Update 7-22-14

Hi,

First, some fan notes for that unknown Internet humorist from last week:

From Marc Jonas:  Thanks for the patriotic humor.  Funny stuff.  Greetings from Martha's Vineyard.

From Joanne Shapiro Polner and her husband, Alex:  The "bit of patriotic humor" piece had us both laughing. We are sharing it with friends.  Thanks.

From Ed Albrecht:  That rant on Old Farts Militia is terrific, and I agree 100%.  The way I see it, we have approximately 1 million-or-so of us Vets sitting around waiting to push up daisies.  Let's put them to work.  They are itching to do something constructive.  Nothing worst than a pissed-off 60-year-old with an AR15 looking for a latrine!  Hell, just the Vets of Valley Stream would be quite a large number!  Throw in menopausal women, and you have a winning combination.  They could shout the enemy to death!  Hooray for the Red, White, and Grey!

Next, shop notes.

From Peter Shapiro:  I believe the metal shop teacher was Donald Hicks.

And, again, from Ed Albrecht:  The metal shop teacher in junior and senior years at South was Joe Caruso, a big burly guy if anyone can't remember.  The wood shop teacher was Don Hicks.
I took metal shop in an earlier year but don't remember Mr. Kuskol.  I have mentioned before that once a year, Mr. Hicks and Mr. Caruso would take on their classes in a knock down, drag out battle.  I even remember Caruso one time picking up a wrench, but he didn't use it.  We drew blood, but it was a lot of fun. Erick Wohlgemuth would remember this.

[Rich -- Erick, as the euphemism goes, is unfortunately no longer with us.]

And from Andy Dolich:  The votes are in, and Rocco Mango has won "Coolest Name for a Falcon Facilitator."

In travel notes:  Emily Kleinman Schreiber and her friend Allen were in Los Angeles so Emily could pick up a slew of newsletter awards, and she, Allen, my partner Tom, and I had dinner together before we saw a pair of plays at the Music Center.  Emily and Allen saw the new musical We Will Rock You, and Tom and I saw the one-man play Buyer & Celler with a very funny Michael Urie.
Afterward, Emily wrote:  Our show was fantastic fun.  The cast and the audience were rockin'!!  It will be hard to fall asleep 'cause I'm so charged up.
Emily also sent a photo of the two of us on the Music Center plaza.  I'll forward the picture soon to Stu Borman for posting.

In craft notes, Zelda White Nichols sent the following, asking:  I wonder if anyone from South is attending this?  It must be so interesting to see.
Decorating with Knitting In Your Trees -- an Effort of the Community of Oyster Bay, New York.  Look for trees and light poles in Oyster Bay to show some color.  The crocheted and knit panels are designed and installed by artist Carol Hummel.
The Oyster Bay Chamber of Commerce has brought in Carol Hummel to brighten downtown streets.  Hummel's Fiber Art Installation kicks off the weekend’s Oyster Bay Arts Festival.  The goal is to infuse the streets of the historic downtown with culturally rich fiber art representing the community and its spirit.
"All people need to bring are their nimble fingers, an open mind, and a lawn chair," The Knitted Purl owner Patti McSkane said.  "Join us in creating, or just enjoy getting to know Carol, while watching her in action."
The installation begins at the intersection of South Street and Audrey Avenue and runs two blocks in each direction, including the landmark gazebo in front of Town Hall.  "The Hand-Stitched Hamlet will add to the draw of the Oyster Bay Arts Festival," President John Bonifacio said.  "It will continue to single out Oyster Bay as a unique destination for the arts."

In class of '64 reunion notes, Tom McPartland writes:  We now have at total of 47 people paid.  9 more checks came in this past week.  Joe Caruso will attend.  Helen David said she cannot, since she is living in Arizona.  We need a minimum of 60 people to pay for the room Friday night, so we need to have more deposits from anyone who plans to attend, as there are some time lines to meet with the hotel.  This should not be hard as the original feedback from our class said close to 80 people were interested in coming to the reunion.

Finally, this week's amusement: a forwarded Internet Science and Technology Knowledge Quiz, sponsored by the Pew Research Center and the Smithsonian.  13 questions, 2 minutes, and I may have linked this here before.  And I still got the same question wrong I did 3-or-4 years ago.
