Update 9-24-13
Hi,
First, a warning. Here's some information about a National Public Radio report on the dangers of Tylenol that ran on "This American Life" last Friday evening: "Use Only as Directed" One of the country's most popular over-the-counter painkillers -- acetaminophen, the active ingredient in Tylenol -- also kills the most people, according to data from the federal government. Over 150 Americans die each year on average after accidentally taking too much. And it requires a lot less to endanger you than you may know. Next, happier news, from Emily Kleinman Schreiber by way of the Alumni Association Bulletin: On July 23rd, I attended the Long Island Film Festival at the Bellmore Theatre. I went to see Bern Cohen, class of ’60, in Miro & Josef, a film in which he has the starring role of Josef. Bern wrote on Facebook that he “plays a mean bastard who abuses his family then gets a stroke and needs their care. No spoilers here.” His description is correct, and I enjoyed seeing him on and off the screen.
Emily adds: Presenting our Alumni Association scholarships each year to our recipients is definitely the feather in my presidential cap. I love looking out from the stage and seeing so many bright students sitting respectfully and being oh so supportive of each other. As I've mentioned before, this year one scholarship was given in memory of Miss Clara Hoogenboom and the other in honor of Mrs. Teresa Margolin Bargman. Mrs. Bargman attended the awards program and was delighted to meet the award recipients, Miguel Sison and Andrew Hess.
Our thank you note from Miguel: The privilege of winning this award is the pinnacle of the accomplishments I have made in my senior year. Thank you so much for recognizing me with this honor. Please extend my most sincere gratitude to the rest of the Alumni Association.
And the one from Andrew: Thank you so much for the scholarship money. It really does mean a lot to me that I was recognized for loving South High School the way I do by an organization that loves it as well. It's really weird that in a few days really, I'll be able to call myself an alumnus of South, too. It was so nice to meet you and Mrs. Margolin Bargman, and it was even nicer to take a picture with both of you. I was so flattered by what both you and she had to say about me and Miguel. Again, thank you so much, and I hope I get to see you at future South events.
Some more 2015 reunion thoughts, from Larry Rugen: 50th reunion -- Go for it. Many people have to travel anyway and may want to combine the party with a few additional vacation days. A cruise sounds good. Out of Fort Lauderdale is great idea, but don’t forget out of New York, too, heading toward New England and Canada during the fall. Land destinations could be: Estes Park, Colorado, in late September, to see elk and the Rockies, orBranson, Missouri -- It’s Showtime! Branson has plenty of meeting places and is more reasonably priced than a cruise
Larry also sent the link to this video -- Little Red Wagon -- commenting, "I want one." The link:

Finally, an update from Amy Miller Cohen about the class of 63's 50th reunion: As of September 20th, we have 42 paid reservations for our party. We have room for 8 more people, so if you've been uncertain about attending, it's not too late to contact me.
Here's the breakdown of the 30 classmates, 2 alum from other classes, and 10 spouses who will be there. The spouses are noted with a (+) following our classmates' names.
Enid Stern, Richard Stern (+), Amy Miller Cohen (+), Gail Kimmel Potash (+), Linda Bazerman Blank, Caryl Snapperman Avery (+), Bill Figlozzi, Bill Puka, Judy Birken Gertler, Neil Silver (+), Mell Lewis, Beth Dee Licht, Debbie Tolkoff Cohen (+), Toby Cogen Rudolph (+), Karen Hart Lowenstein (+), Roger Pascal, Miriam Reyes, Sherry Sweeny Sawchak, Joan Arnay Halperin, Janet Weeks Rawe (and her sister and alum Barbara Weeks Adams), Rich Sternhell (class of '64), Diane Simon Tuinjnga, Agnes Coby Weeks, Nancy Fishman Kaminsky, Bill Zuckerman (+), Bevery Gordon Green, Helen Maloney Emlock, Karen Morgenroth Welkis (+), Linda Schluter McBride, Karen Kain Bachmann, and John Pfeffer.
That would be: 3 Bills, 3 Karens, 5 Cohens, 3 Richards, and 3 Stern/Sternhells.
Dress for the reunion is your choice. Jeans are fine, but some folks will be dressing up. If you still have your poodle skirt, your JV / Varsity / Greek or service club sweaters, please take them out and bring them along for the memorabilia table -- but only if they don't smell of moth balls! And bring any memorabilia you want to share, but put your name on it, so your item gets back to you.
If you still have your 1963 yearbook and want more people to sign it, bring it along. Bring photos. (And thanks, Helen, for mentioning that you'll bring your extra set of photos from the 25th reunion.)
Bring anecdotes or poems you've written about our school years, about aging, or about yourself or your philosophy of life. Bring your toasts and good wishes. Come hungry because there'll be lots of good food and beverages. There'll also be a cash bar
