Update 12-10-13

Hi,

Several short notes and a longer one.

From Linda Cohen Greenseid, replying to Allen Moss:  I live in Lido Beach, next door to Long Beach, and Billy Crystal was very generous to our communities after Hurricane Sandy.  He made some free ads this past summer from the beach, telling everyone to "Come on down," and he rented the Lynbrook movie theater to show his new movie for free to Sandy victims.  He also stood up on the stage and did a little comedy for the folks before the show, to lift their spirits.
My brother Steve was at Nassau Community College with Billy, in the theater department.  Steve was friends with Billy and his wife, Janice.  When Billy went into movies and TV, my brother went into theater, eventually becoming Associate Producer for Joseph Papp at the New York Shakespeare Festival.  Steve and Billy still run into each other from time-to-time, and Billy comes to Long Beach to see his brother Joel, who still lives here.

From Ray Staley:  I'm a  little behind in reading my newsletters, as I just read the one from October 1st.  But if it's not too late to vote on the reunion date, I'm all for April 2015.

[Rich -- That's when the reunion is planned.]

From Ed Albrecht:  Great idea for sharing experiences about health and medicine.  My wife, Louise -- not my primary doctor -- told me that Plavax and Prilosec conflict.  Louise is a Dr. Oz follower, and she explained that doctors are not always up on what medicines conflict.  So you need to be on the ball yourself.

[Rich -- We can initially pass medical information though the newsletter, and if the information expands, we can set up another address or use a group on Facebook.
Also, if you haven't already, do a quick Internet search on the danger of Tylenol (acetaminophen).  It turns out a very few pills daily can start to damage your liver.]

Finally, if you live in the San Francisco area, and you've ever wanted to take a course at Stanford, this might be the time to do it -- especially if you'd like to be taught by Andy Dolich.

Mastering Marketing:  The Super Bowl at 50:  The Game That Changed Sports Marketing  (Business 137)

In 1960, the upstart American Football League began competing with the established National Football League for drafted college players.  By 1966, the two leagues agreed to merge and initiate a championship game.  The Super Bowl game has evolved, the stage and audience have enlarged, and the media hype surrounding the event has exploded exponentially.  The game has turned into an unofficial national holiday.

The course will track the historical evolution of this event and relate the lessons learned to other sports and business situations.  Learning from the experiences of guest speakers, we will build insights regarding the relationships of product and customer, marketing, and desires.  Who were the visionaries who saw the potential of crowning a champion from two competing leagues?  How did this single annual event become the focal point of sports media and marketing? -- a spectacle that is watched by some more for the commercials than the game itself.  The awarding of the 50th Super Bowl game in 2016 to the Bay Area -- which will be played in Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara -- represents an incredible case study of 21st-century marketing, communication, merchandising, advertising, and broadcasting.  These six class discussions will take students behind the scenes of what goes into marketing the number-one sports event in the country.

Please note: This course has a different schedule than what appears in the print catalogue.

Andy Dolich, Managing Partner and Head of US Sports Practice, Odgers Berndtson.  Dolich has held executive positions in the National Football League, National Basketball Association, National Hockey League, and Major League Baseball over the past forty years.  Most recently, he was chief operating officer of the San Francisco 49ers.  Dolich’s sports business consulting clients have included Nike, the San Jose Sharks, the Seattle Mariners, and Stanford’s and UC Berkeley’s athletic departments.  He is the “Sports Business Insider” for CSN Bay Area and a contributing columnist for the SportsBusiness Journal.
