Update 9-17-13

Hi,

First, some good news from Linda Cohen Greenseid:  I started Sunday at Forest Road School, watching my grandson play soccer, and ended with a text from my son.  Last night, at the Creative Emmy Awards, Jamie won an Emmy for doing prosthetic makeup on Debbie Reynolds to make her look like Liberace's mother in Behind The Candelabra.  This was Jamie's 4th nomination and 2nd win.  I am incredibly happy for him, since special effects makeup was all he ever wanted to do since he was 14-years-old.  It's  wonderful to be recognized by your peers.

[Rich -- Jamie Kelman is the son of Linda and Rob Kelman, both class of '65.  Congratulations all.]

Next, a note from Amy Kassak Bently:  Thank you, Andy, for filling me in about Carol and Natalie Lagin.  And now I remember why the name Dolich was so familiar.

A remembrance from Barbara Blitfield Pech:  My cousin Mike took many photos of the former World Trade Center site on 9-11-13.  Mike was in the towers on 9-11-2001 and with divine guidance and blessing fortunately got out.  Along with my thoughts, the photos are just another reminder of how fragile life is.  We must all take time for each other, ourselves, and to stop and smell the roses.  And may we all know a lifetime of peace, amongst ourselves and throughout the world.

The link to a 5-minute German travelogue, forwarded by Larry Rugen.  Larry notes:  This is where we spent 3+ years, and we try to return when we can.  Hope people enjoy it.  youtube . com / watch?v=FafGKqMxRo0

Another cultural note, from Eric Gordon, which may interest a few people:  Shmuel Polonski's 1931 Yiddish songbook "Far Yognt / For Youth" is coming to CD.  We have inked the vocalists who will share their talents -- Michael Alpert, Judy Bressler, Jack “Yankl” Falk, Daniel Kahn, Vira Lozinsky, Anthony Russell, and Elizabeth Schwartz.  Every one of them is a top name in Yiddish music.  We plan to record in late 2013, with a completion date of early 2014.  The booklet will include the complete translations by Hershl Hartman and transliterations to help people sing along.

A consideration, from Peggy Cooper Schwartz:  In regards to the 50th reunion of the class of '65 -- the hotel in Hauppauge where we held our 45th and 37th seemed to work nicely, though having the event at a hotel near JFK or LaGuardia also seems to make sense.  Maybe for something a little different, holding the party at a resort in Orlando might be fun.  It's easy to fly there from anywhere.  Or what about a 5-or-7-day cruise out of Fort Lauderdale?  The terminal is right at the airport, and all the major lines have cruises leaving from there 12-months-a-year now.

[Rich -- Again, I'm in no hurry to be 68, but all these are certainly possibilities.  One thing to consider is we want to see how many people we can interest, so we need to keep initial plans affordable.  But once we find out who actually plans to come, we can see what we can all spend.]

A question from Amy Kassak Bentley:  In a previous newsletter, Judy Hartstone wrote, "Woodland Road dead-ended in a swamp.  Also, just north of the Damson Lane dead end was a pond."  I'm paraphrasing Judy’s words, but I've looked at old maps and can find no evidence of the swamp or a pond on the perimeter of the old section of Green Acres.  Can anyone help me find these former bodies of water?

Amy also adds:  Clear Stream Pond -- a Brooklyn waterworks reservoir -- was located north of Merrick Road and was eventually filled in, I think the 1950s.  Now, it's Arlington Park, formerly called Duffy’s Park, but it retained its original triangular shape.  Clear Stream Pond was attached to a stream that went north and south of the pond.  The south stream cut through what became Green Acres and joined the creek that's behind Riverdale Road.  That creek ends abruptly, and I never could understand why.  Now I know -- the stream was filled in from the bend on Riverdale Road, all the way north to Arlington Park.
I thought perhaps the Clear Stream creek was related to the swamp and pond that Judy referred to, but, after consulting a map, I see that Clear Stream creek ran too far west of the old section.  Does anyone have more information on this?

Some observations and a question from a different Amy, Amy Miller Cohen, who's doing some writing for the upcoming class of '63 reunion:  I went to Clearstream Elementary school for kindergarten and first and second grades, until our new Forest Road School opened.  But Joan Arnay, Charles Bienenstein, Richie Schwartz, Linda Schluter, MaryEllen Scaglione, Helen Maloney, Marggie Kushla, Bill Puka, Marie Reale, Susan Sherwood, and others stayed at Clearsteam through sixth grade and then went through South with us.  Maybe when South was built the district redrew the lines for Central, since my sister went to Memorial and Central until her senior year in the fall of 1957, when she started at South with me.  Though Joan said that at some point the kids in her area stopped going to South.  Does anyone know anything about this?
