Update 3-19-02
Hi,
A lot of business reminders. But first some news:
From Jerry Bittman: I am so pumped up for the reunion. Last night I spoke with Pete Rosen for 2 hours, though it seemed like only 10 minutes. And like Pete said, we need at least 3 weeks to catch up. I'm hoping to fly into Dulles Airport and meet Pete there, then drive up to the reunion. Pete and his wife Phyllis moved to Atlanta in 1973 because of me. Cannot wait till I see everybody.
From Peter Rosen: I just got off the phone with Jerry Bittman after 2 hours. It was one of the most fun times I've had in a while. What great memories. Also, I just received as a birthday gift an original Official Guide to the New York Worlds Fair 1964-1965. I'll bring it, along with my yearbook.
From Eric Hilton: I was just speaking with Diane Fruzetti who will be attending the reunion. She told me that you are trying to find Eric Wohlgemuth. I have spoken with his brother Greg a few weeks ago -- Greg lives in Owassa, Oklahoma. I can try to find out where Eric is so you can contact him.
I am also looking into attending the reunion, if I can get the time off and find extra funds. Also, I noticed that my e-mail address is wrong on the contact list. It should read the_photomaker@yahoo.com. I hope that I am able to participate in this yearÕs reunion!
From Irene Augustin Wehn: Hi! You can add two more for the reunion -- Irene Augustin Wehn and Olga Berne. We both are looking forward to it a lot. See you then.
From Steven Davidson and Ellen Nudelman Davidson: We are coming to the reunion, and I am sending in our check today. Someone else asked me where the reunion was, and I wasn't sure of the place and address. Could you please include the place and details in the next update? See you at the reunion.
0002000006B10000070B 6AB, (Rich, again: Reunion information included below. And thanks for the suggestion. The information will now be included regularly. And there's more detailed information on the home page.)
From Judy Hartstone: It's dangerous what a little free time can do! I knew I had saved some letters from Miss Dillback, the outstanding English teacher I in the eighth grade. Now my office looks a wreck, but I did find the letters from 1994 with her New Hampshire address. I'll contact her and see if she can make it to the reunion. I would love to see her in person and thank her for instilling in me a love for writing and giving me a solid foundation in the mysteries of good grammar.
From Zelda White Nichols: I am so sorry I will be missing this reunion, but I simply cannot get away at this time for a cross country trip. There are so many people I would like to see again. I have been in touch with a few, thanks to this site, and look forward to the day when we can physically reunite. It is so much fun reading about all the arrangements being made and the names of people attending. Funny how long term memory really holds fast. I remember everyone that I went to school with at William. S. Buck, and many names from Valley Stream South as well. I will be with you in thought, if not in person.
From Robert "Ike" Eichinger: Count on two more at the reunion! My wife and I already have our plane reservations and I am sending the check for Saturday night to Paul DeMartino today. We will be staying with a cousin in the area. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone on Friday evening. Also, has anyone heard from Mario DeRogatis? If anybody has any info on him, please let me know.
00020000063000000DB6 62A,
From Jane Ruzow Tiell: Often, the only e-mail I look forward to receiving are the weekly Updates, and I can't imagine what we will all do after the reunion. If I can be of assistance, please let me know.
From Ellen Epstein Silver: Just a quick note to wish a lot of people a happy 55th birthday -- another milestone coming up for all of us born in 1947. Looking forward to seeing you in April.
From Jean Cohen Oklan: Your bar mitzvah anniversary reminded me of an incident that happened to my son when he was in Junior High. He was the only Jewish kid attending his school here in rural Vermont, and although I would go in and speak with his teachers, the school faculty still fell far short of being politically correct and comfortable with Ezra's ethnicity. He put up with many racial slurs from the second grade on, and whenever the class was learning about Israel, or the word Jew came up, Ezra said his classmates would stare at him to see his reaction. When discussing subjects for a term paper, Ezra's English teacher told him to pick something he was familiar with -- like being Jewish!
So, Ezra wanted to have a bar mitzvah in spite of all the prejudice he encountered. And he didn't want his bar mitzvah speech to be concerned with his haftorah, as was the norm. Instead, he wanted to speak about what it was like growing up being Jewish in a non-Jewish, farming, community.
Soon after his bar mitzvah, Ezra's English class was looking at some Hebrew scripture alongside the English translation of the beginning of the Old Testament. I
000200000671000013E0 66B,don't remember in what context this was, but the teacher asked Ezra, since he was Jewish, if he could read Hebrew. Ezra said, "Of course," and he proceeded to recite his haftorah letting his teacher and classmates think he was reading "And in the
beginning...." Nobody knew what the hell he was saying in Hebrew, least of all himself. But haftorahs come in handy when you least expect it!
Also, about my coming to the reunion: I know I said I probably wouldn't be, because I have to drive from Vermont to Long Island two weeks earlier. But you never know with me. I just might be one of those people who shows up at the
last minute with a check in hand, causing Paul DeMartino to mutter under his breath!
And now the business:

00020000080F00001A4B 809,
A note from Terri Donohue Calamari: The group discount room rate of $109 should be honored right up to the reunion date. But the hotel has asked us to make all possible reservations before April 5th. They've set aside a block of rooms for us, but they do have other parties. So they'd like to be able to free as many rooms as possible for other events.
Our running totals: So far 66 people have paid for their Saturday night dinners---that's a total of $2970 toward the projected $4500 (corrected) cost. Plus, we have $1455 donated toward the hospitality suite.

Attending the reunion?
Anything else you want us to know:
Please send your answers to Nancy Garfield at NGarf1234@aol.com
And Nancy writes: I've gotten 21 replies so far. Some people are even including photos. I hope that the people who are not attending, as well as those who are attending, will respond. It is a great way to know what others in our class have been doing. As one who didn't have children, it is amazing to see that our classmates have kids in their 20's and 30's -- much less are grandparents! I'm hopeful that others, besides me, will have salt and pepper hair, and other signs of aging. It would be terrible to be the only one, especially given the fact that I think I looked about 15 when I graduated!. I was heartened to read Peter Rosen's note a few weeks ago, saying that while you two weren't really friends in high school, he really enjoyed the opportunity to talk with you. I hope that others will similarly find that opportunity to get to know their former classmates. Meanwhile, I'll keep you posted about our response rate.
00020000064900002254 643,
Also, next notice of the next New York informal gathering:
When: Saturday, April 6th, 2002 1:00 PM
Where: Lily Flanagans, 279 Sunrise Highway, Rockville Centre
Contact: Paul DeMartino: PINA_1@msn.com or 516-799-1590 Or just show up.
Also, Paul's just said these monthly meetings will probably continue after the April reunion.
And Paul just pointed out that the e-mail addresses on the two home pages aren't in sync. He also mentioned I know that you've got a life besides the reunion. Yeah, I do, but the slip on the contact lists was an oversight. The big home page is currently accurate and I temporarily forgot about the other one. I'll try and fix it tonight.
But, first, I have to post 17 new photos, from the February and March New York gatherings. I should have them on-line by tomorrow morning. Nice stuff.
Finally, Marilyn Horowitz Goldhammer just told me what I was actually reading at my bar mitzvah. Turns out to be a detailed description of the temple, and instructions about how to make vestments. Not too far off for a guy who's spent his life designing scenery. Though I never could sew.
