Update 7-6-10

Hi,

To begin with, last week, when I copied Helen David's note, I interchanged a couple of words.  She wrote, "Thanks for all the mail you send to blazing Arizona," and I read, "Thanks for all the mail you send blazing to Arizona."
I immediately wrote her to apologize, and she wrote back saying she's not that poetic, but she didn't want anyone to think she was in her dotage.
    She's not.  I am.

Judy Peters Sylvan wrote saying:  I am sorry to report that I, too, will not be able to attend the reunion.  Unforeseen conflicts have cropped up.  I had hoped to make my reunion attendance a triple, but it was not to be.  Have a great time!

[Rich -- I wrote back saying I'd miss Judy, especially since she was indirectly responsible for a pair of beat-around shorts I've been wearing for the last five years.  They're just tan, and I bought them at the last reunion to go into the pool.  The joke was that the bathing suits sold at the motel were flowered, and I was too conservative to wear one.]

Judy Hartstone writes:  As one of my favorite songs goes: “On the road again....…” (although, technically, as I write, I’m finally off the road.)……..Pittsburgh was a nice interlude, but it turns out I’m really a “California Girl” at heart -- and I wanted to be closer to family -- so in April I sold my condo, and I've just driven 2600 miles back across the country with Sadie, arriving June 24 at a house I’m renting.  Since I’m missing the upcoming reunion for my cousin’s daughter’s wedding, I’m hoping there will be a Southern California mini-reunion one of these days. I've got plenty of room for company – and a beautiful view of the mountains. E-mail contact remains the same:  judyinfo4@msn.com.

[Rich -- It will be good to have lunch with Judy when I get back west.  Ellen Sue Brody Pilger had intended to join us, but now Ellen Sue and her husband live in Colorado.  Still, it seems that Rob Kelman is headed further west, so maybe Judy and I will have lunch with him.
Though -- not to confuse Judys -- Judy Peters Sylvan also wrote, "It's such a production to try and get us all together.  We're all over the map..."   And it sometimes seems as difficult to get two people together for lunch as it does thirty.]

Speaking of making arrangements, Peter Rosen wrote:  I’m very much looking forward to seeing everyone who will be part of our 45th.  I think the lack of structure will only add to the fun and relaxation.
A few very kind classmates had offered to pick me up at one of the New York airports, so I wanted to close the loop through our weekly newsletter.  I’m actually now getting in on Thursday and will be renting a car for a day to visit a law school buddy in Southampton.  On Friday, I'll then drive to Islip Airport to drop off the car and hopefully get the hotel to pick me up there, so I should be getting there mid-afternoon.  On Sunday, if anyone is driving into New York City and has room for me, that would be great.  Getting me to the train station would be fine, too.  See everyone soon.  (Peter's e-mail address:  peter.rosen@hrsas.com)

Other arrangements, from Irene Saunders Goldstein:  I'm looking forward to our reunion and to catching up with everyone.  I'll be arriving in Islip around 5 PM on Friday.  I'll be shlepping a lot of luggage, so I'd probably drop it off at the hotel desk and then make my way to where you're drinking or eating.

[Rich -- I asked Booker Gibson when would be a good time to stop by the Irish Coffee Pub on Saturday, and he wrote the following.]

From Booker:  Saturdays are usually the busiest and noisiest nights, with more people and many "Happy Birthdays."  Nevertheless,  I'm  really looking forward to seeing any '65 people.  Right next to me is my yearbook, so I can study the names and faces.
I start playing about 6:30 PM, and I'm pretty fresh until about 9 or 9:30 -- unless a very different crowd is suddenly there, which often happens.  The Irish Pub has each party sign in for a specific time, which keeps people moving, and it's good business.  So I play until 11.
I try to take 10 minute breaks, 2 or 3 times, or one -- for some food -- which usually lasts 15 minutes or more.  Also, when I arrive about 5:30 or 6, sometimes early parties may be in progress with young kids.  But parents try to take their kids home early.

[Rich -- The Pub, the hotel, and Valerie Nelson Gillen's house make a triangle.  It's 10.5 miles from the hotel to Valerie's, 6.5 miles from Valerie's to the Pub, and 7.5 miles from the Pub to the hotel.  I won't make a math problem of this, but I'm saying it should be easy for any of us to get to any of these places easily on Saturday night.]

The reunion dates: Friday, July 16th to Sunday, July 18th

The hotel:  Hyatt Regency Wind Watch, 1717 Motor Parkway, Hauppauge, New York 11788  631-784-1234

The parties:
Friday night, we meet at the hotel bar at 5 PM.  We eat and drink there or continue on to dinner, either in the hotel or somewhere nearby, coordinating our migration with later-arriving people by cell phones.
Saturday morning, we meet as we choose for breakfast, coordinating, as necessary, by cell phones.
Saturday afternoon, around 12, we move to Valerie's, carpooling as needed.
Saturday evening, we move off to dinner, or we stay put for dinner and order in, or some of us slip off to hear Booker play, and then we coordinate with the others by phone and regroup, possibly still at Valerie's.
Way Later Saturday evening, we return to the hotel, possibly to the bar if it's still open, otherwise -- quietly -- to someone's room.
Sunday morning, we again meet as we choose for breakfast, coordinating, as necessary, by cell phones.   Then we say "goodbye."

Valerie Nelson Gillen's house:  32 Atlantic Avenue, West Sayville, New York  11796.  631-567-5593.
From the hotel:  Go east on Veteran's Highway -- Route 454 -- make a right turn on Lakeland Avenue, stay straight on that road toward Sayville, and after you cross the railroad tracks, go to the traffic light and make a right.  You'll be on Main Street -- Montauk Highway.  Go through town, pass the 7/11 on the left, pass the firehouse also on the left at the traffic light -- Chase Bank is on corner.  Make a left on Atlantic Avenue, and our house is the 6th on the right side of road.

The Irish Coffee Pub, 131 Carleton Avenue, East Islip, New York 11730.  631-277-0007
