Update 12-3-13
Hi,
Pretty much the end up the backed-up mail from the last month. There were a couple of other notes and forwarded web site links that I deleted because they were no longer topical.
From Irene Saunders Goldstein: Barry Cohen's father -- Ralph Cohen, if I remember correctly -- owned a local clothing manufacturing company known as R.C.Quinn. I spent a fair amount of time and moneyy at his factory during the Madras phase of our lives. Racks and racks of beautiful cotton plaid shirts, pants, and dresses. Very cool!
I also remember enjoying Stu Borman's dry sense of humor. He _always made be laugh -- except on one November day. During seventh period French class, the PA crackled, and Stu exclaimed, "The President's been shot!" I remember being amazed that he would say such a thing, and I stage whispered, "Stuart Borman! Don't even joke about that!" Moments later, we all knew it was no joke.
From Jay Berliner: Is it true that Nebraska ranks in the top three states for life longevity, or does it seem that way?
From Valerie Nelson Gillen: The Garden City Hotel is a very lovely place. I have gone to Christmas parties there. It can be pricey, but sometimes, you can get a good deal.
From Eric Hilton: My wife and I spent time with Eddie Kilroy and his wife last week at his home in Kissimmee, Florida. Eddie and I were in the band together and played at many South and Central parties. We also played many Valley Stream dances and concerts at the pool and on the village green. Eddie is still singing at different venues.
A question: About Steve Klain, if that's how you spell his last name. He lived on Jasmine Lane and went to Forest Road School until he vanished maybe around fourth grade. Does anyone know where he went? Ditto about Donald Faggen -- and not Donald Fagen from "Steely Dan."
Word that someone was briefly in touch with Bill Shine over the summer but has lost track of him again. But Bill's living in Georgia.
From Barbara Blitfield Pech, from the Five Towns Facebook page: After 49 years, Woodro has a "for lease' sign in the window, with exchanged comments that they are relocating because of "landlord problems," and additional notes that insiders know that Max is done... tired, etc. Additional notes mentioned $24.00 a pound for salty roast beef, and no decor updates in years. But some good news -- Wall's is still going strong and will FedEx orders anywhere.
From Allen Moss: I am in the middle of reading Billy Crystal's new autobiography called Still Foolin' Em and, without a doubt, it is a "piss in your pants" masterpiece. For anyone who likes the Woody Allen/Joan Rivers style of writing which includes hyperbolic imagery and outrageous statements, this is the book for you. The great thing is that the book is also a very warm and loving account of his growing up in Long Beach, New York among his crazy relatives. It also is a journal of his rise to stardom with all the failures and successes along the way.
I heard him interviewed by Terry Gross on National Public Radio's "Fresh Air," and I was already calling my library to reserve the book. This is truly a wonderful account of "one of us Baby Boomers" reaching his 65th birthday and looking back and ahead with all the accompanying pleasures, regrets and fears. It is truly a treat.
Finally, a suggestion has been made that a separate link be set up for times when “life happens,” and we need an additional ear or shoulder. There are times when it is recognized that a health issue may be occurring, but we don’t know what kind of doctor to see or -- if a diagnosis has been made -- finding someone with the same diagnosis who may have tips on how to make life a little easier. This wouldn’t be a chat room that has to be replied to on a continuous basis, just something that is available if needed. So many advances are being made in medicine these days that one person may be on a medication that others are not aware of. This would just be a way of sharing different experiences with life.
