Update 10-8-13

Hi,

So far, we have 34 votes about the 50th reunion of the class of '65, and I'm pretty impressed.  That's a bit over 1/5 of the 150 former class members we have on the weekly mailing list and a bit over 10 percent of the original class.  The breakdown:

    April -- 14 votes

    October -- 9 votes

    Either -- 11 votes

We'll wait another week to see if more votes come in, but, meanwhile, there are some other thoughts to share.

People were really happy about setting the date now, well in advance, so thank you to the person who suggested it.  People definitely wanted the reunion in 2015.  Even though our senior year was '64 - '65, people felt we just shouldn't have the party in 2014.  It was somehow wrong.  Some people who favored April mentioned that Hurricane Sandy was in October.  Some people who favored October said that April is too wet.  A lot of people said definitely in New York.  They didn't want it any other place.  A couple of people asked about having it at South, and the problem there is no alcohol.  Absolutely none.  We'll get kicked out if even a flask is spotted.  And a good number of people said absolutely another 3-day weekend.

So something I've been thinking about is a kind of moveable feast.  We start Friday night with a alcohol-free kick-off at South from 6 PM to 9 PM.  Then we move to a restaurant for a pay-for-what-you-eat-and-drink dinner.  That should keep it affordable for everyone.  It can also be a series of restaurants, if the initial group decides to break up.  On Saturday, I've been thinking maybe lunch in New York City, kind of like what the class of '63 is doing at the Cornell Club, except that, once again, we'd all meet at a restaurant, and people would pay their own way to keep it affordable.  After the afternoon lunch, people could break up into groups, or stay together and play in the city.  The alternative is having the big get-together on Saturday night in the city, and that would give people Saturday morning and afternoon to meet with the folks they want to see.  Sunday, we'd meet for brunch, again at a restaurant or a couple of restaurants, probably on Long Island, depending on what people decide.  Again, people would pay for their own meals to keep it affordable and to try to attract the largest group of people.  And non-class members would be welcome at any of the gatherings

Some of these things worked very nicely for the 45th reunion, bypassing raising and collecting money and putting down a deposit for a catered dinner.  The other thing that worked -- for the 37th, 40th, and 45th reunions -- was choosing a hotel that some people could stay at.  But not everyone has to.  Obviously, a lot of people still live in the metropolitan area and will be coming from home.  And other people may stay with friends or may decide that the hotel that some people have chosen is too expensive or too inaccessible and find a place they consider to be better.

In any case, all of these are just thoughts.  Brainstorming.  We have plenty of time to decide on the details.  But we seem to be looking at the weekend of April 25, 2015 or the weekend of October 24, 2015.

In addition to votes, a series of congratulations came in for David Lobell and, indirectly, for Nancy, Rich, Ellen, Lynn, and Steve.

From Jean Cohen Oklan:  I would like to congratulate the Nudelman-Lobell family on an outstanding achievement!

From Robert Fiveson:  As for David Lobell -- amazing and terrific news.  Anyone who helps feed the people of this world is a true hero to me.  Kudos to the family.

From Linda Cohen Greenseid:  From arts to academics, our class achieved many things, and now our children are taking the honors.  Congratulations to the Nudelman-Lobells.

Finally, if you just can't wait till 2015 and have to see some former South folks this weekend, here's one last look at the repeating party information.  By this point, you're almost going to have to crash either party.
