Update 3-3-15

Hi,

I was a little worried about trying to raise the annual Gibson / Tampio scholarship money while at the same helping to organize the 50th reunion, but both seem to be going smoothly.
$325 came in for the scholarships this week, adding to the $300 we already had.  That leaves $375 to go.  Not bad, and again thanks to everyone who’s contributed.
If you’d like to help out, please send your checks to:  Rich Eisbrouch, 23030 Dolorosa Street, Woodland Hills, California  91367.  The checks should be made out to me, and please indicate in the bottom left corner which scholarship you'd like to support, or if you'd prefer your donation be split between the two.  Also, as Ed Albrecht mentioned, “When everyone contributes a little, it turns into a lot.”

As to the reunion, several other people said they’re coming:  one member of the former class of ‘65 and one more brave spouse.  That brings the total to 33, plus 5 spouses and at least one guest.

From Jay Tuerk:  Just wanted you to know I will be attending the reunion.  I’ll be there Saturday overnight and Sunday.  Looking forward to seeing everyone.

And from Peggy Cooper Schwartz:  My husband, Les Schwartz, will also be joining me at the reunion.

In other notes, Carmine DeSanto praised Vince Tampio:  Vince was an exceptional educator, and I totally enjoyed my South days in his public speaking class.  He was always upbeat and a concerned teacher who helped many students.  As a math instructor, I often rely on his public speaking techniques.  One year, he also convinced me to participate in a play, and that was a highlight of my time at South.

Amy Kassak Bentley praised Irene Saunders Goldstein:  Did you know that Irene Saunders Goldstein is an editor of the very well-respected journal, "Avotaynu," a quarterly publication on Jewish genealogy?  She also helps other genealogists write and  polish their family histories.  Just last night, I read a piece she wrote in the latest issue.  She even mentioned going to the class of 65's last reunion in 2010.  I don't know her, but when I read the newsletter today, I saw her name, and when I got home, I checked the journal to confirm that the name was the same.  It was, so I’ve attached the article.  There’s even a photo of her with her soon-to-be husband.  The story is entitled "Love and Genealogy."

Mary Sipp Green praised Paulinda Schimmel:  I received this information about an event in Los Angeles honoring Paulinda Schimmel, and thought I would pass it along. .Paulinda's hard work and great contributions to this important cause are priceless.  In a nutshell... she's amazing.
You are cordially invited to join the West Hollywood Women's Advisory Board and the West Hollywood Chamber of Commerce for the 20th Anniversary of the annual Women in Leadership Awards and Reception on Wednesday, March 25, 2015, from 6 PM to 8 PM at Phyllis Morris, 655 North Robertson Boulevard., West Hollywood, California 90069.  Join us as we honor the outstanding contributions of:  Sandra Fluke, Barbara Hamaker, Paulinda Schimmel, Vivian B. Seigel, and Sara Sugarman.  RSVP: 323-848-6823.  Your 15 dollar donation and all event proceeds will benefit the West Hollywood Youth Scholarship Fund.

And the AOL Reporter praised Evelyn Roedel Read:   Yesterday, Evelyn Read, a 73-year-old retired first grade teacher, celebrated reaching 40 months with stage 4 lung cancer.  She was diagnosed 6 years ago.  Mrs. Read, a non-smoker, had no symptoms of lung cancer.
Not willing to give up, Mrs. Read began to research all alternative methods from non-FDA approved Ozone treatments – for 16 months: they didn't work – to supplements.  The supplements may have contributed to her living beyond the usual survival time, which gave her more time to continue her research.
She began chemo at MD Anderson in Texas in June, 2013.  After 6 rounds of double chemo with "minimal response", she continues with just Alimta for maintenance every 4 weeks, along with her growing list of supplements.
One year ago, she added 4 mushroom supplements to her list, and three months later, on a May 30th, 2014 PET/CT scan, her cancer had reversed itself.  The two largest tumors had gotten smaller, and the metabolic rate of the cancer growth had slowed down.  This improved even more on the October 17th and February 1st scan.s  “It takes a bit of work to fill my pill holders with all the supplements I take,” she says, “but living is so worth it.  If anyone wants more information on my approach, I’ll gladly share it.”

Unrelated, Zelda White Nichols wrote:  Unfortunately, my computer crashed a few weeks ago.  Did I back it up?  Not that I remember.  So anyone who'd like to be added back into my e-address book, could you please send me your contact information?  Thanks.  Computers are great when they work.

Unrelated to that, Judy Hartstone notes:  I was tempted to buy a red and gray dog bed for my dog, Jolie, because of the colors, of course, and it prompted the thought:  Can any of us former Falcons say "Red and gray" without our brains completing the phrase, "They're okay!"

[Rich – I had to ask for context for this.  I recognized that it was a cheer, but when I was involved in sports at South – in 8th and 9th grades, helping Ralph Foster manage his soccer and track teams – there weren’t any crowds or cheerleaders.  Judy confirmed that it was something she probably learned while attending pep rallies or varsity basketball games.  She added, “I  have this image and memory of swishing noises of red-and-gray crepe paper pom-poms being waved enthusiastically by the cheerleaders, and everyone shouting.”]

Finally, at this point there’d be another portion of that Green Acres history piece or an excerpt from Irene Saunders Goldstein’s genealogy article.  But Allen Moss just sent something funnier, so those other pieces can wait.  It might also be noted that no one tried to find Bill Brady this week.

Forwarded by Allen:  The Federal Government just announced Medicare Part G – Nursing Home Plan.  If you're a senior citizen and can no longer take care of yourself, the government says there's no nursing home care available.  So what do you do?  Opt for Part G.
Our plan gives anyone 65 years or older a gun (Part G) and four bullets.  You're allowed to shoot four politicians.  This means, of course, you'll be sent to prison, where you'll receive three meals a day, a roof over your head, central heating and air conditioning, cable TV, a library, and all the health care you need.
Need new teeth?  No problem.  New glasses?  That's great.  Need a hearing aid, a new hip, knees, kidneys, lungs, heart, or a sex change?  All covered.  As an added bonus, your kids can come and visit you at least as often as they do now.  And who'll be paying for this?  The same government that told you they can't afford for you to go into a home.  Plus, you can get rid of 4 useless politicians while you're at it.   And because you're a prisoner, you don't have to pay any income tax.
Is this a great country or what?
Blue Cross will also be offering a supplementary plan that covers the cost of 4 additional bullets.

The class of '65 50th Reunion:  Friday, April 24 through Sunday, April 26, 2015, Hyatt Regency, Hauppauge.

To make a hotel reservation:  Go online and search out Hyatt Regency, Hauppauge.  With an AAA card, an AARP membership, or using several other organizational connections, you can get the lowest price.  You can also cancel the reservation if you need to.
