Update 12-18-12
Hi,
Another early update because I'll be away from my computer till almost next year. So Merry Christmas, Happy Kwanzaa, and I'll wish you all Happy New Year around the 31st. Meanwhile, some notes:
First, from Mary Sipp Green: Thought I'd add to the Brubeck memory bank. Years ago, Dave's assistant called my house to ask if he could use one of my paintings, "Nightshift," and the title for the cover of his next CD. He was wildly generous with the leasing fee offer, and I probably would have given him permission to reproduce the image for free. I never got to meet him but always liked the connection. Plus, the music on "Nightshift" is really good.
Best wishes to the class for a very happy holiday and a healthy new year.

Next, from Joanne Shapiro Polner: Thank you for including that beautiful story at the end of the always-welcomed update last week.
I will be happy to share that story with my grown children and ask them to take note if their day-to-day life includes such teachings so beautifully described. I think it does, in an ethical and good human relations sense. I will ask, are your children "understanding" the importance in life of such daily kindness, thoughtfulness, and living by certain really good rules? Have you put a name to the values?
I have always told our children, wherever you are, always leave a place better than you found it -- your own room, your house, and a public place or a space that you are using for work or play or personal service. I should have voiced, also, specifically, not just the place but the atmosphere for the person or people there. It starts in the family. Appreciate each other clearly and often.
How well do our grandchildren know that it is critical to a moral life to "do good" for others? They should know this: Think about how to treat your family, friends, neighbors, and public helpers -- storekeepers, gas station attendants, librarians, teachers, house cleaners, grass cutters. Speak to each as if, at any moment, particularly "this" moment of your interaction, that each person is the most important person in the world. Make it a habit to thank a person for his or her work in a most sincere manner. Glow over the work done and the person who did it.
Third, a useful piece of medical reference forwarded by Evelyn Roedel Read: Decoding Your Lab Report Lab reports are a routine but mysterious part of medical visits. Whether you are being diagnosed with diabetes for the first time or getting your A1C test for the hundredth time, you are likely going to need to undergo some kind of testing so that your doctor will know what’s going on and recommend the proper course of treatment, if necessary. But when you see your test results, will you know what it means?
