Update 6-22-10

Hi,

First, I had some trouble getting last week's update delivered, I think because I let it go a little long.  So sorry if some people got duplicates, and I hope it doesn't happen again this week.

Second, I spoke today with Valerie Nelson Gillen, asking if there was anything the rest of us needed to do for the Saturday afternoon party.  She mainly needed an approximate number of people coming, and I said probably between 20 and 30.  She said she'd be fine with that, even if it rained because we could all fit into her house.  Also, if we end up extending the party there into evening, we may all have to chip in to send out for pizza and more beer.

So the plan is:
Friday night, we meet at the hotel bar at 5 PM.  We eat and drink there or continue on to dinner, either in the hotel or somewhere nearby, coordinating our migration with later-arriving people by cell phones.
Saturday morning, we meet as we choose for breakfast, coordinating, as necessary, by cell phones.
Saturday afternoon, we move to Valerie's, carpooling as needed.
Saturday evening, we move off to dinner, or we stay put for dinner and order in, or some of us slip off to hear Booker play, and then we coordinate with the others by cell phone and regroup, possibly still at Valerie's.
Eventually, we get thrown out of Valerie's and return to the hotel, possibly to the bar if it's still open, otherwise -- quietly -- to someone's room
Sunday morning, we again meet as we choose for breakfast, coordinating, as necessary, by cell phones.
Things that we need:
    Cell phones.
A shared list of cell phone numbers.
    Cars.
A sense, in advance, of who's coming to which party or parties, so people don't accidentally get lost.
    Valerie's address.
    The Irish Pub address.
I think everything else will take care of itself once we get there.  We are intelligent adults.
I also spoke with Linda Cohen Greenseid, who said that she, Robin Feit Baker, and Dennis Shapiro are carpooling to Valerie's Saturday afternoon party.

And I spoke with my sister, who said that the class of '68 reunion is costing $120 per person, which is, unfortunately, cutting some people out.  I mentioned that we're trying to include as many people as possible by keeping costs down.

Eric Hilton wrote from Florida saying:  It looks like my wife Gilda and I will not be able to attend the reunion. Last year, as a thank-you for my photography services at SRQ Pride, I was given a cruise to the Bahamas. Unfortunately, the only time we can take the cruise is the week before the reunion.  Since I have never been on a cruise that didn’t carry nuclear missiles, we are looking forward to it.
[Rich: I can't remember what SRQ stands for, but since Eric lives in Sarasota, I suspect that's what the S means.  And I get the nuclear missile part.]

Larry Rugen wrote:  Sorry -- my wife, Joan, and I will also have to back out of the reunion parties.

Emily Kleinman Schreiber again mentioned:  I'd like to visit all you younger "kids" when you're reunioning.  Is that okay with you?

[Rich -- it's absolutely okay, as it says toward the bottom of this note.  We look forward to seeing everyone.]

On Peter Rosen's hair tonic quest, various people offered suggestions:
Barbara Blitfield Pech:  The green goo was called jo-cur, or perhaps jo-cyrl -- I can't spell either one.  My brother's summertime crew cut-flat top front depended on it, and even after his grown back "winter" side part returned, the goo was my mother's best revenge for keeping his hair slicked down to his head and not moving.  I remember the comb went right into the jar and came out with hardly a drip to his soon-to-be crispy head.

Marc Jonas:  Dippity Doo?

Amy Miller:  Prell?  Brill Cream -- "a little dab'll do ya?"  Or did the barbers have their own secret gloppy stuff known only to barbers?

Allen Moss in Maine:  I believe it was Wildroot Hair Tonic.  It came in a tall glass container with a small indented glass spout in the top.  You see the bottles sometimes on e-bay.  It smelled pretty funky aside from leaving your hair feeling like straw!

Joanne Shapiro Polner:  Brylcreem -- it was pure white in Canada and off-white in the US.  Also had a distinctive odor.  Vitalis -- with V-7, greaseless. But also known as liquid gold," so not green.  Score -- clear
Butch Wax -- not liquid.  Top Brass -- I thought you used this to clean candlesticks.  Groom and Clean -- water soluble, washed out easily.  Wildroot Hair TonicWildroot Cream Oil.  Also, look at this site for barbershops of the world:  http://www.slickville.com/sections/barbershop/barbershop_menu.html
And this one:  thegreaseshop.com

Peter clarified:  Not sure that’s what I’m thinking of.  You had to pour it out, and the bottle had a black cap.  They sold it at the barber in Green Acres Shopping Center.  Was that place called Sal’s?

Apropos of nothing, Jay Berliner wrote:  Just thought I would drop a note to you from China. I am here for two weeks on business and will be visiting seven cities.  Your e-mails go around the world.
[Rich: There's more, but just so this doesn't get too long again, I'm going to cut to the reunion list.]

The continuing-to-be amended list of class of '65 people and others interested in the reunion.  People may also just stop by, and, of course, everyone is welcome.

The dates: Friday, July 16th to Sunday, July 18th
The place: Hyatt Regency Wind Watch in Hauppauge, New York
