Update 6-29-10
Hi,
Before I forget, Happy Fourth of July. Also, I'm obviously having trouble sending these newsletters after several years trouble-free. That's especially bad because last week's had some important information about the reunion. So does this week's.
Mainly, from Valerie Nelson Gillen: First, no matter what you said last week about the party going on "until Valerie throws us out," I have not thrown anyone out of my house in years! Anyone who wants to come to my home is more than welcome. And bring your bathing suit!
My address is: 32 Atlantic Avenue, West Sayville, New York 11796.
My home phone number is: 631-567-5593.
The cross street is Montauk Highway, and it's very easy to get to my house from the hotel. Go east on Veteran's Highway -- Route 454 -- make a right turn on Lakeland Avenue, stay straight on that road toward Sayville, and after you cross the railroad tracks, go to the traffic light and make a right turn. You'll now be on Main Street -- Montauk Highway. Go through town, pass the 7/11 on the left side of road, pass the firehouse also on the left at the traffic light -- Chase Bank is on corner. Make a left turn on Atlantic Avenue, and our house is the 6th on the right side of road. And I've never run out of food yet!
About the e-mail problem:
From Helen David: Yes, I got two copies of the newsletter last week. But thanks for all the news you send blazing to Arizona.
From Barbara Blitfield Pech: I just got the the duplicate -- the first never showed up. My mantra, which you are welcome to share, is: "I haven't figured Earth out yet. Don't expect me to explain cyberspace."
From Ray Staley: I did get it. But it was in my spam mail.
From Betsy Fels Pottruck: I got both of them.
[Rich -- As I wrote Betsy, I guess the rule is: if you want the update, and you haven't gotten it, please write me. That will keep me from cluttering everyone's mailboxes with duplicates. And, unless I mention a change the previous week, I usually send the newsletter on Monday night.]
About Peter Rosen's hair tonic:
From Jean Cohen Oklan. Hi, everyone! In answer to Pete Rosen's question, "Was that barber shop in Green Acres Shopping Center called Sal’s?"
Oooh-oooh, I know the answer to this one! Sal's was located on Rockaway Avenue and had the antique "kiddy" rides located in its front window. I could only look at them, not touch.
I went to Sal's every time my dad got his hair cut. I would sit on one of the big leather chairs lined up against the wall and watch all the men getting haircuts. Sal and his business partner were experts at sharpening their razors on the strap and performing the "ritual" of placing the steaming white towels on faces. During one of my visits to Sal's, I found dollar bills strewn all over the floor, picked them up, and gave them to Sal. On my next visit, I was rewarded by the owner with $2.00. Fond memory. I believe Sal's is still there.
[Rich -- I bet I got my hair cut there over 600 times, almost every week from first grade through twelfth. But I don't think the shop's been there for decades. Certainly, Sal hasn't. He also used to sing "Open the door, Richard," to me when I walked in. I bet he did that a lot, Richard being a then-popular name.]
From Barnet Kellman: Pete, are you thinking of pomade?
From Barbara Blitfield Pech: Who knew there were as many, if not more, men's hair "tonics" even back then. And they say women are hair obsessed. HA... I mean HAir!
About another celebration, an invitation forwarded by Emily Kleinman Schreiber by way of Marc Tenzer:
The Town of Hempstead and Ace Landscaping, in conjunction with the Millbrook Civic Association, presents its annual concert featuring the oldies of "The Manhattan Skyline"
When: Friday evening, July 23rd, at 7:30. Approximate end time: 10:30.
Where: The Forest Road School parking lot
Bring your chairs and friends.
And on the reunion:
From Benette Steindam and Dennis Pizzimenti: Made the hotel reservation for Saturday night. We'll be there Saturday.
From Barbara Button McAnulty: Disappointed as I am, I will not be attending the reunion. Lower back surgery is required, and in order to facilitate walking and moving without pain, that is now my priority. Hope you all have a wonderful time. Looking forward to seeing pictures, the ones online now are wonderful -- a job well done. Regards to all.
From Carol Bunim Okin: Wish Bob and I could join you for the reunion, but it's my niece's wedding weekend here in New Jersey. Have a great time!
From Mary Sipp-Green: I've been thinking about this reunion for a long time, looking forward to seeing everyone. Now,something important has come up in my family, and I need to be present to help out. Duty calls. Needless to say, I am really disappointed but know you will all have a great time being together. Guess I'll have to settle for the after-party news. I send everyone my best regards.
From Barnet Kellman: I've been crazy busy and haven't been reading the newsletter. I just caught up with the most recent edition and was amazed to learn about Joe Klein and Richard Haas, and I'm jealous of Sheryl Kaller! It must have been the fluoride they put in our water!
Also, I noticed you have me down for the reunion. Actually, I can’t be there. As it turns out, we are only going to be back east for two weeks this summer, and that weekend is our son Mike’s camp parents' weekend. But please say "hi" to everyone for me.
That puts the updated list as follows. And remember, people may just stop by -- to any of these parties. As Valerie mentions, everyone is welcome.
The dates: Friday, July 16th to Sunday, July 18th
The hotel: Hyatt Regency Wind Watch in Hauppauge, New York
The hotel phone number: 631-784-1234
Rich's Cell Phone number: 818-667-5271
The parties:
Friday night, we meet at the hotel bar at 5 PM. We eat and drink there or continue on to dinner, either in the hotel or somewhere nearby, coordinating our migration with later-arriving people by cell phones.
Saturday morning, we meet as we choose for breakfast, coordinating, as necessary, by cell phones.
Saturday afternoon, around 12, we move to Valerie's, carpooling as needed.
Saturday evening, we move off to dinner, or we stay put for dinner and order in, or some of us slip off to hear Booker play, and then we coordinate with the others by cell phone and regroup, possibly still at Valerie's.
Way Later Saturday evening, we return to the hotel, possibly to the bar if it's still open, otherwise -- quietly -- to someone's room.
Sunday morning, we again meet as we choose for breakfast, coordinating, as necessary, by cell phones. Then we say "goodbye."
