Update 7-29-14
Hi,
First, a note I misplaced last week, from Paul DeMartino: I took mechanical drawing, and I think it was taught by Mr. Kana. It taught me 3-dimensional drawing, and I continue to use this skill when sketching out woodworking projects at home. I don't believe there was a plastics shop, but I think there was an automotive shop class.
[Rich -- Nancy Garfield and I took drafting senior year, in different classes but both taught by a new, probably 21-year-old teacher, Richard Furziger. I used to irritate him by introducing as my kid brother -- he was about Nancy's height. To balance that, Pop Kana irritated me by telling stories about growing up on the farm when he was supposed to be teaching pre-engineering. But I've got to admit, he told funny stories.]
Jeanie DeGennaro Utter asked if the mention last week of Helen David was about "Helen David, the science teacher?" Jeanie added, "I remember her vividly."
[Rich -- I'm hoping Jeanie got in touch with Helen, who I assured Jeanie was "Very friendly." And I'm hoping Helen and her husband are OK, because they live in Sun City, and nearby Phoenix just got hit by a huge dust storm.]
Meanwhile, in greener Massachusetts, Naomi Stein Miller reported that Dolores Stein -- who's no blood relation to Naomi but a long-time friend -- is still living comfortably on her own in Great Barrington at 96. She has a bit of a problem hearing, and she's given up driving, but she's otherwise fine. Many of us who went to Forest Road School had Dolores as a teacher for 4th or 5th grade, and I think a few people had her both years.
Near Dolores in western Massachusetts, Mary Sipp-Green is about to beam at copies of her soon-to-be published book chronicling much of her artwork. So get your copies as soon as you can. They should be available online.
Not far away from Mary, in eastern Pennsylvania, Amy Miller Cohen -- no relation to Naomi -- has 2 books of her own about to go into publication. One is about the Soul Collages she uses in her therapy work.
A bit east of Amy, Richard Sternhell, Marc Jonas, and I had lunch last month in a restaurant in a house that's probably been there since the Revolution.
Not quite as old, in eastern upstate New York, today is Jeff Levin's birthday. South again and nearer the coast, Wednesday is Naomi's birthday. I assurred her that she isn't an old woman, citing Dolores Stein as a better example of that. And other people obviously have birthdays that I don't note, but Jeff and Naomi's are 2 of about 5 I still remember from growing up.
On this coast, Judy Hartstone and I had lunch last Thursday, exploring the 6th -- I think -- restaurant in Ventura, California. This one we plan to go to again, as opposed to the last one, which had an overpriced -- 14 buck -- glop of tiramisu that I think was sculpted by Richard Dreyfuss in Close Encounters.
Back on the East coast, Liz King Giordano forwarded photos of this year's Booker Gibson and Vince Tampio scholarship recipients, and I'll forward the files soon to Stu Borman for posting on the class site -- along with the 2 photos I promised to send him last week.
Speaking of Booker, when Emily Kleinman Schreiber was visiting a couple of weeks ago, she mentioned that Booker could be doing better. So if anyone wants to send him a Get Well Immediately card, please write me for his address.
Finally, I woke up this morning with this in my head: “Fab washes clean, clear through, and deodorizes, too.” But rather than feeling nostalgic or even proud of my memory, I felt like Alan Strang, the horse-blinding kid in Equus. So watch out Silver. And Buttermilk. And Trigger.
