Update 4-8-14

Hi,

First, again thanks to everyone who helped support the Booker Gibson / Vince Tampio scholarships this year.  As soon as Liz King Giordano has the names of this year's recipients, I'll pass on the names.

Next, in order they were received, some notes from former class of '65 members about next year's reunion:

From Allen Moss:  Moss in Maine here.  I am certainly interested in attending, and I definitely vote for a known quantity such as the hotel in Hauppauge, especially with its reasonable price per night.  We have been there, and we know how well the facilities suited us.  When you start adding up the totals, potentially the 50th could cost a Falcon way over $600 if you consider some of the higher priced hotels.  And this does not include folks who have to fly in to the area.
Meanwhile, in Maine, we are coming out of one of the coldest and snowiest winters.  It has been quite an experience, but I am ready for spring!  Hope all is well with everyone.

Next, from Ira Levy:  I wanted to confirm my attendance to our 50th class reunion, and I look forward to seeing everyone and catching up.  Until then, all the best.

From Les Glasser:  If you're thinking about the Garden City Hotel, you had better be thinking a lot more money than $45 per person for a buffet.  Two nights at the hotel with all meals is close to $1000 per couple.  Also, here's a crazy thought -- the Montauk Yacht Club.  April would be off-season and have good rates.  But it's probably a little tough to get out to if you're flying in.

From Marilyn Horowitz Goldhammer:  I will be there!

From Peter Rosen:  Count me in for the reunion wherever it is.  I will save my suggestions until we know the expected attendance.

From Mary Sipp Green:  I'm writing about the reunion.  I'm planning on coming.  I won't need a room, or drinks, but would like to do the Saturday night dinner.  Hauppauge was a good place if people can get there from the airports.  There's the MacArthur Airport in Islip which I've used traveling to Florida, but I don't know the airline's other routes.  Best regards.

From Valerie Nelson Gillen:  I plan on attending the reunion but probably will not need hotel room.

From Bernie Scheidt:   I plan on attending and would prefer to travel further and spend less.  I would assume many of us, as I am, are retired and living on fixed incomes.

From Barbara Brill:  Please count me in.  Looking forward to it.

From Stu Borman:  Thanks for excluding drinks from the cost.  I support that.  Also, are spouses invited?  And in some areas, alternative hotel and B&B accommodations may be available.  Is it OK for individuals to consider housing alternatives, instead of staying in the "official" reunion hotel?  Bottom line -- I'm interested.

From Art Halprin:  Since I have gone to most, if not all, of the reunions, I would plan to attend the 50th.  The supposed prices sound fine.  I think that if the hotel is much more than $200 per night, it would be difficult to attract a large crowd of folks from outside the area.

From Irene Saunders Goldstein:  If you haven't already, check out Priceline . com and ask for 10+ rooms.  It's an interesting process that, when I gave the destinations Valley Stream, Brooklyn, Queens, and Hauppauge, returned some interesting possibilities for hotels.  I asked for 3-5 stars, banquet space for 100, under $300 per room, good public transportation, and a restaurant and bar on the premises.  It might be interesting to see what Manhattan hotels show up on a list.  Hope all's well.  Jerry and I look forward to attending.

From Marc Goldberg:  Well, I guess I will come if I am absolutely forced to.  I have not gone to a reunion since the 20th year, simply because everyone looked so old.  I hope that will not be the case this time.  I just know this is a big mistake, but add me to your list.

From Peggy Cooper Schwartz:  The hotel in Hauppauge where we had 2 of our last 3 reunions was large and near the airport in Islip.  I'm lucky since Southwest flies there non-stop from West Palm Beach.  I think we should lock in a location soon.  Also, as far as I know, Jeryl Monsees is coming, too.  We're still best girlfriends and speak often.

[Rich -- That's reactions from 15 people, about 10 percent of those on the present class mailing list.  But it might not be a representative sample, so we really could use some more opinions.  They don't need to be commitments, just opinions.  Thanks.  And, yeah, people don't need to stay at one hotel, and husbands, wives, and other guests are welcome.]

And in some accumulated news of the class of 64's October 50th reunion:  first, $45 plus $25 is $70, not $75.  Apologies for that and for mis-typing its as it's a couple weeks ago.  The class of '64 has about 75 former classmates interested in coming to their reunion, and 15 of them are bringing guests.  That's a nice turnout, and the number is growing.

From Tom McPartland, class of '64:  This week, I set up a block of rooms at the hotel.  The base rate is $162, and the block is listed under Valley Stream South reunion.  To reserve a room, call the hotel directly between 9 AM and 5 PM EDT time.  631-232-4623.  Ask for Eric.
Also, I sent out over 60 hard copy invitations to alumni I tracked through People Search and Anywho . com.  It takes time looking up and researching the missing alumni, and I have a lot to go.  On our latest list, I also tagged the alumni who have not responded since we started the reunion search process.

From Bette Silver, '64:  Tom, you are great at these updates.  Thank you.  We should all reach out to people if we see their information listed.  Let's keep tracking these people down!  Come on everyone!  Gibson area is starting to get a turnout!  Quite a few people have sent in the $45 we first proposed as the price, but we added the cocktail hour for $25 per person, so please send another check to cover the difference.  All of these are cash bar, so keep that in mind.  These prices cover all the food for the night and the ballroom for the party.  Keep it coming so we get a HUGE turnout!

The class of '64 reunion details:  Friday, October 10, 2014.  Cocktails: 6 - 7.  Buffet: 7 - 11.  $70 per person.  Cash bar at both the cocktail hour and buffet.  Hyatt Regency, Hauppague, New York.  Committee phone numbers:  Tom McPartland  570-223-2577.  Ken Silver: 631-463-2217.  Bette Silver: 631-463-2216.

The class of '65  50th Reunion dates:  April 24 through April 26, 2015
