Update 1-27-15

Hi,

To start, I hope the storm that's presently hitting the northeast isn't as bad as the news is making it seem:  "Potentially Historic Blizzard."

Next, one more person has confirmed for the reunion this week, bringing the number to 31.  As I’ve mentioned earlier, another ten-or-so people have said informally that they’re interested, and I’m just waiting for confirmations.

Also, Paulinda Schimmel wrote:  I am so sorry I will not be able to come to the reunion. It’s the same weekend as the Ovarian Cancer Circle's fundraiser at the Comedy Store in West Hollywood, so I need to be there.  But please extend my greetings to all.

In other notes, Andy Dolich wrote:  The correct answers to my sports trivia quiz were:
Chuck Drimal -- quarterback at the University of Maryland.  He also played on national TV, ABC, against the Selmon brothers from Oklahoma.
Pete Blumenthal – wide receiver at Penn.
And I earned my varsity basketball letter sitting on the bench (mostly) at American University.
Also, I know Rich Lobell went to Harvard, but I'm not sure he played varsity soccer there.
By the way, the prize for the correct answer was going to be a week at Casa Fiveson in Panama.

Related, Art Halprin wrote:  Please pass on to Peter Rosen that Jessie Jupiter, from the class of ‘64, played soccer at Brown, so that was what got him.  Again, I don't know why I know this but can't remember where I put my wallet.

Betsy Pottruck mentioned something similar:  Peter Blumenthal most definitely played football at the University of Pennsylvania because he was a teammate and very close friend of my former husband David Pottruck.  Once again, I don't know why I know all this sports stuff, but Chuck Drimal did play for Maryland, and Rich Lobell did go to Harvard.

Peter Shapiro, from the class of ‘62, wrote:  I don't recall the year, but I remember the South High band, of which I was a clarinet-playing member, helped with the grand opening of the theater that will be demolished.  I think the first movie was a showing of Gone with the Wind.  Best regards to all.

[Rich – It was Gone With The Wind, and I think it was 1959, the 30th anniversary of that film.  As I’ve mentioned here before, Jeff Levin and I saw it from the front row, because those were the only seats left.  And I think that theater – the Green Acres Cinema? – was torn down a couple years ago and was replaced by an Olive Garden restaurant.  It’s the multiplex, slightly west of there, that’s about to be demolished.  On Facebook, a number of people note that, especially because of the shootings associated with the multiplex, it’s loss is not to be mourned.]

Peggy Galinger Menaker wrote:  Glad to see that the reunion list is growing.  Kindly change the spelling of my last name to Menaker, with an "A."

[Rich – Yeah:  Spelling.  As has been established previously, Paul Hartman had it right when he tried to teach me English in 11th grade.  He said I had the spelling level of a 5th grader.
Sorry, Peggy.  And if I misspell anyone else’s name, please tell me.  Thanks.]

Jay Berliner asks:  Has there been any thought given to visiting South sometime during the reunion?

[Rich – Barbara Blitfield Pech mentioned that when we were considering locations, and I think if a delegation of folks wants to visit South on Saturday morning or early afternoon, that may be able to be arranged.  Interested people may be able to car pool, and those less interested can stay at the hotel and play golf.  The only snags from South’s end might be finding out whether the building will be open and if there’s someone who can lead a tour.
We may also get a group together to serenade Booker Gibson, if he and his wife Frances can’t get to the reunion Saturday night.]

Irene Saunders Goldstein asks:  Can some intrepid – and valued – volunteer coordinate plans for a Saturday night meal together?

[Rich – Again, that’s something that may be in the works, depending on the number of people attending.  If it stays under 50, we can all have dinner at the hotel restaurant without the need to car pool and drive.  If it starts heading above 50, we may need to find a nearby restaurant or use the back room at the hotel resaurant.  I'm not sure how large that is.
I think Les Glaser mentioned a good local Italian restaurant, and Valerie Nelson Gillen guided us to a good seafood place in 2010.  If we do have dinner in a restaurant Saturday night, rather than try to reserve a room and collect money in advance, another approach would be a series of reservations made in different names and slightly staggered times for tables of 4 to 6 people.  That way, people can more easily choose what they want to pay for and eat.  Still, if we’re going to try this approach, we’ll have to start making the reservations in March, and a lot of that depends on the number of people attending the reunion Saturday night.]

Emily Kleinman Schreiber wrote:  Thanks, Bernie Schiedt.  I loved that 1950s video.  Also, I’ll probably be stopping by one of your reunion parties to say “hello” to you kids.

Jay Berliner also sent the link to a video, noting, This is a tour of the international space station by one of the astronauts on board.  It's 25 minutes long, but very interesting.  Some time earlier, perhaps last year, a shorter version of this was circulated, but this is more comprehensive.   youtube . com/embed/doN4t5NKW-k   (As usual, please remove the spaces.)

Amy Kassak Bentley posted a link on Facebook to a series of 50 pictures of Forest Road School being built in 1952 and ‘53.  You can also see the houses surrounding the future school on their mainly treeless lots.    valleystream . govoffice . com/vertical/Sites/%7BBC0696FB-5DB8-4F85-B451-5A8D9DC581E3%7D/uploads/Combined_construction_photos_and_letters.pdf    (Again, please remove the spaces)

Finally, Marc Jonas sent a link to a fairly long, but very interesting article about the planning of the Green Acres community.  Amy had already gotten permission to post it on the Valley Stream Historical Society web site, so it can be seen there.  I’ll try to copy and paste some of it next week.  Meanwhile, the link is: vsvny . org/index.asp?Type=B_BASIC&SEC={4052239F-691A-4E59-8303-2FD1A2FDD067}
