Update 3-19-13

Hi,

First, the scholarship fundraising's all done for the year.  Again, thanks to everyone who contributed.  We're nine bucks over, and I'll put that away till next year.  We'll probably pick up about a nickel in interest.  As I wrote to a number of people when I confirmed that their checks had arrived:  Now, I just have to wait for Liz King Giordano to send the students' names from South, so I can mail her this year's scholarship checks.  I'm always relieved when the money is out of my account.

Speaking of students' names, something I mentioned I was going to add here several weeks ago but which got deferred because of other mail:  a thank you note from Eric Kleinertz, last year's recipient of the Vince Tampio scholarship, his credits at South, and Michael Gallagher's credits.  Michael was the recipient of last year's Booker Gibson scholarship.  I think Booker mentioned he'd gotten a thank you note from Michael, and I may have gotten one by e-mail last spring and accidentally deleted it, not recognizing the sender's name.

From Eric Kleinertz:  To those who sponsor the Vince Tampio Memorial Theater Award, I want to thank you so much for recognizing me and my musical contributions to South High School.  It has been my great pleasure to be involved in Marching Band, the Jazz Ensemble, and especially the Pit Orchestra.  I am continuing my education at NYU, where I plan on going into premed and also hope to continue being involved in all aspects of music.

[Rich -- If it seems Eric should have gotten the music and not the theater scholarship, the important thing to notice in that thank you note is Eric's involvement in the Pit Orchestra.  There's no reason for anyone to have memorized Linda Kettering's introduction of Eric at last year's awards assembly, but, again, here's what she said:  While the actors are no doubt an essential element of any musical, a production simply could not be without those individuals who work tirelessly behind the curtains.  This year, this award goes to a student who has put forth great effort to improve his own abilities as a musician and guitarist for the purpose of performing with the Pit Orchestra.]

Eric's other credits, from the graduation program:  Boston University Presidential Scholarship, SUNY Binghamton Scholarship, SUNY Stony Brook Scholarship, PTSA Scholarship Award, and the Television Production Club Leadership Award.  He was also a member of the National Honor Society, the National Second Language Honor Society, the National Math Honor Society, the New York State Science Honor Society, and the Tri-M National Music Honor Society.

Michael Gallagher's credits, also from the graduation program:  New York Institute of Technology Scholarship, Hofstra University Scholarship, Adelphi University Scholarship, St. John's University Scholarship, and the Long Island University C.W Post Scholarship.  He was also a member of the Tri-M National Music Honor Society.

In other notes:  Emily Kleinman Schreiber sent the Spring Alumni Association Bulletin, which has a photo of Eric Kleinertz and Linda Kettering and one of Michael Gallagher and Booker Gibson.  Emily also noted that Linda had presented the two scholarships on behalf of the Class of '65, but that really isn't true anymore, and maybe it never has been.  Members of the Class of '65 may have originated the scholarship idea, but a quarter of the annual supporters come from classes that range from '62 to '69.  In addition, former faculty members and people from other classes have donated to the scholarships over the years.

The Alumni Association Bulletin also included this link to the Class of '62's October 2012 50th reunion photos:  vssh1962reunion . weebly . com  (please take out those spaces).  Included in the drop-down menu under Photos are pictures of the class' earlier reunions, so you can watch people's hair darken, lighten, or vanish.  There are also photos of Clara Hoogenboom -- looking remarkably unchanged from my memory -- James Bergen -- looking thinner and older -- Bernie O'Brien -- as often, grinning -- and a fully-bearded Ed Schmidt.  Thanks you to the Class of '62 for providing all that and to Emily for passing the information along.  There are also pictures of members the still dark-haired Class of '82 happily celebrating their merely 30th reunion, but you'd have to get the Alumni Association Bulleting to see those.  Unfortunately, I don't know whether that class has a web page.

A request from Zelda White Nichols:  I am trying to find out if anyone has any experience with Costa Rica, either as a tourist or a property owner.  If so, please e-mail me at:  zelda . nichols@high-rock-lake . com  (without the spaces).  Thanks.

Ellen Epstein Silver wrote that, since she and her husband Alan are moving, their new e-mail address is:   asilvertx @ gmail . com  (again, take out the spaces).

Finally, a summary of an exchange of notes between former South science teacher Helen David and me.  I'd add those notes here, but Helen and I just corresponded, and I didn't have time to ask her permission to do that.  Here's about what we said:
Helen mentioned that her former home just off Rosedale Road in North Woodmere had flooded during Hurricane Sandy, and I mentioned that my mother's soon-to-be former home in Green Acres / Mill Brook amazingly hadn't.  Helen asked if I was at South when the creek flooded most of South's rear parking lot during an especially high tide.  I said I probably hadn't been because that would have flooded the path from the bridge, and I would have remembered having to walk the long way to school.  Helen also remembered three swans flying towards the second floor window of her science classroom while she was teaching.  All she could do was tell her class to "Look!"

Also, weirdly, when I was sorting my mother's books last month, I came across a collection of Dickens' novels.  I opened one I didn't recognize the title of and neatly written on the flyleaf was:  Property of Miss Irene Saunders.  Amazingly, that was the only one of maybe the dozen books in the series that had that inscription.  I checked.
