Update 3-26-02

Hey,

Yeah, well, I got busy editing class bios and didn't get this assembled on time.

Speaking of which:  Nancy Garfield just sent me the 30-or-so bios she's already gotten in answer to the questionnaire.  The plan is to start circulating them now---minus the home addresses and phone numbers (for privacy)---to encourage other people to answer the questionnaire.  I've also just ransacked all the earlier updates for bios, and I'll be sending the whole collection on to everyone later today.  I've purposely made the font small to minimize the size of the document.  But you can enlarge it.

Nancy also asks that people who know class members without computers do us a favor:  Print out the questionnaire and mail it to those people.  Then they can mail the questionnaires back to Nancy.  Her home address is: 3741 S.W. Munson, Topeka, Kansas  66604

And you don't have to be coming to the reunion to fill out a questionnaire.

Again, the questionnaire:
    Name:
Home address (optional -- or city & state where you currently live):
    Phone number (optional):
    E-mail address (optional):
Occupation (or how you spend your days or nights):
Spouse/Partner's name (if you have one):
Children and/or pets names (please distinguish):
    Hobbies or pastimes:
    Retirement plans:
    Attending the reunion?
Anything else you want us to know:
Please send your answers to Nancy Garfield at NGarf1234@aol.com

One final question from Nancy, which I know other people have asked before, about clothes:  What are we all wearing for this weekend?  As I've mentioned earlier, we can keep it fairly casual, then get a little bit spiffed for Saturday night.  But, see, the advantage of being a guy, is I can put on a sports coat with my T-shirt and jeans, and look fine for just about anything.  Nancy assures me this doesn't work for everyone.  So the concept of spiffing is all in your mind.  But if people want to give other people some idea of what they're wearing Saturday night, and send that info here, I don't thing Vogue will mind losing the scoop.

Some other notes before business:

From Steve Gootzeit:  Put me down!  I had been waiting for my teenage acne to clear up, but what the hell.  Also, even though I'm sure the same comment is made for every year, I really do think that our class had an above-average collection of above-average people.

From Barbara Blitfield Pech:  Pete and Jerry, not that we're bragging, but a two-hour phone call...pleeze!  Nice try boys, but Robin Feit and I have you beat big time -- 3.5 hours.  And that was just catching up on the first 10 years after South.  We still have much more to rake up -- I mean, chat about.  And isn't that what all those free nights and weekends are for?

From Jerry Bittman:  Holy cow, speaking about a name from the past:  I just received a phone call from Stuie Glasser.  He is doing great and living in Massachusetts.  He promises to try his hardest to attend the reunion, but he is very busy with work.  I told Stuie he'd better be there because if he doesn't show up then I'll be the ugliest guy there.  It was so good hearing from him, as I've been searching for years to find him.  Pete Rosen, I gave Stuie your phone number -- hope you don't mind.  The closer it gets to the reunion the more excited I get.  I also just got a phone number for Robbie Colman.  I heard he is in California, so I will try to reach him.  Plus, I tried to get Chuck Drimal, from the class of '66 to attend, but he does not think he can make it.  See you all soon.

From Mark Perlman:  I regret that I cannot attend the reunion. I was looking forward to it but, the distance (not a 6-hour drive from Colorado Springs to New York) and financial obligations make it virtually impossible to attend.  I am, however planning on attending the next one. That will be approximately in 2014 right?
00020000063500000F21 62F,       On another note, I believe that Tom Connelly graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and the last time I heard anything of him he was in Tarrytown or Poughkeepsie or somewhere in that area, but that was almost 20 years ago.

From Eric Hilton:  I just made airline reservations for the reunion.  I loved the photos on the website.  There is some wonderful information, and the old shots of my classes in Brooklyn Avenue brought back so many wonderful memories.  I wish that I could remember most of the students.  I noticed that some of my old classmates had passed away.  I had an old friend named Robert Friedman who lived just behind South High.  Can anyone tell me the address of the Robert Friedman who passed away -- while he went to South?  Also, do you know if Mr. Brenner will be attending?
Even though I was scheduled to graduate in 1965, I ended up graduating in 1966 because while everyone else was studying Math, English, and History, I was very busy studying the female anatomy in my basement and behind South High by the bridge that went over Mill Pond!  Sooooooooooo, they decided it was best if I repeated 7th grade.  What did I learn?  Well, that paying attention in school was very important.  And what a double D bra was used to hold -- tissue paper!

The business:

Hospitality suite donation (to stock it for the three days):  voluntary

Paul DeMartino's address:  (Please remember to make your check out to Paul DeMartino, note South '65 Reunion somewhere on it, indicate how many people it covers at $45 per dinner for Saturday night, and, if you wish, add a contribution toward the hospitality suite.)
   Paul DeMartino
   10 Saltaire Place
   Massapequa, New York  11758
Also, Paul writes:  Please let people who've sent checks know that unless they receive a confirmation from me, the check was not received.

Other news from Paul:  The hotel group sales associate for our reunion, Mirjana at ext. 6324, assured me that the group rate was still available, and apologized for any booking problems we are having.

Update from Terri:  Mr. Argenzio sends his regrets, but remembers the classes of the early- and mid-sixties as the best South ever had.  He will be at the Florida reunion along with Mr. Rosov.  I called Mr. Solomon.  He will be visiting a new grandchild that weekend, but said he is composing a letter about how fondly he remembers our class.   Mr. Tampio and Mr. Rooney also send regrets.  But Mr. O'Brien said he'd definitely be there.  That make our attending teachers:  Ms. Rea, Mr. Gibson, Mr. Schmidt, Mrs. Ressa Schmidt, and Mr. O'Brien.

Our running totals:  So far 90 people have paid for their Saturday night dinners---that's a total of $4050 toward the projected $4616 (corrected again) cost.  Plus, we have $1875 donated toward the hospitality suite.
00020000072800001B71 722,       Paul notes:  Of the $1875 collected toward the Hospitality Suite, $700 is for the suite, so the net is now $1,175.  The juke box is $350, netting us $825 for provisions. This should be a good start.  Dennis came over last Thursday night and we figure that we'll need about $300 for wine, beer, sodas, and bottled water.  That leaves a bit more than $500 to use on food.  But we still need to figure out what to do about the video.
Paul also adds:  There are about two dozen people listed as Coming, who haven't yet paid for their dinners.  I don't mean to sound like an accountant, but the more money we have up front, the more we'll know how we can spend it.

Second Notice of the next New York informal gathering:
When:    Saturday, April 6th, 2002  1:00 PM
Where:   Lily Flanagans, 279 Sunrise Highway, Rockville Centre
Contact: Paul DeMartino: PINA_1@msn.com or 516-799-1590  Or just show up.

And, yes, I did manage to post the 18 new photos from the February and March New York gatherings, as promised last week.  They've been on the home page since Wednesday.  Check 'em out.

Finally, a joke.  I don't want to turn this into yet another source of irritating e-mail humor, but this is fairly appropriate, and it came, almost simultaneously, from both Ellen Epstein Silver and Nick Messina:
While waiting for my first appointment in the reception room of a new dentist, I noticed his certificate, which bore his full name.  Suddenly, I remembered that a tall, handsome boy with the same name had been in my high school class almost 40 years ago.  Upon seeing him, however, I quickly discarded any such thought.  This balding, gray-haired man with the deeply lined face was too old to have been my classmate.  After he had examined my teeth, I asked him if he had attended the local high school.
 00020000095A00002293 954,       "Yes," he replied.
"When did you graduate?" I asked.
       "In 1964."
"Why, you were in my class!" I exclaimed.
He looked at me closely, and then asked, "What did you teach?"
