Update 11-26-13

Hi,

So I'm looking at this postcard/flier reading "Save The Date, Jewish Sports Hall of Fame NC Induction Gala," thinking "Why the hell did I get this?" when I realize the young-looking, gray-haired guy in the first picture is Andy Dolich.  Yeah, I would have realized his name is right under his picture, but I have a cold.
The gala is at the Four Seasons in San Francisco on Sunday, April 13, 2014.  Cocktails are at 5:00, dinner's at six, and the card promises you'll be out of there at 8:30.  The NC in the title stands for Northern California, and this is the eighth year of the awards.
If you're interested in celebrating Andy and four other recipients -- Debbie Meyer, a multiple, gold-medal winning Olympic swimmer; Claude Rosenberg, a philanthropist; and Dolph and Danny Schayes, also a multiple award winning, father and son team of professional basketball players -- contact the Northern California Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.  408-374 -1600.  Or jshofnc . org/induction (remove the spaces.)  For the record:  Danny Schayes is 6'-11".  Dolph is 6'-7".  Andy is somewhat shorter.

From Lynn Nudleman Villagran:  Who would have thought 50 years ago that many of us would still be in contact today?
50 years ago, President Kennedy died.  I was in the hallway returning from the office while classes were in session.  The hallways were mostly empty, but someone told me the President had been shot.  I walked into Miss Lawrence's class, to sit down in my seat behind Martha Morenstein.  Martha said I looked as white as a ghost.  I told her what I had heard.  Miss Lawrence asked why we were talking, and Martha told her what I had said.  Shortly after that, the announcement came over the PA system.  Miss Lawrence turned her back to the classroom and softly sobbed.
Where were you?  I'm sure people remember.

[Rich -- I was in Lillian Hardy's history class when the PA clicked on as if by accident, "...was shot in Dallas..." was heard, then the system abruptly clicked off.  We quickly figured out who was in Dallas and whose news would be important enough to interrupt class, then the PA system must have come back on and we all listened.  But Kennedy was shot at 1:30 our time, and his death wasn't announced till 2:30.  So I don't know if we were held in our classes till the announcement and then dismissed or if students were sent home before his death was confirmed.]

In a lighter note, following up Marc Jonas's question last week about Eddie Kilroy, Amy Kassak Bentley wrote:  I'm in touch with Dee Kilroy, South ’72, on Facebook.  Eddie went to Holy Name of Mary and then to Archbishop Molloy High School.  The Kilroys lived on Darewood Lane, and Eddie was in a band that played at the local dances.

And Marc wrote:  I'll be darned.  I haven't lost it all, yet. Thanks, Amy.

Marc also adds:  Alan Finder visited Barry Cohen at his home outside Hartford, Connecticut, years ago.  Barry owned and ran two women’s dress shops, Alan believes, in the Hartford suburbs.  And possibly Barry's father was a dress manufacturer.

[Rich -- I know there are several people from South who've long lived in the Hartford area.  Anyone remember meeting Barry?]

Finally, from Jerry Bittman:  It was nice to hear from old Les Glasser.  Les lives near St. Augustine, trying to find The Fountain of Youth.  For some odd reason, I don't think that Les approves of holding the 50th reunion in Nebraska.  He did say that the next time he was in Cornball, Nebreska, he would call.  So let me entice you all on what we can do in CORNBALL.
Everybody knows that the average temperature here is 50 below, and we use our land to grow corn, not to play golf.  So for recreation, we invented CORNBALL.  It's played on the kitchen table.  In the middle of the table, you build a 4-inch high mound of mashed potatoes and scoop out the top, so it looks like a Volcano. It's our indoor version of golf.  Instead of hitting a golf ball, you strike a kernel of corn.  Instead of using a golf club, you use a pea pod.  Then all the corn is gathered together, and we sell you people ethanol.  So next time you put gas in your cars, remember good old Cornball, NE.

[Rich -- I think, just for that, we should have the reunion in Jerry's kitchen.]

And Jerry adds:  That was my best Paul Harvey impersonation.  I need to continue typing, or else I'll eat. And, yesterday I attained my goal of starting my 100th diet of 2013.  Some more FYI regarding Cornball and Nebraska:
The number one new show on TV this year is Blacklist.  Jon Bokenkamp, the creator, executive producer, and sometimes writer for the show is from and still lives here in Cornball.
The greatest late night talk show host, Johnny Carson, was from Nebraska.
One of the all time great actors, Henry Fonda, was from here.
Randy Rasmussen, from the New York Jets Super Bowl Champions, played college football here in Cornball.
Those are just a few famous Nebraskans, along with Dawn Wells from Gilligan's Island.  So my classmates, with the exception of Buddy Hackett, Steve Buscemi, Ed Kranepool, and Neil Guberman, name me one other great entertainer or athlete that came from New York.  Though Chuck Drimal should have been a Super Bowl Quarterback.
FYI -- Last week on November 14th, we had a  murder.  It was the first homicide here since 2008.  How many places go 5 years between murders?
FYI -- All of our country's nukes are controlled here in Nebraska, so you better not knock Nebraska.
FYI -- Nebraska, along with 2 other Midwestern states, rank in the top 3 for life longevity.
FYI -- 5,000 years from now, Nebraska will be a coastal state.

And Happy Thanksgiving to everyone, and Happy Chanukah to those who celebrate.
