Hi,
First, obviously, the reunion’s this weekend. We have about 40 people coming, and it should be a lot of fun. If you suddenly decide to stop by, we’ll be in the restaurant just off the hotel lobby starting at 6 PM, both Friday and Saturday nights. Saturday, during the day, and Sunday morning, people may just be hanging out.
My phone number is: 818-667-5271
If that doesn’t work, Dennis Shapiro’s phone number is: 516-395-6936
Using one of those numbers, you should be able to reach us. These numbers and several other people’s cell phone numbers will also be temporarily listed online on the class of ‘65 site. That address, as usual, is: reunionclass65 . blogspot . com (please remove the spaces) The phone numbers are the first entry
The latest addition, from Rosemary Mercurio: I just found out about the reunion from Joan Aries Clevin. I’m interested in going, but the only night I can is Friday, April 24th. Hope to see you all then.
The latest regret, from Barnet Kellman: I'm very disappointed that I can't make the reunion, but I send my love to all.
Also, from Emily Ferber Sondheimer: Sorry to miss the reunion, but we'll be out of the country. Regards to everyone.
And from Marc Jonas: My brother Jeff's wedding in Del Mar, California, will prevent my attendance at the reunion. Best to all my fellow Falcons.
An important question from Les Glasser: Please send me the name and address of the hotel. I thought it was the Marriot Windwatch but that's now a Hyatt Regency. There's also an Islandia Marriot.
[Rich – As I wrote Les: Yep, the old Marriot Windwatch is now the Hyatt Regency. It’s the same hotel we used for our 37th and 45th reunions, just with a different name and part of a different chain. It’s now:
Hyatt Regency Long Island, 1717 Motor Parkway, Hauppauge, New York, USA, 11788]

[Rich – On a related subject, here's the note I sent to Evelyn Roedel Read last Wednesday about the proposed Irving Saffrin Science Scholarship:
I just spoke with Liz King Giordano, the scholarship coordinator at South. A fast question: are you comfortable with this being a scholarship in Irving Saffrin's name which can be awarded to any graduating senior who has excelled in science or plans to major in it in college? Liz thinks it would be hard to pin the award specifically to a biology major.
Liz also said she can get the scholarship request on the agenda for the school board meeting in mid May, so if the board approves the scholarship -- and there's little reason the board wouldn't -- it can start to be awarded this June. That would be great. Please let me know your thoughts about the award criteria . Thanks.]

Evelyn wrote back: I think that any student going into science or even some branch of teaching would be in line to earn a scholarship with Mr. Saffrin's name associated with it.
I taught a lot of "science" to my first graders in 34 years. We planted seeds yearly in compost that we obtained from the Holtsville Ecology Site. I had yearly pole bean contests to see whose bean reached the top of the pole first to get the "Green Thumb Award." Every morning, the children ran to the window to see how tall their plants had grown from the previous day. Jack and the Beanstalk became more "possible.”
We also hatched chicken, duck, and peahen eggs in our classroom. I had a mini farm at home on my two acres and brought in baby goats, turkeys, chickens, and rabbits. We saw chickens lay their eggs right before our eyes and heard them cackle at their proud moment. We felt the fresh and still warm eggs. My pet turkey came to school in November and spent the day in a mesh playpen. Classes came down, one at a time, and learned how the farmer had to teach the baby turkeys how to eat by putting shiny marbles in the feed. They pecked at the shine, and their beaks slipped off the marble into the food. Dinner.
So much of my enthusiasm came from the leadership of Mr. Saffrin, so it's good to know that we can honor him.

[Rich – Another supporter wrote in, offering to support the scholarship for an additional year, so now we have three full years. This supporter preferred to remain anonymous. Since I told Liz King Giordano we’d like to promise five years of the scholarship, that means we’ll have two additional years to raise money for when the times comes. But since we’ve been successful with the Booker Gibson and Vince Tampio scholarship fundraising, I think we can add in a third award.
The donations clearly don’t have to be as big as these two. Most of our donations range between $25 and $50. I was also asked if the scholarships were set up as a 501 [c] [3] so the donations would be tax deductible. As I’ve said before, we aren't a registered charity. When we started these awards, several of the accountants in our class investigated setting up a charity. But the scholarships are relatively small, and so are the donations -- it's just a group of old friends sending a little money back to their old school -- so creating a charity seemed unnecessary.
Still, I can write a letter saying how much a person has donated toward the scholarships. Other people have used these letters to take a deduction.

One more note: I just sent the checks for the 2015 Booker Gibson and Vince Tampio scholarships to Liz King Giordano. She sent me the names today. I should be sending her an additional check, for the Irving Saffrin scholarship, in mid May.]
Finally, it's supposed to be cool and clear this weekend on Long Island. Sounds terrific.
