Update 4-2-13
Hi,
First, some sad news. Barbara Blitfield Pech forwarded this entry from Nancy Duncan on Facebook: I just read sad news that Gloria Vincello, a former gym teacher at South, passed away on Sunday.
The Newsday obituary, from March 24th: VINCELLO - Gloria, on March 22, 2013, of Valley Stream. Beloved wife of the late Ralph. Devoted sister of the late Arthur DeMatteis. Loving daughter of the late Mary and Dominick DeMatteis. Gloria will be missed by many family members and friends and will be forever in our hearts.
Family will receive friends Monday, March 25, 2013, at the Moore Funeral Home, 54 West Jamaica Avenue, Valley Stream. Visitation from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM. Funeral Mass Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at 9:30 AM at Holy Name of Mary Roman Catholic Church, Valley Stream. Interment to follow at Saint Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale, New York.
Some happier news, also raided from Facebook:
Joan Aires Cleven celebrated a birthday.
Barbara Zingman Braunstein celebrated a birthday.
Valerie Nelson Gillen went to Broadway to see Tom Hanks in Nora Ephron's final play Lucky Guy.
Ed Albrecht went mammoth hunting in America's most recently approved national park,Tule Springs, in Nevada. He writes: "I went with a guide and about 30 people. I was invited by my daughter-in-law's father, Ron Anderson. When asked, I said, 'Sure, I'll probably see some guys I know.' Anyway we walked couple of miles, and thank god there was a guide. The guide explained what we were looking at because these weren't the kind of fossils I was used to. They were fragments of a mammoth tusk and a wrist bone from something. It was all very interesting, but I would have preferred to be indoors and on a golf cart. Still, a Good Time!"
Jerry Bittman wrote: "Even though I watched the first 4 episodes, I set my DVR to record all 5 episodes -- 10 hours -- of the History Network's new version of The Bible. Were you aware that excruciating means 'out of the cross.' "
And from Steve Cahn, class of '71: Planning a whitewater rafting trip for our Boy Scout Pack 267 Alumni Overnight. No ticks this year. Looking at June 22nd or June 29th. Please get back to me if you have a preference. And spread the word. No need to have been an Eagle Scout, only a member of Pack 267. Genghisaha @ aol . com (remove the spaces)
Finally, in the kind of reunions more frequently mentioned here, Amy Miller Cohen writes: The class of 1963 is working on a 50th reunion, but we are missing many classmates' e-mail addresses. We have a call out on Facebook and Classmates . com. Could you also put this notice in one of your upcoming newsletters?
Looking for class of 1963 members. If you have siblings or friends or cousins or spouses from the class of 1963 please contact: Amy Miller Cohen at: ymarellim @ aol . com (remove the spaces). We are hoping to find more e-mail addresses for our classmates in preparation for a 50th reunion.
[Rich -- I wrote Amy: This was in the newsletter last week, forwarded from a note written by Linda Bazerman on Facebook. But I'll add it again, with your contact information.]
Amy replied: Thanks. I have been the keeper of the current class list, so listing my e-mail address and name would be great.
[Rich -- And I wrote: I didn't know that. I'm kind of in the same position, but I have lots of help. How large was your class, and how many people have you located?]
Amy wrote: The class of 1963 had 238 members. I found close to 100 of them when I organized our 25th reunion back in 1988. Now, I have between 50 and 75 e-mail addresses, fluctuating almost daily, depending upon people changing their email addresses.
I found more people in 1988, using the Nassau County phone book. Many parents still lived at the same addresses. My difficulty in recent years has been the frustration of relying on e-mails for people who change their addresses without keeping in touch.
[Rich -- I wrote back: Yep, our class had nearly 300 people, and even after this past 10 years, with all the Internet connections, there are still 75 we've never found. Of the other 225, maybe 25 have died, and another 50 prefer not to stay in touch. So our list is really at 150, half the original class.
Also, while 110 former classmates came to our 37th reunion in 2002, and many of them can't stop saying how great that was, it's been hard to get everyone together again. A lot of people, from many different schools and classes, offer theories about this, But who ever knows what's right?]
