Update 3-5-13

Hi,

The scholarship totals after one week:  $325, divided between the Booker Gibson and the Vince Tampio awards.  Many people simply say, "Use the money where it's needed."
The early fundraising weeks are often the easiest.  Raising the last few hundred dollars is sometimes hard because by then, we're depending on people who haven't donated before.  But, so far, thanks, everyone.
Again, if you want to contribute, please send your checks to:  Rich Eisbrouch, 23030 Dolorosa Street, Woodland Hills, California 91367.  The checks should be made out to me, and please indicate in the bottom left corner of the check which scholarship you'd like to support, or if you'd prefer your donation to be split between the two.

Zelda White Nichols asked why I share the pet advice information that she often intends just for me.  It's because lots of people have pets and like advice.  For example, this week Zelda mentioned that if a pet swallows string or dental floss, feed the pet bread.  That coats the string and keeps it from tangling as it passes through the animal's system.  I didn't know that, but with our dogs, we tend to use cooked rice for the same purpose.

Someone else also mentioned that she was hesitant to write me at the class address because she was afraid the note would end up in the newsletter.  No, I kind of cheat with Zelda's advice and often don't check with her before I add it to the newsletter because I figure it's something I could find on the Internet.  But after messing up a several times because I couldn't tell if a note was meant for me or for the class, I now check before adding news to the newsletter.  The big exception is anything on Facebook is up for grabs.

Steve Zuckerman writes from Puerto Rico:  Hi, there.  You were absolutely right on that quick quiz I sent about members of the cast of New Faces of '52.  I believe the cast also highlighted the talents of Anthony Newley, newcomer Leslie Uggams, and Julie Newmar.  And didn't that cast include another newcomer named Harry Belafonte?  They all got their starts around that time in the early 50s.
Also, interesting what Barbara Blitfield Pech wrote about Robert Clary.  It seems this show introduced theater-goers to a lot of new talent.
Last bit of information on the matinee idol and swashbuckler action star Tyrone Power:  his father was also a well-known matinee idol but in the silent screen era.  Power, senior, Doug Fairbanks, senior, and Rudolph Valentino were big box office draws in the 1920s.  Ty Power, senior, also  died from a massive heart attack, just like his son did in the late 1950s.  Maybe I got it wrong, but I read that the title of the last film
Tyrone Power, junior, worked on was called David and Bathesheba, and the only film that Errol Flynn and Tyrone Power both appeared in together, close to the end of their careers, was Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises.  Flynn gave one of his better performances, and so did Power.  Ava Gardner was the love interest for both of them.
Finally, it's a great idea to submit the name of Booker Gibson, our favorite music teacher from South High, for consideration for the newly formed awards category at the Grammys that honors achievements in Music Education.  I believe the deadline for that is April 15th.
    Regards to all.

[Rich -- I'm not exactly sure what Steve's remembering here.  In 1952, Leslie Uggams was only 9, and though she was a child star, she didn't appear on Broadway until her mid-20s.  Anthony Newley was also a child star, having appeared as the Artful Dodger in David Lean's film of Oliver Twist in 1948.  But Newley didn't start co-writing songs until the late 1950s.  Julie Newmar was 17 in 1952, so she could have been on Broadway, but she wasn't until 1955, when she was a dancer in Silk Stockings.  Finally, Harry Belafonte had established himself as a singer in New York by 1949, and he was on Broadway in 1953, when he won both a Tony award and a Theatre World award.  But that was in a revue called John Murray Anderson's Almanac, not in New Faces of '52.
Also, Tyrone Power, junior's last movie was Solomon and Sheba, co-starring with Gina Lollobrigida.  David and Bathesheba was a movie which starred Gregory Peck and Susan Hayward.  But Ty Power, junior, and Errol Flynn did appear in The Sun Also Rises with Ava Gardner.
As usual, my source is the Internet.]

And last, there was an article in New York magazine a month ago -- January 28th -- which explained that one of the reasons we remember music from high school and soon afterwards so well is our brains are still developing between the ages of 15 and 25.  So information learned in that period gets embedded in our brain matter more firmly than any other information.  In which case, why can't I speak Spanish?
