people who have car space, this might be the place to coordinate carpooling.]
In non-reunion notes:
From Linda Cohen Greenseid to Robert Fiveson: Thanks for that link you sent last week to your son's video. http://www.break.com/usercontent/2010/3/22/italian-birthday-cake-1785553 Obviously, Josh has his dad's sense of humor. Also, what a handsome lad he is -- reminiscent of you at that age.
Robert sent another link this week: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNabRv1SBwk
From Linda Tobin Kettering: Things here in Green Acres/Mill Brook are good. The trees are blossoming with new leaves and flowers, neighbors are out walking and talking, and I'm selling houses. Makes it a nice spring, all in all.
[Rich -- Also, last week, I forgot to add a reminder about the monthly Alumni Association meeting on Thursday, April 8th. When I wrote to apologize to Emily Kleinman Schreiber, she said: "It would always be nice for us to have more people in the association and at the meetings. Maybe you could post the web site address again."
Yep. Here it is: www.vsshs-alumni.org/ ]
And from Emily: Booker Gibson Night at the Irish Coffee Pub will be early this year: Wednesday, May 5, 2010. Schmooze time will begin at 6:30, and Booker will begin performing at 7:00.
Call 631-277-0007 to make your reservation, and tell the receptionist you're with South’s Alumni Association. Again, the pub’s address is: 131 Carleton Avenue, East Islip, New York 11730. Come alone or bring a friend, but don’t miss a most enjoyable evening.
Finally, the list of class of '65 people interested in the reunion. People from adjacent classes may also stop by, and, of course, everyone is welcome.
The date: Friday, July 16th to Sunday, July 18th
The place: Hyatt Regency Wind Watch in Hauppauge, New York
The phone number: 631-784-1234
