Update 11-13-01

Hi,

First up:  Paul DeMartino and Terri Donohue are going ahead with the informal, Thanksgiving weekend, New York-area reunion Paul had mentioned earlier.  It's still being planned, and it's going ahead fast.  So if you'll be in New York for the holiday, and want to get together with Paul, Terri and company, please contact one of them immediately.  Here are their specific notes:

From Paul:  I just received an e-mail from Terri Donohue, who is in South Carolina.  She likes my idea about getting together around the holidays in New York and suggested either Friday or Saturday after Thanksgiving for a get-together, even if it's just for drinks.  So I'm asking you to post this in the next Update:   anyone interested in getting together for either lunch, dinner, or drinks on either day, please contact me either by e-mail or telephone and I'll put something together.  It will be informal, just meeting at a pub or restaurant, nothing fancy, probably on Long Island.  If no one is interested, Terri and I will have a drink for the entire Class of '65.

From Terri:  I contacted Paul DeMartino and suggested we meet for cocktail hour Friday or Saturday or both on Long Island or in the city.  As soon as the place and hour are determined, put it in the next newsletter and we'll see who shows up.

More from Paul:  I think you also heard from Terri Donohue by now, and Dennis Shapiro says that he is in for an informal get-together over the Thanksgiving holiday as well.  Also, I re-ran the Newsday Reunion Column ad again today, so we may pick up a few more former South that way.  And don't worry, the ad is free!  Yes, some things in life really are free.

More neat news, this time from Barnet Kellman:  I could write this all out, but it's more fun to follow the progress from these three letters:

I am looking for Jan Martin who was a foreign exchange student at Valley
Stream South High School on Long Island, New York in the middle 1960's.  I
understand there is a Jan Martin working at the National Association for
Civil Engineers in Stockholm.  Is he the same Jan Martin?
I, and other friends from his high school, would like to reconnect with him.
Thank you for your help.
       Sincerely,
       Barnet Kellman
       Los Angeles, California

       Barnet,
Connection achieved.  Really surprised.  I am working here at the Swedish
Association of Graduate Engineers as the Secretary General.  Want to have a
look?  Use our home-page www.cf.se, then Navigera (navigate) "Detta Šr CF" and you will find the latest official photo.  I'm on my way to a meeting so I only send
you these few lines.  Really glad for your initiative.  Are you on your way to
Sweden or already here?
       Jan

       Jan,
I'm so excited!  This internet thing really works!  One of our classmates has initiated a website for the South High Class of 65, and there's been a lot of talk of a reunion.  Several of us, including Peggy Galinger, Irene Saunders, and yours truly, have wanted to track you down.  Sounds like I got there first, but you may yet hear from Irene's bloodhounds.
I, of course, remembered your father's name, Tyr, and your city, Norkopping, but I lost the rest of your family's address and info.  Anyway, here we are.
00020000063D00000D0C 637,       I too have to run out now, but I wanted to get this out on the wire.  I have
your office phone number, but when I called you were away from your desk.  Meantime, I will broadcast the news that you've been found, and I'll talk to you
later, my friend,
       Barnet

I went onto the web site myself, and it's relatively easy to find Jan's photo.  But for those who don't want to navigate whole pages of Swedish, I've lifted Jan's picture and will put it on the home page tonight (AOL's too slow during the day).  Barnet's also sent some other pictures, fairly recent ones of Toni Rea, Theresa Margolin, Martin Solomon, and Vince Tampio, and old shots of Steve Gooitzeit and Elliott Weinger.  Some I've posted.  Others I just got today and will add tonight.  Anyway, it's great news about Jan, and I've asked Barnet to get Jan's permission to add his e-mail address to our list.

Also, while I'm thinking about photos:  I've been trying to make those already posted on the home page as clear as possible, in a way that will download most quickly.  But everyone's computer seems to handle web pages differently, and AOL has busier and less busy times.  So if you click on something on the home page and are told the follow-up page doesn't exist---or if it's taking too long to get it open---either back off a step and try and re-open the page, or try late in the evening or early in the morning.  And please keep sending those photos, old and new.  They're like little reunions.  Also, someone remember to take a camera to the Thanksgiving reunion, so the rest of us can see pictures.
 000200000D2E00001343 D28,
As to the May reunion:  several people have volunteered their help over the last few months and I'm forwarding their names to Michele Cohen Collins and Paul DeMartino.  Since both Paul and Michele are in the New York area, it will be a lot easier for them to make the party arrangements, and if you want to help and haven't already mentioned it, please contact either of them.  Paul's e-mail address is listed above.  Michele's is:  Mac8247@aol.com

Also, from Barbara Blitfield Pech:  If I remember correctly, wasn't the senior prom at a hotel at Kennedy airport?  And wouldn't this be a good consideration for a weekend reunion, as the proximity to the airport without the additional expense and inconvenience of car rentals would be taken care of?  Also, the Islip airport has hotels, and that airport might be easier to fly into than Kennedy.  But if Kennedy was where the prom was held, it might be kinda cool to come back to the scene of the event.
Also, my brother went to New York in 1998 for his 30-year reunion.  It was also a weekend affair, at the Holiday Inn on Sunrise Highway in Lynbrook or Rockville Center. You might want to check it out, as they seem to have a recent track record with this type of party, and will have rates, planners and everything else we might need.

From Anonymous:  I think that if it all the other plans don't work out, we should find out the exact date of the Nudelman family reunion, let them make all of the arrangements, and all meet there.

From Terry Shields:  I don't have a Harley like Janice Williams.  I hope she sends a picture of her and the bike!

From Robert Fiveson:  I think the idea of multiple reunion days is a great one.  In a real sense it could then mirror the high school experience. Think on it -- day one we do some serious flirting accommodated by liberal amounts of alcohol.  Day two we do some serious flirting, accommodated by liberal amounts of alcohol. Then we have assignations, consummations and of course liberal libations.  Day three we have serious regrets, 'break up' and feel really great that we are still attractive enough to entice anyone at all -- much less our unfulfilled fantasy of 40 years ago.
Having the class of 66 there will enhance it even more, as we will have younger people looking up to us (oy).
By the way, whoever suggested we have it at the South High lunch room obviously now has dementia.  Also, I will pay for Mr. Argenzio to come visit.  I will enjoy very much poking him in the chest with two fingers as he did to me so many times.

As for combining the reunion with other classes:  almost no one has gotten back to me about that, and the few people who have said anything, have all had different opinions.  So I leave that decision to Paul and Michele, once they've started coordinating arrangements.

Also, finally this absolution from the Social Security Death Records:

So, including our still-alive Carlo, there have been at least three.  Who'd have thought it?  Now explain the multiple Jeff Edelsons.
